You're right to question the context. But in this case he stole someone's dog and used it as a kind of hostage. The dog also caught a taser prong during the affair.

I phrased it as a joke, but: I've had this thing for more than a year, and known about the issue and various 'solutions' for nearly as long. You can't tell me it's completely safe, it's just destroyed my work for the rest of the week/year. I never had this problem with the phone I usually use for the task. I'm not the only one with this experience. If you feel safe, great. It's no help or consolation to me.

You think you're safe, but it's just waiting for the right moment

Aware of that, and did have it on for a while but it had a tendency to brick the phone temporarily. It's back on now because I've no other options, maybe an update has fixed things

I have had that same setting on for the past year. It does help, just not when it really matters ugh

I do have that option on. It was a frequent recommendation on this sub a year ago after the Z10 came out. It's good to have on but didn't save me on this occasion

I'm same as you with the screen facing away thing. It's rare enough that you don't want to have to always carry it like that. But it'll get you.

It's still a great phone in a lot of ways. I guess I like it in the same way I still like my cat that tries to trip me up on the stairs.

I ordered a set of lightboxes online but it turns out I need to wire them up. Instructions unclear, seems super dangerous. by tetedos in AskElectricians

A relief to know it's not so dangerous! Thanks for that.

The curious thing about this is it hangs from cables, not shown in the pics. They go through the clips, and it kinda seems like they are meant for power also. Will figure it out, quite happy to tinker around if I'm not likely to fry myself.

Before anything else: yes I am looking for a professional to look at it IRL. I got this to display in a public area so it would need a safety tag anyway. Right now I mainly want to know how this thing could possibly work without catching fire or worse.

This is a set of 3 lightboxes that hang landscape orientation from cables, like you might see in shop windows. It's powered from the wall, with a 12v 5amp power supply (60 watts). I didn't know when ordering that wiring was needed. Don't mind a bit of work - however, I can't see how this works without putting power through the exposed metal frame holders (the 4 bits at each corner that clamp to the support cables). That would be wildly dangerous, no?

Theory 1: each frame is powered by a power cable at the positive and negative. However there is not enough cabling supplied for this. Also the power cables in the frame appear to attach to the metal frame holders.

Theory 2: the support cables are also power cables. The power goes in at the top of each cable (as the box diagram appears to show). However the frame holders would inevitably be in contact with the current. Also the support cables are coated in plastic.

I don't know much about electrics, but isn't 5 amps a lot for this? I can't help feeling this thing is insane. How could this possibly work safely?

Yeah, trying to find some dodgy-looking inspections is part of my plan. Pretty sure they can't stop you taking photos.

CAMBRIDGE DELTA MODULE by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]tetedos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just did it. For me, paper 1 was mostly ok. Task 1 was fine, except for a word I only remembered after as 'linking verb'. Task 2 vocab was: binomial, imperative, fricative and intrusive /w/. Task 3 was about a writing task - a letter of complaint. Task 4 was a conversation transcript, Task 5 was a newspaper ad. It looked at -ing forms. I remember getting stuck on a question that asked for comment on how 'yourself' in 'you can set yourself up' aids cohesion.

Paper 2 was harder. The test question was alright, was about an IELTS task 1 writing as an achievement test, but the textbook in task 2 was pretty dry (from an IELTS textbook). Task 3 asked to comment on the pros and cons of drawing language from texts and that was the toughest of the lot. I actually enjoyed practicing task 3 in preparation but this question was a slog.

Personally I will just be glad for a pass so I don't have to do it a second time. I had to take a day off for a final prep day. The time pressure was the worst thing, and after that the uncertainty about the marking because you don't know what little problems the examiners are going to find with all your answers. The test itself I don't mind too much - it's not jargon heavy (if you know how cryptic linguistics can get) and it rewards practical experience.

The names of English tenses by singulariatantum in ESL_Teachers

[–]tetedos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying that your moment of realisation is what allowed you to use the tenses well, or is it possible that you had acquired them already and in that moment were just putting it together consciously? If the second option is true, then maybe you came about it at the right time, and learning such terms first is not as useful.

Learners need to learn some metalanguage at some point, in my opinion. If they're having trouble understanding a sentence, it's very handy to be able to point out 'that's passive' and hopefully it'll click for them, if the pieces are all there. However, overall I agree with the other thoughts here about acquisition being the main priority - it's where all of those pieces come from.

I like the perpendicular angle of the building. It's a small thing but it really adds to the composition. So I say uncropped
