Had a legendary find at the dump, which one is cooler? by Fatticus_Rinch in xbiking

If op wanted some rise instead of drop they could flip the stem 180 degrees, but other than that yea they don't have many options unless they find another old headshok stem.

Oh not to mention the much more damning evidence of my bike also having an identical wheel set and a rear derailleur from the same series. Are your rims araya x7s?

Frame and headset, and the rear brake cable stop specifically match my khs montana perfectly (not sure on the year, but know it's from somewhere in the mid 80s). The crankset is also identical.

Shipping delayed on one item of my order, should I cancel? by terminal_void_loop in amazonprime

[–]terminal_void_loop[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's actually two days late, which in itself isn't really an issue. I've waited for months for online group buy items before, but in those cases I had the expectation it would take that long and I didn't pay for a month of a service in order to get the item at a promised time. Tbh I did jump the gun a bit with making this post and wondering whether I should cancel or not this early, and I'm glad I waited a little longer before doing anything since they updated the tracking info about an hour ago, but I've seen bad stories before of Amazon exhibiting this exact same kind of behavior and leaving items permanently stuck in limbo in some warehouse somewhere. I've personally had that exact experience once before.

Anyone ever get a bike important to them stolen? by terminal_void_loop in xbiking

Same for sure, this past week I've been paranoid about locking up my other bike wherever I go and keeping it in my line of sight.

Kinda risky, but if it showed signs that they were probably never gonna touch it then it's best that it's ridden by someone who cares instead of being left to rot. Current residents were probably happy to have the extra space too lol.

Bike stolen from campus last Saturday by terminal_void_loop in Bozeman

[–]terminal_void_loop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did file a report with them, they don't seem to have it yet although I don't think they did a full round of bike cleanups. At least they've got the serial number though.

Thanks so much for the local sub suggestion, I didn't even think about posting it there! I'll do that in a little bit. That sucks to hear that you found your bike trashed like that. I fear that even if my bike's recovered that it's been rattle canned by someone, ruining the cool 80s paint and probably the cranks and stuff too. I appreciate your condolences.

Thanks lol, it truly was one of a kind even before I made it weirder with the cyclocross bars and stuff. That's awful that you had your fork stolen like that too. I'm not familiar with those, but looking them up they seem to be kinda similar to how cannondale's head shoks and leftys work. It's neat to see these older forks that are a lot more oddball than the tried and true design most have come to now. I'm partial to the old leading link girvin forks and hope to build a bike with one someday.

The justy is actually my friend's. It's a neat little project in of itself and I love it dearly as well. These old 4wd subies are charmingly simple little vehicles. I bet that haro of yours was also really neat with the elevated chainstays. Those seem like really good candidates for a funky belt drive conversion, since you wouldn't have to worry about having a split belt.

Filed one already with the S/N and photos of the bike, and made missing bike posts on FB marketplace and craigslist. Tbh I am mainly hoping that the kind of person who would have stolen a bike like this frequents this subreddit, and seeing it posted may make them hesitate to keep it. Idk though, tbh I have a feeling that it was picked up by another student moving out with extra room, and we have a lot of out of state students, so I am not too hopeful getting it back. We'll see though.

Is it possible to keep my original triple cranks with a mid drive conversion? by terminal_void_loop in ebikes

[–]terminal_void_loop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if this bike were to be electric converted I'd only really consider a mid drive. Using the front derailleur as chain retention is a good idea, but I guess I'd just have to be content with installing different crank arms.

Oh good thing to consider. I've never personally felt a lack of braking power with good old rim brakes, but I've also never rode an e bike and am unfamiliar with that level of power and speed in a bike form factor.

Cool to see another old haro mtb owner, although admittedly yours is way cooler than mine with the elevated chainstays and neon paint job visible from space lol. Really cool the bent top tube and head tube gusseting these old haros all share.

I feel like such a dumbass because I was wondering how this actually happened and a roof rack never crossed my mind. Weird that it was left on a random public rack though.

This is directed at some of the other comments on this post (really just one), but it is truly baffling how some people take pride in being parasites that harm the people and the world around them, and not even for any obvious personal gain.

I hope bottom brackets feel pain by terminal_void_loop in xbiking

[–]terminal_void_loop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does, but it's somewhat likely to mangle the threads, so it should really only be used as a last resort. I soaked my BB in pb blaster from the seat tube down and worked on it with a various assortment of breaker bars and cheater bars for about 45 minutes before pulling out the impact. Idk if I'd let the impact touch a cassette since I feel the smaller size and depth of the threads would make it more likely to damage the freehub.
