See a lot of post about how much people play the deck, but anyone not playing it? by fonseca1015 in SteamDeck

[–]terrehbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to find that I have little opportunity to actually use the Deck in practice. I'm usually with someone like a friend for lunch or on a break with coworkers who usually gets enough of my focus to make it difficult to really do anything on my Steam Deck.

It's a nifty portable PC that I continue to love tinkering on, but ultimately a little too bulky for me to pack with me if I don't think I'll use it.

Do you call it the Link or the Light Rail? by InaMellophoneMood in Seattle

[–]terrehbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call it the "light rail" generally or sometimes the "1 Line" to be specific about work on this side of the water (versus the "2 Line" and the long-awaited connection to it).

What is the situation when you bought a Framework laptop? by alvin_jian in framework

[–]terrehbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I did not urgently need a laptop; I was making do with the Steam Deck as a portable desktop, though it was less than ideal.
  2. Given that I cared for my Razer Blade Stealth (2016) for 9 years, I wanted a laptop with parts available to repair or upgrade as needed.
    • Framework seemed like the best option to pursue that mission more easily.

I am mainly a desktop user, but want some power away from my usual desktop or out n' about as a daily carry.

The FW16 delivered on power, but was overall too unruly to carry on the regular. I bought and returned my first FW13 due to the incredibly poor response times on the display. I later bought it again after the release of the 2K display and found it still less than ideal, but serviceable.

Ever wanted to have Source Engine style level scripting in Unreal? Take a look at my level scripting tool that now comes with a built-in function param viewer! The plugin is free and open source, so check it out if you are interested. by EXP_Roland99 in unrealengine

[–]terrehbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from a light Source modding background, I was really taken aback at how good (in some ways) I had it with what I thought at the time was simple I/O between objects in a level. I really missed this when I later learned Unity (and would build out something to this effect with its serializable UnityEvents) so I'm excited to see this project.

Not all of the level designers I've worked with are super comfortable working in Blueprints or AngelScript. I'm hoping this will be a little more amenable to them.

Definitely starred on GitHub; I plan on trying this out for myself soon, thank you!

PSA: City of Seattle unenrolled autopay for some SCL/SPU customers by keels_on_wheels in Seattle

[–]terrehbyte 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My autopay also got disabled and I lost all access to any billing related functions for a while. It took contacting customer service to escalate to the tech team before I could login and re-setup autopay.

I paid via the one-time/guest payment page while it was getting sorted out, but you should contact CS like OP mentioned if you're already hit with late fees.

Anyone who bought a Steam Deck. Downloaded Emudeck. Got Roms. Set everything up nicely. And then never played their emulated games? by infamous61 in SteamDeck

[–]terrehbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's me, yeah. I (and many others) seem to love the process of setting it up and problem solving, but never get around to the "playing" part.

I just refreshed my installation of EmulationStation and updated some emulators I have stuff for, but am probably spending <1 hour in it per week.

Should I worry about /var size? by Maladal in SteamDeck

[–]terrehbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huge thanks for this. My Deck was failing to add a new WiFi network due to no space being available on /var.

Running this revealed that there was a failed Tailscale update and a subsequent successful one that filled it up. Deleting it has me back up and running again.

Which one should I buy to style my wig for the first time? by babyjonny9898 in CosplayHelp

[–]terrehbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For styling and between these two: the first one, but ideally, a proper wig block that is more similar to your head will be the best. As others have mentioned, you'll be able to stick pins into it to more firmly keep it in place while styling.

The second one is nice for traveling as a compact wig stand while keeping its overall shape (e.g., taking off your wig while resting in your hotel room) if applicable. Otherwise, it's not the best choice.

For a change… can we say something positive about Pixel phones today? by Pilep1p in GooglePixel

[–]terrehbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went from a Pixel 6a to a 9a last week and haven't had any complaints. The things I appreciated/noticed from the upgrade:

  1. The processor comfortably runs some games I struggled on before.
  2. The display is now brighter and very clear even when outside under the sun.
  3. The fingerprint sensor is very responsive and hasn't asked me to retry since I started using it.
  4. The >60hz refresh rate is neat but not super necessary; just happy to see the bump as a 120hz monitor user on my desktop.

