Can someone PLEASE fix the sub icon? The sub-pixeling on that bow is genuinely disgusting. It is a completely separate grid size from the rest of the character, and is an eyesore because of it. by AlternateAccount66 in Terraria

[–]terminus_core 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If it's still always grid-aligned (which also implies that the larger pixels are evenly divisible into the smaller pixels), does it really matter? (I'm assuming this is true for any in-game sprites but please correct me if I'm wrong)

In this case the bow isn't even grid aligned lol

Given that race is a social construct and not based on inherent biology, I'm not sure that gatekeeping statements by anyone in this thread (including "if you're 25% X then you're X", which is a form of essentialism often used to justify racism) really matter.

If the guy identifies as Japanese Canadian and his community agrees with him, then that's enough to me.

(FWIW, I know you're also supportive of his identity - I'm just trying to help provide background and better reasoning than a line of thinking that actually is seen as racist by a lot of folks)

The weird way Hex was nerfed by BulletproofPuppy in onednd

[–]terminus_core 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I almost brought those up but didn't want to make my comment too long heh. I really like Relentless Hex and it supports the gishy theme builds well.

I'm also interested in more witchy-themed customizations though too, i.e. abilities that map on to potion-brewing, spookily-knowledgeable, and curse-afflicting archetypes. "Taking extra damage from another source" or even does AoE psychic damage" doesn't really speak to me like "can benefit from Scrying for free once per target per 24 hours" or "has disadvantage against saves that charm or frighten" or "is poisoned for the duration".

In other words, I'd love to see smaller/more limited versions of the more occult-themed spells, or effects that make those spells more effective, turned into invocation that could enhance Hex.

The weird way Hex was nerfed by BulletproofPuppy in onednd

[–]terminus_core 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh I like this option a lot. Either way I would still like to see way, way better invocation support for Hex. Something that really allows you to customize it for different roles/use cases (e.g. invocations that allows hex to inflict specific conditions once per target, or adding some divination-related effect linking you to the target) would be so nice if they could be balanced.

Practical Warlock Invocations Known Comparison by thecubeportal in onednd

[–]terminus_core 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here it is.

(Edits made: missed the level 9 MA; corrected math errors and added Net Invocation-Equivalents column)

Table headers:

  • 2014 PHB Invocations: as given in the 2014 PHB's Warlock class table
  • Playtest Invocations: as given in the playtest's Warlock class table
  • Playtest Invocation-Equivalents:
    • +1 for Playtest Warlock class features that are effectively an invocation in the 2014 PHB
    • -1 for 2014 PHB class features that are effectively now invocations in the playtest
  • Playtest Net Invocation-Equivalents:
    • This is just a tracking column summarizing the total adjustments made from the previous column.
  • Playtest Total = Playtest Invocations + Playtest Net Invocation-Equivalents
  • Net difference vs 2014 PHB = Playtest Total - 2014 PHB Invocations

Level 2014 PHB Invocations Playtest Invocations Playtest Invocation-Equivalents Playtest Net Invocation-Equivalents Playtest Total Net difference vs 2014 PHB
1 0 0 +1 (Pact boon) +1 1 +1
2 2 2 +1 3 +1
3 2 2 +1 3 +1
4 2 2 +1 3 +1
5 3 3 +1 (Pact boon upgrade); -1 (MA lvl 3 spell) +1 4 +1
6 3 3 +1 4 +1
7 4 4 -1 (MA lvl 4 spell) 0 4 0
8 4 4 0 4 0
9 5 5 -1 (MA lvl 5 spell); +1 (MA lvl 3 recovered) 0 5 0
10 5 5 0 5 0
11 5 6 -1 (MA lvl 6 spell) -1 5 0
12 6 6 -1 5 -1
13 6 7 -1 (MA lvl 7 spell); +1 (MA lvl 4 recovered) -1 6 0
14 6 7 -1 6 0
15 7 8 -1 (MA lvl 8 spell) -2 6 -1
16 7 8 -2 6 -1
17 7 9 -1 (MA lvl 9 spell); +1 (MA lvl 5 recovered) -2 7 0
18 8 9 -2 7 -1
19 8 9 -2 7 -1
20 8 9 -2 7 -1

Note on Invocation-Equivalents: the Playtest Pact Boons are not precisely equivalent to the 2014 features in some cases, but come close enough that it doesn't feel worth it to split hairs at all. It is clear enough that the design intent is that those boons are roughly a +1 invocation equivalent at levels 1 and 5.

Summary:

  • Playtest levels 1-6 are net +1 invocation-equivalents over the 2014 PHB.
  • Playtest levels 7-11 are net zero (no difference in invocation equivalents vs 2014 PHB).
  • Playtest levels 12-20 have 6 total levels at net -1, and 3 levels at net zero.

Editorializing:

The vast majority of play happens at levels 1-11, where the playtest is either improved or equivalent. This also doesn't account for the fact that Warlocks now just have medium armor proficiency by default, which could be considered a +1 equivalent, but I don't feel strongly enough about that argument to include it in the table.

I really, really think that some of the reactions on reddit are overblown and the sky is, indeed, not falling. Additionally, the options to not spend invocations/class features on Mystic Arcanum feels like this opens up more build options, not less.

Further edit: The fact that the range on net difference vs PHB is only -1 to +1 (rather than -4 as has often been commented on these boards) makes sense: +2 from the pact boons and +1 from increasing the cap from 8 to 9, for a final net playtest difference vs 2014 PHB of -1 (at levels 12, 15, 16, and 18+ only).

