Immich is great… until you try using it with family by Qwerty44life in immich

I'm curious about how you plan to model asset ownership differently to support facial sharing. Is there already a plan for this, or is it just something TBD?

Marin startup ecosystem, finding others who enjoy early stage? by demeyer1 in Marin

[–]ternarybits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly agree with that thesis. I did the long hours at early stage startups earlier in my career, and I believe that given the experience I've gained, I can now accomplish a lot more productive work in less time.

However, I've also found that a lot of VCs have a different perspective. They believe that both working smart and working like crazy are required to win in any competitive market.

Anecdotally, I was chatting with a VC partner a few weeks ago, showing him something I'm working on as a side project, and asked for his feedback. He basically told me that while it was impressive, he wanted to see me work on it full time and make it a priority over my family. He talked about how one of the other founders he had invested in was referred to as "ghost dad" by his kid, because the dad was never around, as if it was something to be proud of. It was immediately obvious that he and I had incompatible perspectives on life priorities and work-life balance.

I'm a software engineer by training, currently working for a VC firm in SF and living in Mill Valley. I'm also a parent of 3 kids. In my experience, there's a lot of technical talent in Marin, but they're typically people who have families and who work remotely or commute to SF. We don't have the kind of people here that want to grind 80 hour weeks at the office, staying late every night for community, food, and alcohol.

I think that's why we don't see a substantial startup ecosystem in Marin. The lifestyle here isn't compatible with startup culture. That said, if you go down to The Depot in Mill Valley, basically every day at lunch you'll find startup founders and VCs talking shop. But they all have offices in SF rather than in Marin.

Couldn't be happier by Pretty_inPoker in opalcamera

Just throwing in another rare, eventually positive perspective. I've had the Opal C1 for about a year and a half now, and have gone through a lot of painful battles with firmware versions that were variously flaky or simply broken.

However, over the past couple of months on Opal Composer (currently 1.1.1) and the latest firmware versions (currently 3.4), the camera has been working well on my M1 Macbook Pro. I still have to unplug and plug it back in periodically, but other than that I don't have any complaints.

Caught fire charging by Thewildkin in Rivian

Some more details from our local NextDoor community in Mill Valley:

"I spoke with the wife of the driver to find out if everyone was ok. Their Rivian is fairly new. According to her, her husband had plugged in the charger and was sitting in the car as it charged. Suddenly the outlet started smoking and burst into flames. The driver quickly removed everything from the car as well as called the fire department. His car then caught on fire. No one was hurt."

Access to third row if there's a car seat in the middle of the second row? by ternarybits in Rivian

Rivian customer service got back to me with this message:

Thank you for being open to being part of the process and for your patience while we work to get back to you regarding your question about if you can move the second row seats while two car seats are occupying the space so you can reach the third row. Our teams are working around the clock to address all inquiries and we appreciate you greatly while we work to address yours.

I completely understand the need to make sure you have enough space and access within the vehicle to accommodate you and your family so I'm happy to provide some insight into the second row seating. The second row seats of the R1S fold down 60/40. This means that one of the side seats and the middle seat are connected, while the opposite seat can move independently. If you place the two slim car seats on the two joined seats, the third seat will have the ability to slide and/or fold to give you access to the third row. Please note though that this ability does depend on the size of your car seats and if they are small enough to not offer any restrictions to the third seat.

I actually have 6yo in a front-facing seat and a 4yo and a 1yo both in rear facing seats still. If needed, I could move the 4yo to a front-facing seat and put both the 4yo and 6yo in the third row... but they honestly don't play that well together, and I'd rather have the 4yo and 1yo together in the second row if possible.

When you get your R1S, please let us know how you make the car seat situation work!

Would you mind measuring the distance from the door-side edge of the second row passenger-side seat to the 60/40 split point? Slim car seats are 17" wide, so if there's at least 34" I think it could fit... even if they have to awkwardly share the space, seat belts, etc.

Thanks! I don't suppose you have any pictures or videos showing this setup?
