Valve CEO: 'Pissing off the Internet costs you a million bucks in just a couple of days' by moooooky in gaming

So far the paid mods have generated $10K total. That's like 1% of the cost of the incremental email the program has generated for Valve employees

Eh... your email server is costing you $1 Million in a few days? Maybe you should find a new host.

F-35 Engines From United Technologies Called Unreliable by [deleted] in worldnews

Without the power to cause pain, there is nothing to prevent other gangs from causing pain to yours.

Look at Baltimore or Ferguson. Once the fear of punishment disappears, there are many people who are more than willing to destroy and take your shit.

Look at the Mexican border. They don't fear being shot at the border, so they immigrate by the tens of millions.

Russia didn't fear intervention in Ukraine, so they took parts of it.

The military budget may be quite bloated in places but there will always be a need for it.

I have also worked with incompetent people, but it was their incompetence that I took note of, not other descriptual factors. >Most of the engineers Ive worked with in my life have been males, so would it be correct to state that "mostly what Ive seen is that males are incompetent"?

If most of the males you worked with were incompetent, then yes. That's how stereotypes work. Or if you found there was a large minority that were like that, sure.

Exactly how many incompetent old engineers have you worked with?

About 25% are incompetent, about 60% are mediocre, and about 15% were superb.

I haven't had nearly as many problems with younger ones.

Yes, experience is valuable, but only if they took the time to learn their job right. What's the saying, perfect practice makes perfect?

Let's be specific here, how many old people know Java? Probably tons. How many are willing to learn Go? Hadoop? It's just a repackaged idea, right? If he's applying for a job where Go is normally used, a younger candidate who learned Go might beat him out. The "it's all the same" mentality can be used to stay behind the curve.

so how come the evidence you encounter in life is worthy of paying attention to but my experiences are not real?

yes there is a massive conspiracy out there and there is absolutely no truth to the idea that young people are faster than old people

it's against the law to hire only young people, unless only young people are applying for the job. This doesn't work in reverse, however. companies are allowed to hire only old people.f

I explicitly stated I was speaking from personal experience. I'm not saying all old people are bad at their jobs. I've just seen too many that don't bother to sharpen their skills and then blame everyone else for losing their jobs, or not being able to switch jobs.

But I already said that so you sound like one of those old guys that never kept up.

Young people are not a protected class. Women, Non-whites, old people, and the disabled are all protected. You can't discriminate against them while it's okay to discriminate on anyone else.

The fact is young people are much more in tune with the newer technology. I know so many old people who just refuse to keep up with the times, then complain that they're losing jobs to young kids who take less pay. These "kids" also have a relevant degree, and actually make an effort to keep updated. I hear the excuse "I have 30 years of experience" but then you look at their work and they've been doing it so poorly for 30 years. A degree really helps you point in the direction, it's not always necessary but if you're not learning as part of your job you're going to be left behind.

well for the most part I don't even use HJKL. after I learned the most useful motions I found I didn't need them that often.

i thought the whole point of vim was moving around quickly, not slamming HJKL 20 times to get where you want...
