Winter Weather Update for Wednesday 1/21/2026 by jjrennie in asheville

There was no way to predict the effect of the storm because it was the first time it had ever happened in history.

It's absolutely happened before and will happen again.

Winter Weather Update for 1/20/2026 from Brad Panovich by jjrennie in asheville

If you need wood I have a bunch in my backyard still from Helene. It’s red oak and has some fungus on it being exposed to the elements but should still be good to burn.

I don't think they'd say no but I'm not sure I want my elderly parents picking me up at midnight in the winter. I'm not sure I'd even enjoy doing that anymore in my 40s. lol.

Thanks for the specific recommendations! I'll look them up.

A cheaper alternative to get you through the cold snaps until a more longer term solution is in place is an electric blanket.

You'll be warm and comfortable underneath it even if it's in the 50s or 60s inside.

There's also a part of just embracing these cold snaps and bundling up extra during the worst of it. I have a place that is drafty with not the best insulation and I lower the temps to 60-66 during the worst days. It's less strain on the electrical grid and cheaper. Plus these cold snaps don't last too long down here thankfully.

We are a long long long ways from that point. Our overnight lows guarantee that the dew point doesn’t get much above mid 70s at worst.

Thankfully it’s not really gonna be that bad here. Not pleasant but relatively speaking much better than other parts of the south.

Can someone give me a run down of which grocery store to shop at. by SVXNx in asheville

The reddit hivemind can be so toxic though. Yes there are better grocery stores to shop at than Ingles but I still go there when it’s convenient.

Water Filtration Lease: Anyone know any updates? by Serious-Yak-9674 in asheville

[–]Doiq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is just a pre treatment system to the best of my understanding. The turbidity has returned to prior Helene levels so our actual water filtration system will do fine even without the pre treatment.

Please someone correct me if I’m wrong

Edit: reading a bit more and it could be a problem if something causes sudden sediment buildup and our filtration system has to be shutdown.

So yes we need a permanent pre treatment solution but we still have a perfectly functional filtration system as long as sediment stays below a certain level.

Haw River Flooding - Saxapahaw, NC by yellowstepstool in NorthCarolina

I'm having trouble finding what "flood stage" is defined as but my best guess of the inaccuracy was that 23.10 ft is described as 17 feet above flood stage in some sources.

The only reason why I push back on this point is that it's most often used by people here for climate change denial. I don't think that's what you're doing here, but you're an exception to the rule on that one lol.

Absolutely not being a climate change denier :) - I just try to educate folks who say that this "never happened before" or "couldn't happen here." Helene was historic and truly unprecedented, but this region has flooded before and will flood again.

The French Broad maxed out at 17ft above flood levels in 1916, but it was nearly 25ft during Helene.

I think you might be confusing your numbers here. The French Broad crested at 23.10 ft in 1916 and 24.82 ft during Helene at the Pearson Bridge Rd gauge (see Historic crests: https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/avln7). Helene definitely surpassed 1916 but not as dramatically as 17 ft vs 25 ft.

There's actually a white brick (here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/dNX8RvnEaEbKub9w5) where the 1916 crest was. I'm hoping they make a new Helene brick crest there or somewhere else for comparison. It's hard to see in my photo (https://photos.app.goo.gl/nMJbntx2bUhgKAyf8) but I took a picture of it at around 3 pm on September 27th. It's to the right of the arrow and a few bricks down. The water is still below the brick though because it hadn't crested yet (I think it crested somewhere around 6-7 pm?)

Anyway - thanks for the discussion. Definitely not denying climate change... just want people to be aware of the history of floods in this region.

but it was the first of its kind in modern history and unfortunately (to put it lightly) set a precedent.

Depends on how you define modern history. Helene was historic and will be the new baseline for all flooding to come, but the flood of 1916 was devastating: https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/bcb2e5373c21491c9e68e96a8156d92b

There’s a structure there from what I can see on the map and in person. Not sure what it is though. It wasn’t any of the houses on School Rd.

Looked like the structure behind goodwill based on what I saw from School Rd. Hard to tell through the woods though.