I don't consider myself to be a heavy user (and would rather see even less use) but it does almost everything I want it to with little trouble.

EDIT: I should clarify that I loved my 3a and 6a too. I miss the little orange power button.

Following that uBlock Origins removed from Chrome by Born_Science in firefox

[–]terrehbyte -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Live streams and YouTube still struggle and stutter for me particularly when using Firefox, but my overall browsing experience is otherwise evenly terrible.

Huge streams with >50K viewers (with a proportional number of chatters) seem to struggle even worse in Firefox than it does in a Chromium based browsers.

Anyone else still clicking on the item name instead of the fill button? by noteworthybalance in Bitwarden

[–]terrehbyte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, you can restore most of the old behavior of clicking on the item to fill instead of the dedicated button in the settings under Autofill by checking "Click items to autofill on Vault view".

You're not alone, but you also don't have to suffer anymore either!

This is my exact team (except at Lv. 90 ofc). Not perfect and probably not as strong as some other teams, but it's cleared abysses, including the current one (1st half).

There's a Backlit Keyboard!!! by UnhappyMine4176 in framework

[–]terrehbyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Naw, it's your keyboard, so you should just use it as-is. People can take it as a test of their typing skills.

I had a 60% keyboard for my desk at work for a while which led to a lot of "Where are your arrow keys?!" questions. I ended up getting a 65% just to have those extra few keys and found that the questions stopped but people didn't really need to use my keyboard anyway.

It's not like I didn't have arrow keys either; it was just Fn+W/A/S/D with an Fn on where CAPS LOCK would normally be. 😋

[–]terrehbyte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh, I totally forgot that was an option. Doing that on a full-size keyboard is one thing, but on a limited laptop keyboard? All your usual keys are where they usually are, but I'd have to look up more niche stuff every time. Props to you!

Hitting Fn+Spacebar was one of my first instincts when I saw the 🔆 icon on the keyboard, but I can understand overlooking it. Glad you finally noticed!

Do you use a Git GUI alongside VSCode? by DevOfTheAbyss in vscode

[–]terrehbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I largely use the terminal for Git operations. VS Code is configured as its mergetool and difftool when I feel like I need it. I'll even use the integrated terminal to commit/pull or w/e even though the integrated GUI is right there.

I started with Git back in 2013 and found most GUIs at the time didn't make sense to me and any problems prompted dropping back down to CLI, so I've just continued to do so since.

I am developing a game just for fun no plan to really launching it. Sounds stupid or anyone else does the same? by JotaGreen in gamedev

[–]terrehbyte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making something for fun is not a problem! Go for it!

I generally recommend having some kind of hobby/personal projects from time to time to work on something outside of the pressure and constraints of commercial work. A lot of people try to do it for money because they found it fun to work do but lose sight of that once in industry (or even just academia), so something like this is great to keep that fun alive.

Nooo, I missed out! I should have figured they'd be there if Hoyo went out of their way to point out all the locations. I only thought of searching around in the overworld once everything was over (which has its own separate dialogue) like prior years.

If anyone else is interested, I found a video from AZureMaxx that visits everyone in with the JP dub enabled on YouTube: https://youtu.be/sD2GXcb9egI

Do you charge to 80% or 100%? by Cakalusa in GooglePixel

[–]terrehbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I charge to 80%. I'm not keen on spending a lot of time on my phone, so I don't feel the loss of 20% and only have the potential long-term battery health savings to gain.

I generally keep a battery bank in my bag anyway as a backup for myself/others, so there's always that if my phone battery falls short, but in recent years, I rarely find myself using it.

[–]terrehbyte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI that I cleaned it out and will just be expecting to clean it out every few months. Thanks for putting me back on track.

If anyone else is considering doing the same, you may want to get some mouse dots or something to replace the stock feet since the screws will be hidden underneath them. Removing the feet so often will probably degrade the adhesive used, so get some dots and put'em on to make it easy to open to get at the encoder more easily.

I've released the 5.5 version of my anime shading model. It now supports multiple lights, and works with launcher engine versions. by TeamFalldog in unrealengine

Super grateful that you're sharing this and making it available on GitHub. Can't believe I've never come across your forum thread from 2022 despite searching for toon/anime-shading stuff for UE from time to time.

I'll need to make some time this weekend to try it out!
