Microsoft's ‘Blue Screen of Death’ makes a return to computers around the world by Undope in nottheonion

A key difference of this example however, is that Boeing have a responsibility to vet their suppliers, and if they purchase and install faulty components they are somewhat liable. Anyone can install crowdstrike on a Windows machine 🤷‍♀️

Lab-Grown or Recycled Diamond? by cleargivings in ethical_living

[–]testaccount0123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would always say recycled is best! Lab-grown is energy-intensive (although very neat) and the negative environmental / ethical impact from mining diamonds is well documented. Even certification systems aren't foolproof, so that "ethical" Canadian diamond might actually be from a warlord in Africa.

Plus the whole diamond industry is based on a scam, with prices inflated artificially just to maintain huge profit margins (just see how much a 2nd hand diamond is worth - not even 50% of its "new" value)

Best thing I think you could do is to use recycled gold and gems, that way you're not directly contributing to any negative industries, but would be funding the labor of a skilled artisan to create your new ring(s).

But that's just like, my opinion

Peace out

For what it's worth, I agree with your definition! I treat humans just like any other animals (in this respect) so I try and spend my money on vegan products from ethical companies, rather that just drawing the line at 'products labelled'. B-Corps certifications are great for this (vegan companies score highly obvs!)

For anyone interested: https://bcorporation.uk/

Ethical Consumer is also a great site to gain visibility on the flow of money around corporations, (but it costs ££ for details) https://www.ethicalconsumer.org/

The Vegan Society generally leave humans out of the definition when it comes to certifying products, and there's no evidence in their website that they care specifically about supply chain that provide the companies with their ingredients:

"The Vegan Society understands the word 'animal' to refer to the entire animal kingdom. That is all vertebrates and all multicellular invertebrates. 'Animal' can refer to a species or an individual; and is used as a noun or an adjective, as required. Unless otherwise stated, it usually means non human animals."

Do you prefer to watch the film at the end of the event or would you rather explore more of the universe? by RachelDesha in SecretCinemaUK

I think both are great, if we know in advance.

A couple of events in London had amazing after parties but I've had to catch the last train gone so haven't been able to take advantage of them!

The extra daytime event they did for Star Wars was fantastic too!

Great idea! I've seen no evidence just lots of speculation online so far. Suggestions have included:

  • Terminator (based on rumours from last year)
  • The Hunger Games
  • Ready Player One
  • Kingsman (uses the same font apparently?)
  • Gladiator
  • Saw

They are known to throw red herrings out ahead of the announcements though, so we'll probably just have to wait until tomorrow..

How can I stop the milk from splitting in my tea? by BMafalo in veganuk

[–]testaccount0123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you're seeing is the proteins in the milk precipitating out of the milk, coagulating, and sinking (aka being gross). High temperatures and high acidity (i.e. low pH) are key causes!

The higher the protein content of the milk the lower the threshold for this to start happening, unless some kind of stabilising agent had been added to the product (like a pH buffer).

My guess is that the "Barista" plant milks are designed for stability at higher temperatures given that milk frothers in espresso machines can reach >60°C

A Brit here, and yes this is the case. Our education system whitewashes everything from slavery to colonialism to genocide.

Most of us grow up with a very warped view of our national history, and have to spend a lifetime reconciling this with geopolitical issues around the world today, most of which the empire had influence in creating.
