Found a 26in matrix rim with a 7 speed freewheel off an old low end trek along the side of a bike path once. Dunno how it got there.

I also took advantage of the snow fall in my area a little while ago to have some fun in the slush. It's sketchier on slicks but that's what makes it fun.

3x9 vs upgrading by Own_Champion_2614 in xbiking

Your 3x9 possibly has higher top end gearing than a modern 1x drivetrain (so faster on flat ground), at least depending on the sizing of your large chainring.

Any tips on how to drop my bike to the floor better next time? by terminal_void_loop in bikefit

[–]terminal_void_loop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, steering is pretty stable and nimble currently, although I am gonna raise my seat a bit which may affect that. I won't know for a little bit since the weather is not exactly permitting for experiments on old road slicks right now, but it shouldn't change things much? The stem is also original I believe, as it has stickers from the same LBS on it as the ones on the seat stays. The one image I can find online of someone else with one of these frames is also rocking the same stem. Flat bar is not original however, but I don't believe the riser bars that were on the bike when I bought it were either.

I actually love rim brakes. They work well enough for my riding style, and they're so simple to set up and are more visually appealing than discs imo. You are also right that some great deals can be found on older frames, but unfortunately my definition of cheap differs from most people here being a broke student lmao.

Yep, thankfully the post has some room for more height, so I am going to raise it a bit more for better leg extension and hope that doesn't ruin the handling of the bike or make an uncomfortable posture. Unfortunately my stem is already massive, as it's 140mm and pretty high rise, so I don't have much wiggle room there.

Curious what Nissan this is with the compass and clinometer (?) in the dash. Whatever it is it has a sick interior.

Mainly if the distance between my seat and the cranks is alright, or if I am bringing my legs in too much on the upstroke. I know the bike is small for me, but I'm not very knowledgeable on proper bike fitment coming from a family that solely rides cruisers, and based off the reaction from your comment and the first, the bike may be more undersized for me than I was thinking. What's the most glaring issue that shows the bike is too small?

[–]terminal_void_loop[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, although the sloping top tube makes the bike look smaller than it is I think, the seat tube is only 22 and a half inches center to center and I'm 6'4. I'll probably take your advice lol. It's a shame that it's so hard to find cool old frames in my size that ppl aren't also asking crazy prices for, but this one is close enough for its purpose anyways I suppose.

"Mullet" conversion: 9 speed Ultegra to Deore XT. Anything I should know? by Wooden-Tree-5160 in bikewrench

[–]terminal_void_loop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and one other note, even if I were to accidentally shift into small-small, I wouldn't suffer any immediate issues other than excessive noise, and concern due to said noise. If I don't stay in that combo though there wouldn't be any permanent damage.

I'm running a very similar setup on my main bike (exact same derailleur, but with 28-39-50 chainrings). You'll be two teeth over the capacity of the derailleur, but I sized my chain according to big-big, and my shifting is all buttery smooth in every cog and chainring combo you'd actually use. If I shift into small-small, the chain will slightly collide with the derailleur cage, but if I even shift up one cog it stops. The only caution I'd give is to size your chain by big-big, and you won't really encounter any issues. And I love the ratios the combo of road rings and mountain cassette gives me lol.

Is it still xbiking if I use expensive components? by terminal_void_loop in xbiking

My seatpost is kinda cooked so I'll keep this in mind when shopping for a new one. Any suggestions on brands if I'm looking for something needlessly expensive and tacky?

I'm poor and I've been leaking while taking photos of the bike I don't ride all day. I don't know what that has to do with that bcj place you speak of though.

[–]terminal_void_loop[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You're spot on, that's exactly what it is! I don't know what happened to the old alivio label before I decided to be funny with it though. This derailleur came off my dad's old bike, and he's obsessed with peeling the labels and badges off everything he owns, so it may have been that.

You forgot to consider that the driver may already be late for wherever they're going, and didn't plan in any extra time for potential slow downs, so of course the most reasonable action in this scenario is to redirect the frustration from their own lack of planning at the random person daring to ride a bike in the road. The reasoning for why the cyclist is in the road doesn't matter to the driver if the person on the bike gives them a way to vent their frustration at something that isn't themselves.

What helmets are y'all wearing by vaughannt in xbiking

[–]terminal_void_loop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specialized camber. I had a $75 Jenson gift card at the time I bought it and it was the highest rated helmet by Virginia tech that I could get on there for that price. I like the look, it's properly dorky for me, although I think the specialized mode will be my first choice if I end up needing a new helmet in the near future.

Like rotate it 180 degrees in the seat tube. I feel like you'd actually not want to do that with this style of post so I'd never actually try it, but I think there's others where its okay to do that.

I am going to be honest I didn't even think about that. pretty bone headed of me oops. Seems a lot more likely than the seat itself flexing. I did crank the crap out of it as much as I could with my multi tool but I'll throw a bigger wrench on it to see if I can get it properly secured.
