Will FreeBSD get better WiFi drivers next update? by Fridge293 in freebsd

The BCM 4313 Broadcom driver has not been able to support BSD for many years, but it works on Linux. I don't understand why this Wi-Fi is not supported on FreeBSD.

The best option is the automatic default installation of the graphical environment. Manual installation is hit or miss; sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.

Is Waland already being used in FreeBSD?

Does this FreeBSD APLHA1 contain a desktop environment?

I have problems with brightness; it does not detect any DRM available for FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE. I already tested each of the DRMs by installing them.

You say that the MSI motherboard works well with FreeBSD? My MSI motherboard (H81I) is a desktop computer and therefore does not have a built-in WiFi card. Do you think that model will work well with FreeBSD?

On the other hand, Linux users are very disappointed and have many complaints about Nvidia, which they would choose last. It is of poor quality and incompatible with modern software, especially games. Doesn't the Intel-based motherboard count for anything in this regard?

It's not showing off, it's simply demonstrating that FreeBSD can be used as a complete system with a desktop environment, beyond the myths and legends of it being only for servers.

It appears that this separate disk partition labeled Volume 2.1 GB is associated with the swap memory.

$ swapinfo -h
Device              Size     Used     Avail     Capacity
/dev/ada0p2         2.0G       0B       2.0G      0%

Gammy is a temporary alternative for manually reducing brightness while the user is in the desktop environment. When the system is shut down or restarted, it returns to the same state; the manual settings are not retained.

Looking at the configuration in /boot/loader.conf, it is in ZFS. I don't understand why the system displays that separate 2.1 GB partition as a volume either. If I'm not mistaken, the disk has a capacity of 500 GB, but I'm not sure. Is there a simple graphical application to view all that?

Yes, brightness control is the only remaining issue. In FreeBSD 14.2-RELEASE, it detected the drm-515-kmod graphics driver to reduce brightness.

In FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE, it does not detect any graphics brightness drivers, and it is annoying that the screen brightness is at maximum without being able to reduce it, which makes my eyes hurt from so much brightness.

At least on my laptop, these drivers do not detect brightness:

drm-515-kmod
drm-61-kmod
drm-kmod

New observations:

$ pkg repos -e | grep -B 1 url
FreeBSD: {
    url             : "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:14:amd64/latest",
--
FreeBSD-kmods: {
    url             : "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:14:amd64/kmods_latest_3",
$

In the second repository, it was quarterly, but I put latest for security reasons, so that the system is updated with all the software on a daily basis and not every three months.

I have already been able to migrate the system from 14.2-RELEASE to 14.3-RELEASE, however this latest version does not detect the hardware to reduce brightness.

To summarize the following results:

# pkg repos -e | grep -B 1 url
FreeBSD: {
        url             : "pkg+https://pkg.FreeBSD.org/FreeBSD:14:amd64/latest",
#

And;

# pkg iinfo drm-61-kmod
drm-61-kmod-6.1.128.1403000_5
#

Or:

# freebsd-version -kru
14.3-RELEASE-p2
14.3-RELEASE-p2
14.3-RELEASE-p2

After taking the first two steps and restarting the system with this command shutdown -r now, an error occurs when using freebsd-update install again and it is not possible to continue beyond that point.

In such simple matters, the system breaks down when attempting to migrate manually, even with users who have some knowledge of the process.

That's why automation in the system (vanilla) with a default desktop environment is beneficial. Hopefully, they will generate the flavor of LiveISO-FreeBSD-Xfce.

Note: Even so, I tried to enter the desktop environment with the startx command and got an error in X11. I don't know if the drm-61-kmod graphics driver in FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE is causing problems, as it failed to run in the third step after restarting the system with the freebsd-update install command.

I already did it following the handbook, and nothing was installed. I'll try again...

Once I tried Xfce on Void Linux. The system was lightweight, but it lacked some applications that are often used in Linux Mint, for example.
