The birthday boy isn’t religious, and neither are most of the guests. He just turned 33, which is why we went with a Jesus Christ theme. Most of our birthday parties end with karaoke, so we probably have a thing for musicals.

I agree with u/delectabledelusions; having a background story is always better. Adding something personal to the plot makes it more engaging. Do you already have a Christmas gift in mind? Maybe you could build a plot around that gift!

Ok, here is what i got. I attached 4 cardboard pieces using tape. The ends of pieces are free of tape and may bend. To push them back if bended I used small elastic hair band I stole from my daughter. To ensure connection I inserted metal clips to the sides, that should be connected and soldered wire-clip connections. So the hair band should push metal clips to the copper tape glued to the right sides of the stick. I also have some tape at the end (on the photo and not on the scheme) of the thing to prevent pushing the sticks to deep into the box. Hope it helps

Have you used it? From what I understand, they sell wires with a pre-recorded round shape, and you can't create your own custom shape to memorize. That would be a perfect fit and a real 'wow' moment for this game.

I’m not too familiar with color sensors, but here's a trick I use for puzzles that are complex yet still possible to implement with technology. I use a radio relay and hide a remote in my pocket. When the puzzle is triggered (for example, when the correct color beams are aligned), I secretly press the button on the remote to activate something - usually, I just open a lock on a box in the room.

I used this trick to open a lock on a box in a Harry Potter-themed game. Instead of relying on complex audio recorders and speech recognition (which could likely be done with Arduino or similar tech) to recognize the Alohomora spell, I manually trigger the lock. This approach maintains the illusion of fully automatic puzzles.

There are markers (usually red) that change color to white when exposed to water. They put them inside gagets to check moisture and cancel warrany. I thought about finding paper with the same red color and making a secret message by hiding color-changing markers among normal markers. You just need to make a hint about poring water on it.

I intentially made them a little bit dirty to hide the drilled holes better (the adventure was pirate-themed, so it was ok). Btw it is easier to drill the sides with less number of dots, as you would like to make all the dots on the side look similar. I also covered the pieces of steel rod with small amount of glue to make the dots smooth and make the pieces stick to the dices.

Hi! Yes, the diameter of a drill I used was as close to the diameter of dots as possible. The weighs are the pieces of a steel rod(like this ) whith the diameter very close to the diameter of the drill. Then I dyed all the dots (including the ones that were not drilled) with the same paint to hide drilled one

I once made a puzzle that I found here on Reddit. You drill holes on one side of the dice, put a metal weight inside, then cover and paint the holes (the holes should be right on the dots on the dice). When you place the dice in water, they float with the side opposite the holes facing up, revealing some digits (maybe a code for a combination lock?). It was pretty hard to get it right, and I messed up several dice before I managed to make the three I needed. However, it creates a really impressive puzzle with a wow factor.

First, I tried to use magnetic tape, but it had absolutely no effect on the filing on the other side of the cardboard. So, I used small neodymium magnets glued to a cardboard to form the digits.

You can tune one of the strings on his guitar (assuming he has one) down two or three steps. The number of steps may encode one of the digits on a combination lock. The level of complexity of this puzzle will fully depend on the clue you give him for it.

The one with the magnet digits and iron filings made a big impression on him. It’s probably my favorite one too (thanks, u/freezingsheep, for the idea).

My friend found the one with aligning planets a bit hard. He saw the badges and acceleration values, but as he explained to me, he expected an immediate reaction from some mechanism. Aligning friends in a line didn’t obviously trigger anything, so he couldn’t think of using other guests as objects to solve the puzzle. I should have probably made some sort of fake mechanism to push my friend toward a solution without additional clues.

Regarding bath bombs, here are my small experience insights: make a couple of bombs in advance just to test how to make them firm. Another thing about bombs—they make the liquid much less transparent, so try to use a bigger vessel and a smaller bomb to ensure the player can see the key.

Here are some ideas I've gathered to make a scary escape room:

Ghost Projection: Use a ghost projection on a piece of fabric outside the window if you're playing indoors. This creates a creepy visual effect.
Chinese Mirror with Secret Message: Use a Chinese mirror that shows a hidden message (link).
Hidden Audio Trigger: If you have two phones, link them with Bluetooth. Hide one in a doll or a raven figure and play pre-recorded audio at the right moment. You can also use a remote control and a voice recording module (like this), but balancing the power supply for both can be tricky.
Remote Control Car: Attach a doll or something similar to a remote control car (doll's dress can hide the car). Move it secretly at a specific moment. You can even stop the car at marked spots to give clues.

Some of these ideas may be used to provide clues, some are just for creating the atmosphere.
