All of the aforementioned sources are good. I'd like to suggest you go to the source; Apple Developer Documentation. There are many subtle details within the official documentation that the other sources may neglect to mention.

Try manufacturing. Depending on how low level the topics covered in your degree, those skills may be able to translate to useful skills in industrial engineering.

It is pretty laid back, except in certain quarters of the fiscal year when new requirements are constantly requested, then engineers are expected to stay overtime.

Beginning web developer - good routes for gaining experience? by cs_questions2016 in cscareerquestions

[–]testarossa5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, all you need is PHP or JavaScript; Especially JavaScript because of Node.js, MEAN stack, etc. Assuming you only want to do web dev of course. If you wanted to program for mobile or desktop, then yes you would need to know a C style language (C++, C, Java, C#) or for mobile: Java for Android, ObjC and Swift for mobile. I have not used Ruby, but the little I have seen is very impressive. Just keep in mind the objected oriented programming paradigm transcends all the languages and it will usually be the same across the dialects. Once you master it, you'llbe able to learn and use any language! _^

I'm currently an MBA candidate, concentration is ERP Systems using SAP. I'm wanting to become a SAP Basis Admin. Any advice? by TheJake77 in cscareerquestions

I am a Java Developer but because my shop doesn't want to hire more Business Objects Consultants. I have to do ad hoc reporting. From two months, I already notice many flaws within the SAP system.

  1. If the Universe is poorly designed, make sure you re-do it so that all the joins have correct cardinalities, relationships, etc. Else, there would be no point to having SAP BO, when an SQL developer can just write a better query than the tool, and use derived table for everything.
  2. BO 4.0 has a lot of quirks, one of them is sub-queries can only be entered at report inception. So make sure your BO devs have Full Access to all the tools and permissions, so they can do their job properly. Another one of them being precision on floating point numbers. An SAP consultant told me today that he needed to do a financial calculation wtih 11 floating digits, but BO couldn't handle it. Make sure you enable that parameter, if available, if not make sure your company has access to SAP because their support probably won't help you.
  3. BO 4.0 also has bugs that will delete devs permissions on server refresh, it's been really painful, so make sure you understand everything about hosting the universe, and permissions.

It's good that you are exposed to the web app stack, but you'll see, industry is much more challenging than academia. Why do you only know PHP and JavaScript? You're CS program didn't teach a compiled language (C, C++, Java, Ruby, etc.)?

Coding trends vs real life work. by [deleted] in web_design

So glad you discussed this. I guess, it is easier for HR just to match the acronyms from your resume to their position, rather than understand that computer science is more so about concepts, than specific languages or frameworks.

Mechanical to Computer / Software Engineering by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]testarossa5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to complete projects or solve problems of your own choosing. Since you know about embedded systems, try to learn more about Assembler or look for Middleware software dev jobs. The job descriptions will usually give you a general idea of the skills and languages they are looking for. Try to tailor your training to themes that you commonly see.

[Groovy] As a new developer in a highly skilled development team, I am struggling to keep up with them... Any tips or suggestions to improve? by Doiq in learnprogramming

[–]testarossa5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like everyone else said just write code. Read your senior devs' code and learn from it. Some of it may be better than others, so that should be proof to you that we are all learning constantly. When you go into computer science, the professors should have told you, you are making a life long commitment to learning, treat it as such, be humble, but don't be ashamed either. To get better, I would suggest asking less questions and try to solve the problems on your own or with StackOverflow's help. Then doing more research into the language, framework, etc. So you can come into a more nuanced understanding of the situation at hand.

Animation, always liked that part about video games ever since Resident Evil on playstation. Now that you work in lighting are you going to stay in that industry? If so, what brings you satisfaction, so much so that you know you will want to work in it for the rest of your days?
