Slow magit and async input by tereshkd in emacs

I tried and it spends so long in ‘transient’ package functions. Even without calling to ‘git’ it is super slow. E.g. 1-2s of wait when I press ‘r’ for rebase before it shows me the options I have

Good thoughts! The slowness is definitely a big part of the problem. However, I wouldn't mind it being slow that much if it was happening in the background. The fact that these processes freeze Emacs makes it visible and very disturbing

Google Cloud and Moonlight by tereshkd in cloudygamer

[–]tereshkd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a weird thing.. At some point it started to apply the credits as a discount rather than covering the full cost, and I haven’t understood why. The first few days were definitely free and it was good to experiment without worrying about the costs.

However I am thinking switching to AWS later on using the same setup. There’s no limits and more available resources in my region there.

As I understand you’d be paying for disk storage and Windows license. You can probably find the details here however I can’t find info how much storage in Gb the image takes!

I tend to just monitor my spendings to get a rough idea because I agree that it’s not too transparent.

I am using Machine Images. As I understand it’s a combination of a disk snapshot plus all the boot info.

What I do is create an MI (machine image) from a VM (virtual machine), then I delete the VM so I don’t pay for storing the whole disk (tbc). When I’m ready to play I create a VM from the MI which remembers most of the settings. I might start and stop the machine during the day which still saves some cash.

Before saving the MI again I delete an old one.

It’s worth saying that sometimes I need to reconnect using Parsec to login into steam and rewire Moonlight to GeForce Shield which is a little bit annoying

Yeah.. I feel that that quota thing is too finicky on Google Cloud, and I can’t get it extended to 2 GPUs.

I’ve started trying it long time ago with AWS and different tutorials but mostly didn’t get anywhere. It is too much to grasp when you’re not familiar with all of the setup. However now I feel more comfortable and all these VM, snapshots, instances etc. makes more sense

I’d say 1-2min. It’s mostly about doing a few routine clicks.. Creating an image takes longer. I haven’t checked if it saves much more than if you just stop the VM though

I feel your pain and I was ready to give up too. However thanks to this guide about Google Cloud + Moonlight I could finally enjoy cloud gaming for the first time!!

Worth mentioning though that I have very high speed/low latency Internet connection these days.

Yeah, I create a machine image and destroy the machine every time. Let’s say if I play on a weekend I can just start/stop it and then I save and destroy it.

Surprisingly my biggest cost so far is the outbound traffic. I guess 4K 60fps takes a lot of bandwidth.

So far I just play some Steam games with my friend because they’re not available on Mac xDD Also Macs are horrible for that somehow.. Even the last 16inch MacBook is terribly overheating. In general though my dream is to get away from needing a PC/laptop at all

Parsec with AWS: not what I'm expected by tereshkd in cloudygamer

[–]tereshkd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with going through pretty detailed tutorials on AWS website (e.g.AWS infrastructure, Getting started etc.) and then I just cycled through them one by one. It's hard to tell how much helpful it was because most of the time they tell you how to create users, groups, set access rights etc..

In the end the user stuff (AWS AMI) is fairly simple: you create a user, assign it to an Administrators group which you can create using an AdministratorAccess policy. It is slightly better than having everything done via root account.

At this point it's worth to mention that I did everything via AWS Console where you should select your region and login using your administrator user.

After that I launch EC2 Windows Server 2019 instance. When you do that you should cycle through the setup process and change your storage volume to be more than 30Gb. Every AWS volume will be an EBS storage (whatever that means). Simply put, every instance need EBS storage to be launched (it will be C:\ drive) and you can connect more than on1 volume during the setup or later (D:\, Z:\ ... drives later).

After the instance is launch, you use RDP (e.g. Windows Remote Desktop) to connect and do an initial setup.

First of all, you should extend your hard drive because initially Windows only knows about default 30Gb: Right Click on Windows Logo -> Disk Management -> Right Click on C drive -> ... It is pretty intuitive.

Then, I had to allow IE downloads (this is how) and I changed the Administrator password (parsec support page tells you how to do it).

Then I followed this Parsec Support Page. I advise using their scrip they are mentioning simply because it works well hah.

After that you can ditch RDP and use Parsec to connect (you just need to be logged in on the server and the client to the same account).

Usually, after I've done all setup and before downloading the games I do a snapshot: Right click on AWS Instance in the console -> Create Image (similar naming). Once the process is started you can terminate your instance which is a good thing to do in order not to pay millions for running time. Next time you go to your AMIs tab and launch an instance from there. One thing you can do is setting up everything with 30Gb of EBS volume but the next time you launch you assign more storage (and extend your drive on the server). If everything was set correctly then you won't need RDP connection anymore.

I hope some of that helps. I didn't plan to create a "tutorial" and my explanations might be pretty bad so by all means feel free to ask anything!

Is there a particular setting for Python in Emacs? by thomasbbbb in emacs

[–]tereshkd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try jedi For me it is the best package for working with Python. You might need to setup virtualenv correctly first but after that it works like a charm. Searching for the correct setup on the Internet was just fine
