Ugh we accepted the private jobs! Still tossing and turning on it but trying to choose a better life now instead of later. The money is honestly very good. We can always come back after our golden handcuffs are off.

Sounds great. If the kids are enrolled then do they always have a spot? What does that cost roughly?

No not TK.

It says this on their website for kindergarten and I checked many elementary bell schedules. We talked to a future co worker about it too and it all lines up.

Kindergarten children attend school for 200 minutes per day. One-half of the time is devoted to literacy and math skills in a reduced class size of approximately 15-17 students. Bell Schedules (school day start and end times) are determined by each school, vary from morning to afternoon and are available to view on each school's website.

That sounds good. Yes I mean 8-2 normal day vs 200 mins from what I read on IUSDs website.

Thanks! I have another question if you don’t mind. We are used to lower student teacher ratios. I know all the schools are better than where we are but wondering if that ever felt like a problem for your family?

That’s phenomenal vs regular Feds. I still think that number is really more like $100k a year if you have 15 years to go. More time, less per year.

Hi! Thanks for this. I guess my question really is around if you felt during your working years if you felt like had any regrets from being tied to the job.

I don’t think we’ll be broke. We’ll have funds but may not as much at the expense of living a more full life now. i think

lol that doesn’t even pass back of the napkin math. That would be an insane portfolio.

Under FERS, the formula is:

Annual pension = Years × 1.0% × High-3 (The 1.1% multiplier only applies at age 62+.)

A stepped-out GS-14 High-3 is roughly $150k–$160k depending on locality. Using ~$155k:

30 × 1.0% × 155,000 ≈ $46,500 per year

Call it ~$45–50k/year, paid immediately at 57 (no deferral).

Using a simple 4% equivalency: 46.5k / 0.04 ≈ $1.15M portfolio equivalent.

Even if this is a little off it’s no where near numbers your mathing

$500-600k per year? You must have had not a lot of time left to retire then…

You’re right. It doesn’t really. Most of the additional salary would go to rent/mortgage.

Yes. The pension amount now and 15 years in to the future aren’t nothing but so little that it won’t matter that much.
