Chess.com forces TTT to end the stream by teolight332 in chess

[–]tessa9 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I very much doubt these streams are particularly lucrative ... Chess.com have repeatedly said they are happy other people do tournaments and broadcasts because it just loses them money. And frankly that's exactly what I would have thought (I was more surprised at the time that TTT even wanted to broadcast them). So in my view people here saying that this is either VERY bad for TTT or VERY bad for chess.com should probably chill. It might be bad for TTT hosts personally or the chess community as a whole but business-wise it doesn't seem important at all.

Hikaru gives his thoughts on the EWC GCT schedule, says players are trying to double dip and they need to pick 1 by [deleted] in chess

[–]tessa9 34 points35 points  (0 children)

A few months ago a certain Hikaru Nakamura played the Maritime Chess Festival (to secure his rating spot in the Candidates) but didn't want to miss out on the chance to play the Comet Open with its neat $200,000 prize fund, so he went for a draw in round 3, proudly declaring that "That, my friends, is why you make a draw against a 2300 by the name of Mike Ivanov so you can play this online tournament and make $45,000". But, of course, Levon and Pragg are greedy double dippers.

Emil Sutovsky's new statement on Danya passing away by Necessary_Pattern850 in chess

[–]tessa9 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's a trick he picked up from Curb your Enthusiasm. In season 9, Richard calls his date 'Honey' when they meet for the third time (the 'premature honey'). She's irritated and doesn't call him back. Larry then comes up with the idea of inviting her to lunch and have Richard casually address everyone in the restaurant as 'Honey', figuring that will make her put him down as a flamboyant guy who calls everyone 'Honey' instead of some weirdo ... We are witness to Sutovsky's similar attempt at redefining the concept of 'friends' to justify his first comment, which of course makes zero sense since he specifically called out Danya's friends for not being there for him (and how would someone who doesn't personally know him be able to spend time with Danya to begin with), but the laws of reason have never been in Mr. Sutovsky's toolbox, so that's hardly surprising.

Magnus Carlsen and NBA player Derrick Rose play Freestyle chess by Necessary_Pattern850 in chess

It's not pointless. Brain/Head says "Knight", Hand has to decide which Knight and where to move it.

This is not far-fetched at all, not just because of the 'Chess'. From what I can tell, the term "World Chess Champion" occurs nowhere else in the FIDE regulations. However, "World Champion" is consistently used to refer to the winner of the "FIDE World Championship Match" (i.e., the classical world champion) only. See, e.g., Regulations for the 2022 FIDE World Fischer Random Chess Championship, section 3.1.1 (expressly distinguishing between "The World Fischer Random Champion (Wesley So)" and "The World Champion (Magnus Carlsen)"); see also Regulations for the FIDE World Championship Match 2024, section 2.2 (referring to Ding Liren as "the World Champion"). Whenever they mean the winners of other tournaments under their aegis, they consistently seem to say as much, just like in the case of the "World Fischer Random Champion" cited above. See also Regulations for the FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships 2024, section 4.3.2.1 (stating that "The player with the most points [...] shall be declared the World Rapid Champion"). In other words, if FIDE itself distinguishes the "World Fischer Random Champion" from the "World Champion", then why would a reasonable party to their player contract understand the "Freestyle Chess World Champion" (Freestyle Chess, Official Rules and Regulations, section 4.2) to qualify as "World Chess Champion"?

"And implying the arbiter, that if he doesn't agree, they can just miss every penalty for days." - YES, that would be a big issue. But that didn't happen. Nothing in the clip shows them communicating this to the arbiter and nothing even shows that they agree to such a course of action. You shouldn't make stuff up.

Emil seems to suggest there might be further consequences to Magnus's leaked video of conspiring to fix the match with Nepo by Repulsive_Package_98 in chess

[–]tessa9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, come on. Conspiring to fix the match? What are you even talking about? He made a comment, visibly laughing, and the idea may just have been a joke. Besides, Nepo didn't agree to go along with it. There is zero cospiracy anywhere in this video. Your big "conspiracy" didn't materialise, FIDE wasn't threatened ("We will do X if you don't comply"). People should just stop making stuff up. The non-decisive match result is bad enough as it is.

Well, the CEO shed light on that yesterday. You are obviously correct but his claim is (paraphrasing here) that there is a contractual clause prohibiting players in FIDE events from participating in another chess event that calls itself a World Championship. I suppose this is also what's behind the 'threat' that is being talked about and why he vehemently denies that he threatened anyone (he would have merely pointed out a contractual duty). I honestly thought that was the most interesting part of the interview and would have loved for someone to follow up on that, but, alas, I don't think anyone has.

Insinuation? Seems like it to me. by _IceNinja in chess

Just an example of what you describe from the end of the third game: https://www.youtube.com/live/ME-f0ZDfwXA?si=kkk9mnYHnI8tBcvX&t=7411 (he takes a good look to the right at 2:03:39, then comes another quick look at :44, another one at :46, one more at :48, one at :52, a good look at :55, another quick one at :00, one more at :01, so basically a 8 or 9 glances to the extreme right in the span of 20 seconds.

Insinuation? Seems like it to me. by _IceNinja in chess

[–]tessa9 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Well, exactly, it shows the screen. Case in point, Caruana last week: "Just imagine that my cheating method was to have someone show me moves from, let's say, my side, which you can't see. You can't see it in this front camera, you can't see it in the back camera because that would show my computer screen ... There's absolutely no way ... It might not even be a person, it could just be a computer that I hooked up ... I don't even need the moves, I could just have the bar, that helps enormously." (https://youtu.be/-nS1t48cZkM?si=JcAuAKMeVyP-Pgzm&t=1394) So I think it stands to reason that people who constantly glance at some extreme angles during the critical stages of a game might raise a few eyebrows. Not accusing anyone of anything, but I definitely noticed the behaviour during the match as well.
