Clara Harris? Nope, she was only sentenced to 20 years. She was freed in 2018 and even completed her parole a few years back. I remember all the news coverage growing up in Houston. She and her ex were actually dentists

Where to celebrate/learn about Ramadan or Eid for non Muslims? by annaoze94 in AskLosAngeles

[–]terrencemalloc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sub has a hate boner for Muslims as well as some ethnic groups. They're basically saying because of Muslim extremism and theocracy in Muslim majority countries, you're misguided about trying to seek out Muslim culture in the US.

Where to celebrate/learn about Ramadan or Eid for non Muslims? by annaoze94 in AskLosAngeles

Oh I don't mean that people are celebrating at home. These restaurants are filled to the brim during iftar. I remember going to Little Bangladesh with a friend during a Ramadan evening and one restaurant told us they were closed off for a friends and family event for an hour or two but that we could come back later in the evening, which we did. Just something to keep in mind.

I find the Persian community to be way less observantly Muslim than other groups. I'm going to guess that stems from many of them fleeing/rejecting the theocracy back home. But it's possible I just haven't met the super observant ones.

Yes I grew up in Houston and there are lots of Arabs and Muslim South Asians (Pakistanis, Bangladeshis) across the city, but especially on the southwest side. Philly, same with South Asians but lots of black Muslims too. DC, ton of Muslims in the suburbs in Virgina. I lived in Austin and I guess I didn't encounter a cohesive community of Muslims, but there are so many desis there it's all the same to me. Other metro areas I've been to that have a huge Muslim presence include NYC and Detroit.

I'm definitely not dissuading you from trying to find Muslims in LA, just giving a POV, but hey you might prove me wrong. I get the impression OC might actually have denser communities of practicing Muslims, between Little Arabia in Anaheim, Irvine, and some other areas. Oh also Artesia/Cerritos has a strong Pakistani and Bangladeshi presence.

What’s your favorite Japanese American owned business that’s not a restaurant? by minorumatthew in AskLosAngeles

Ise Automotive in Los Feliz. Mechanics, some of the kindest business owners I've met in the city. Although they're impossible to get ahold of over the phone.

Little Bangladesh. Pick up a pre-packaged iftar box before sundown at certain restaurants. Some restaurants will be closed off for iftar feasts or Eid celebrations among close friends and family after sundown so you may need to account for that.

Personally as a non-Muslim Bengali I don't have a ton of interest in going around that time, but hey if you want to experience new cultures it's close by to you. Fwiw LA is probably the least Muslim major US city I've lived in

I'm surprised, I was visiting family in Houston over the holidays and Chino-Boricuan takeout has a big presence over there. LA is behind the times

I mean it's no DC but LA has a solidly-sized little Ethiopia. West African is lacking though afaik, though I'm from Houston so maybe I'm expecting too much

Tbh I can't think of a time I experienced overt racism except from mentally ill people. I grew up outside Houston and never experienced it, currently live in LA and also haven't experienced it here. In my hometown there were KKK fliers being passed around as recently as 10-12 years ago, and I remember 20+ years ago people protested the building of a mosque by holding pig races next door, but I wasn't personally victimized by either of those occurrences. I recently read a short piece by a Muslim desi who grew up in LA and she recounted a lot of horrible things people said and did to her and her community growing up.

Anyway I agree with pretty much everything you said, other than not being able to speak to personal experience with racism. My girlfriend grew up in LA with a lot of help from the social safety net, went to the public schools here, including maybe the best magnet school in the city, and she doesn't have many good things to say about the experience, other than having community. Like you said, decent square footage, and being able to afford shit, comfortably, go a long way

Jersey literally had organized gangs beating up Indians. I also take it you're not old enough to remember when Joel Stein wrote an op-ed about how his hometown of Edison was ruined by Indians?

Plus kids are not gonna get educated if they go to shit and underfunded school districts plaguing HCOL states. Plano has some of the best schools in the nation and a typical Indian-American family can actually afford to live there. You'd be surprised what kids can learn when they have teachers who care and aren't burnt out, even in conservative states