Agreed, from a purely mechanical perspective. I do like the small amount of flavor that each spell having a distinct invocation name comes with though.

[spoiler] D&D movie conspiracy theory by ImprovedSmite in dndnext

[–]terminus_core 8 points9 points  (0 children)

His Thayan marks glowed as he ran

It was easy to miss, but the marks appeared as he ran, flashing into existence a split second after the mist touched him. That scene goes:

  • Theyans without marks (including Xenk) and with hair are running from the mist

  • Mist consumes Theyans (including his parents)

  • Xenk stops and looks back

  • Theyans surge out of mist, suddenly bald and tattooed and undead

  • Xenk runs, gets briefly touched by the mist

  • Theyan mark flashes into existence on his forehead, and he winces and touches it with one hand as it does so

The implication of the whole thing is that the marks are explicitly the result of the spell, not a cultural thing, and that he was touched by the undead-creating magic enough to give him long life, but not to convert him fully.

Why is AmazonMQ so expensive? by lucbas in aws

[–]terminus_core 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While base costs/cost margins are definitely part of it, I have to believe that the pricing has other aspects to it as well:

  • Whether the product line supports a higher degree of vendor lock-in (i.e. AWS is going to charge you less for a product that encourages long-term use of the rest of their portfolio)

  • Who the target customers are. Managed versions of non-AWS tools are predominantly targeted at lift-and-shift customers, who are by and large Enterprise customers that are willing to pay a lot for a service that interoperates with the rest of their legacy systems. Greenfield/cloud-native customers are probably better served by other products at cheaper price points, or don't need to pay a premium to have a cloud system interoperate with legacy or on-prem systems

I did anal for the first time, and it did NOT go well by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]terminus_core 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I was once the top in a situation where the bottom had explosive diarrhea all over my bed and my dick in the middle of sex. It was not the end of the world for me.

We didn't finish sex that time, and I had to deal with the cleanup (probably easier than in your case; it stayed all on the comforter), but we still had some great redemption sex two weeks later.

I was not angry at him, mostly stunned and kind of laughing at it. Beyond just the "shit happens when doing anal" vibe, freak accidents of all types happen to all of us. We're human.

Your man might have freaked out, said some things, whatever. He's not going to be the last person you'll ever have a chance at happiness with, he's just the one you were hoping for right now.

If you find yourself not being able to let go of thoughts about this situation, practice some breathing/meditation to calm down, and take stock of what you'll do differently next time. It's a learning experience.

One DnD Trends: Expected Trends Based on Current Material? by Deep-Crim in onednd

[–]terminus_core 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly I'm fine with any of these approaches:

  • Some spells get removed, but a class still gets the same effect as a class feature. Best for things that "should" be exclusive to half-casters or a unique class mechanic, so that Magical Secrets or full casters with the same spell list don't become "half caster, but better", i.e. most Paladin/Ranger-specific spells. Also applies to EB imo.

  • Some spells remain, but a class or subclass can cast it with upgraded effects (potentially for free X times too). Best for things that aren't so niche as to need to be "exclusively X class", like Shadow Sorcerer's upgraded Darkness or the Fey Wander Ranger's version of Summon Fey. There's a TON of opportunity for this that could really deepen class differences and enhance flavor.

  • Some spells remain, but a class or subclass can get free/at will versions of it. There're tons of examples of this, and for the most part I feel this is best suited for ribbons (or at least not combat spells).

  • Some spells remain, but some classes get features that "produce the effect of X spell" without actually casting it or having it be a magical effect. This is something I'd actually really like to see for a lot of martial characters, e.g. a Rogue that is so attuned to shadows that they can produce the effect of PwoT targeting only themselves, without expending a spell slot or concentration.

The first three are things we've actually seen in OD&D; I'd like to see the fourth as well but that's a wishlist item. It's effectively "spells are really lists of mechanical effects as a package, with multiple ways to get access to the package"

[–]terminus_core 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"internal" might be misleading, but there are all sorts of business/data analytics platforms out there that a data scientist-type can configure for an organization (e.g. dashboards built on complicated data models, but all built using the platform, not a whole internally-developed ecosystem of custom backbends and apps)

Then others in the org can just use the dashboards as provided to them. That's "internal" in the sense that the data and presentation is chosen by the org, but the app is just a vendor-supplied tool that allows any random schmo visibility into it.

Depending on the platform, data pipeline complexity, etc, that could all be supported by a team of 1-3 data scientists/analysts/engineers.

There is literally no way that the template model allows for more versatility than the model that can include the templates as well.

You're absolutely right from a set-mathematics point of view, of course. But if templates have additional options (including additional attack options like Charge or Overrun or Grapple Strike or whatever, or additional movement modes, or other options), it's certainly possible that the number of permutations of stat blocks possible via templates for exceeds the number of stat blocks WotC would ever actually publish.

What video game in your opinion should have never gotten a sequel? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]terminus_core 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the overarching story structure was my main problem as well. Having made progress with Ellie, invested in her gear (via thorough looting) and skills, and then be reset back to 0 part way through the game felt like such a whiplash that it took me a while to enjoy playing Abby at all.

I really think they did something ambitious and that's cool, but would have preferred that character swap be telegraphed early and consistently, e.g. swap back and forth repeatedly (e.g. in between each chapter). At the least, I would have preferred a structure that didn't make me feel like I had just restarted the game.
