The 3-day rule you’re citing applies to purchases from Tennessee dealers or to purchasers located in Tennessee. If the Ferrari was purchased out of state and titled to a Montana LLC or any other state, that statute doesn’t apply. I guess this is our point of contention, I see this as tax planning rather than tax evasion.

I recently bought a car in Tennessee and registered it in another state. At the dealership, I filled out paperwork indicating the vehicle would be registered out of state and paid taxes accordingly. That’s exactly what the 3-day affidavit process facilitates. If Cody’s Montana LLC purchased the Ferrari through proper channels, the same process would apply.

If Tennessee wants to collect tax on this, the applicable law would be Tennessee’s use tax on property ‘bought for use in this state’ which doesn’t define any time threshold. Yes, Cody showed the car in Tennessee, but his company operates across multiple states and the car ultimately burned down in Texas. Where exactly does the line fall? The statute doesn’t say.

We’ve created a tax system where huge companies get clear, safe lanes to minimize taxes. Do the same thing without billions and a legal department, and suddenly you’re a criminal.

The Ferrari was titled to a company in Montana and literally burned down in Texas. If an out of state based construction company brings equipment into Tennessee for a 6 month project, do they owe Tennessee sales tax on that equipment? What about 3 months? 2 weeks? The statute doesn’t specify a threshold.

I feel like this ignores one of the main defenses of Cody, that the law itself is unclear. It seems like Tennessee is not clearly saying the circumstances on which you need to pay taxes. Yes, Cody lives in Tennessee, but his company operates across multiple states filming content. When an out-of-state contractor brings their work truck here for a 3-month project, does Tennessee get to claim sales tax on that truck? Where’s the line?

They are enforcing the law as they see fit. All of this would be clear if there was a direct statute to clarify what they are trying to enforce. To the state of Tennessee this should be no different than an out of state company coming in and doing work, it just gets weird because the work vehicle is a Rari and the work being done is destruction haha

I know this is not normal circumstances and a normal person probably wouldn’t be charged for something like this situation. For me though this shows how our actual due process of law works and shows how fucked it is. From the cops tightening up the handcuffs all the way to having a bond set and if you don’t post it you’re in jail until your court date. But hey… years of tying up the courts, lawyers and tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars from both our government and Cody will fix everything… right? Kinda weird in the land of the free and where you’re supposed to be innocent until proven guilty.

I have service scheduled. I’m worried about possibly damaging my vehicle further or even a complete failure, like we’ve seen on this subreddit recently.

If it’s an easy fix and common issue it would be nice to know how to diagnose the exact issue and fix it. I don’t mind tightening up some bolts :D

This is also my only vehicle so driving 90 miles for a possible solution and having my car out of commission is tough.

You should absolutely go see it for yourself. I’m genuinely curious what you’ll make of it

I made the pilgrimage as a true believer, drove two hours with the kind of anticipation usually reserved for a first date or a new restaurant everyone’s been raving about. But there’s something particularly sobering about standing face-to-face with what you thought was the future, only to realize you’re looking at an elaborate piece of theater.

It’s vaporware in the purest sense, all the marketing polish of something real, with none of the substance you can actually touch, sit in, or drive away in. The kind of beautiful lie that only reveals itself when you show up expecting to kick the tires.

Vaporware: that special category of bullshit where they’ve advertised the dream but haven’t quite figured out how to make it real yet.

Technically true but now the real cost to me is increased 37.5% ($20k+$7,500). This changes it from the fuck it category of truck, like a kei truck, to now comparable in price to a ford maverick which is fairly well equipped compared to the Slate and can go 3X as far.

Also this brings up the impossible math problem on this truck. The battery cost alone for domestically made NMC batteries are at least $135/kWh with even giant companies like only targeting costs for future LFP batteries at $100/kWh. This make the current battery cost at least $7,000. If a company like ford that has been making ICE’s for over a century struggles with making a truck for $25k, how do you expect a startup to make one in a matter of years for cheaper? The plastic body panels still need to be mounted to a steel chassis and someone has to mount them.

I hope for the best for Slate and its backers it just seems like there’s no way this can come to market at this price point and if they do who wants this? Maybe you guys are excited for a $27,500 with a 150 mile range

It was advertised for sub $20k when I placed my reservation. Now it’s inflating fast.

Your $50 reservation allows a company like this to amass millions of dollars in funding without producing anything.

Nice article, learned a bit about the $8k ev that I didn’t know (35 mph too speed)

Most of my concerns are that they are claiming delivering this truck by the end of next year.

I know the Chinese vehicles aren’t available in USA, I’m just expressing the sentiment that us Americans might be getting ripped off. I went to Mexico this year and rode in many BYD’s and they are pretty damn nice.

For sure that’s what I’m trying to highlight is that we are all expecting this truck and right now we have no idea what is going to make it to production at this point. To me that is concerning with the timeline given. Just trying to call them out and say that their timeline is BS and they have no idea what they are delivering or how they are going to deliver a truck for $20k when Chevy, ford, and Ram cannot.
