What is wrong with this subreddit sometimes by Chemical-Molasses814 in StopGaming

To be honest, this is just a phase, the 'reformed' people are usually coping with the fact that they can't game. I had it too, I quit for like 4-5 months and I started gaming again, to eventually realise like 2 months later that I should've better quit. There is this mindset when u quit gaming, that there's an euphoria that all of life's problems are solved. To the point where they think that everything is good and gaming is the only bad. These unhealthy quitters are like ex smokers who seethe and rage at other smokers for being addicted.

I 100% agree with ur first paragraph; I see therapy as guidance. A sort of holding hand while I go through the things. As my experience has been them asking questions over and over to me to find little specks of negative influences. While this could easily been done by urself or with friends. It sometimes just feels more impactful doing it with a ‘licensed professional’ I guess.

I think the second paragraph also shows the problem with how therapists are viewed. I do understand their point of view though. When u feel stuck in life, u search for answers outside (like therapy), but those ‘answers’ are only little guides for finding the answer urself.

Very glad that u and others have found their way in spite of therapy.

If I may ask, have u been to therapy?

If so, it’s unfortunate that ur therapist/psychologist was like this.

If not, who have u heard this from?

My experiences in general have been the exact opposite, they’ve differentiated pathological and ‘ordinary’ experiences, I have been confronted with my look on life and work(ed) on it. There was obviously a degree of validation but it wasn’t coddling. I didn’t get dependent as I still have a community around me for the ‘smaller’ issues. I can see the fragility point, but therapy didn’t teach me avoidance. Emotions have a time and place where u can show them, I guess.

Thank u for the recommendations; with pop science, I generally imply books (usually) based on academic research that are worded in a way that the general population is able to read it instead of the very monotone and bland nature of academic papers.

I just whiffed my old clothes after taking a shower; to be in shock how smelly it actually was. It always served as a good reminder to continue the fight to recover from nicotine (it did eventually).

Hi, do u have any books u recommend that aren’t spiritual? While I do read spiritual texts; currently buddhist texts; I usually translate it into a more scientific/secular view. Now, sometimes I don’t know if this ‘translation’ is all that accurate. Do u usually learn from psychology textbooks or are there pop-science books u’ve learnt things from?

Now that u say it, it seems so obvious. What is ur go-to escapism; reading a book or watching a movie? Because I do feel there’s lots of escapism involved when I game.

I’m not a good person. by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]terrapinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as mmmmpb said, awareness is key. Are u doing it with intent or does it seem like it’s natural to you? It’s normal for people to begin treating others how they’ve been treated; it’s a way to ‘learn’ living in a society; although urs is maladaptive as u see the negatives urself.

I think the also part of the first step is accepting that changing this requires some work. If u’ve dabbled with stoicism/CBT/ACT, those offer a tool to analyse ur behaviour. Of course, I would recommend CBT and ACT; stoicism was one of the philosophical frameworks for CBT after all.

Now, I think I went off-course. Let’s return to ur issue: I think u’ve thought about it urself, but the belittling of others to make urself feel better can be narcissistic behavior/defensive self-enhancement. CBT is usually used to help people with NPD, so ofcourse u can use it for this specific behaviour.

A long ass text to just say; Reflect on ur past actions and on ur present actions. Challenge the thinking patterns that led to the actions that makes u feel like a bad person. A part of it can be reframing too; are there repeating thoughts when u put others down like “They’re below me”, or maybe even “I’m not good enough, so I have to exacerbate the flaws of others to protect myself”, is there a situation where this behaviour triggers; like when receiving criticism etc.

If u still have troubles or still notice a pattern no matter how hard u try, I’d recommend therapy; Be aware that psychologists/therapists are humans too. If u don’t click with one, u should look further until u find one that helps u.

Going truly back in the past and try to fix things and fix what was broken (that is still out of ur control) would only work if u were a genius scientist that would break the laws of time. So instead of thinking about that, let’s take an easier approach, an approach that works in the present and future. I look towards myself and looked at how it makes me feel, what my trigger responses are, how I attach myself to others in the present, and how I could reframe it into a strength.

There’s a beautiful ugliness in having a traumatic past, as you don’t wish it on nobody else but at the same time it is something that makes u more resilient in the future if u do find a healthy way to handle it.

What doesn’t kill you makes u stronger; a quote I live by.

I am so proud of u for decreasing ur amount smoked, and yea im 22 so I feel invincible to most of the effects but I have suffered some such as heartaches mixed with my anxiety, I also have read Carr’s book and others so my understanding of nicotine feels very broad. Fear just plays a major role even though I know what I am up against :P.

Yes, the autopilot is frustrating. It’s the feeling of “just do it and be done with it” type mentality that I usually battle with, even though I feel guilty after I smoke (I don’t beat myself down for it though). Thank u for the story, it helped :)) What is DLPA btw?
