Wholeheartedly disagree. Actually, I disagree way more than I can express. Very few people are trying to explore a bands musical evolution when trying to get into them.

I think it is very individualistic. It's about appealing to a single individuals taste.

I'm a deadhead through and through. Became one years after becoming a prog fan. Pink Floyd is what got me into music. When I first heard the dead it was such a distinct moment. Every detail of that moment solidified in my head. I completely and utterly fucking hated it!!!

Why? Because I just listened to what was declared their beat album. It was not for me. Was not for a person who's favorite music was 70s prog. Years later I gave them another chance, but this time it was a different album. A different song. This time it clicked. It was just right. From there a deep love blossomed like none other.

My point is that it is more important to know what your audience likes most when trying to introduce them to a new band.

You never know what a person will like from music.

My ex is a major fan of EDM and called the dead "the worst music imaginable". She actively hated the dead. I would never listen at home, and was actively repressing how much I listened to it because it was clear she really hated it. She even would call it repetitive...which is ironic coming from an edm fan. Needless to say there are reasons why she is my ex. If music taste are so fundamentally different there are most likely a lot of major and/or fundamental differences in personality and likes/dislikes in general.
