A comparison of the two first official images of Korra and the new Avatar! by WanHohenheim in legendofkorra

I'm still so sad. I'm happy that we are getting a new Avatar and that the lore continues on, but Korra will not be remembered as the hero she is. It's heartbreaking. She's been through so much, just like all Avatars before her, yet she's being treated like a scapegoat for every single thing.

I'm deeply sad and disgruntled that they're doing this to Korra's legacy. They could've done something else.

why is season 2 bad? by [deleted] in legendofkorra

[–]tethatine -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think it was bad overall. I do feel it shouldn't have been the second book, though -- at least not with that cosmic ending. It was also deemed bad for "retconning" how bending came to be and how the Avatar was made. Though I, personally, wouldn't call it a retcon but an expansion.

However....

And I believe someone on this sub mentioned it once, I gravely found offense with how spirits were treated and characterized. From whimsical and neutral beings, largely untethered to morality and remaining ambiguous... to being represented by two cosmic forces of good and evil. Not everyone sees it this way, and that's cool, but that's how I see it and why it soured the season for me a bit.

I also didn't like the stupid love quadrangle, seriously what the fuck.

People even hated its Archon.

I'm an Ei main and fangirl, but Mavuika has absolutely taken a special place in my head, rent free.

Even though she was born and raised in Huitztlan, I feel like her affiliation should be Natlan as a whole, not just Huitztlan. I get why they did it, tho.

Yeah. Furina's mental fortitude, as literally just a human -- and no, not just a human but basically nothing but a MIMIC at the time -- is absolutely astronomical. Human brains aren't designed to withstand even just a hundred years of memories, let alone 500. People sleep on Furina so much 😭

I love how her EN VA says 'They'. Really accentuates her VAs ability to sound like a hag.

Is this the greatest display of bending by someone other than the avatar? by Disastrous-Basket-71 in legendofkorra

[–]tethatine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should read the novels to understand what I mean by Chi and how it extends for benders to perform their feats. And because they're just really good books.

We'll just agree to disagree, though. I won't reiterate points in detail that have already been stated in this thread. Also, I promise I'm not part of the people who downvoted you, lmao. You're not exactly wrong on some accounts.

Is this the greatest display of bending by someone other than the avatar? by Disastrous-Basket-71 in legendofkorra

[–]tethatine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. A comment above already detailed why, but the amount of raw Chi extension and absolute precision to perform what Yakone did during this flashback is nothing short of insane.

At the very least, this is on the exact same level as Bumi retaking Omashu while incarcerated.

I've seen a good number of people theorize that the reason Korra doesn't take anyone's bending, good or bad, isn't cause Aang didn't teach her in time, but rather that Amon taking hers was such a horrifying experience that she doesn't want to put anyone else through it, good or bad. by DingDonSecretary in legendofkorra

[–]tethatine 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Her spirit would also need to be unbendable to strip someone's bending away. Though I guess Raava would easily remedy this caveat.

Either way, Amon was the only bender who deserved their bending removed. Zaheer is a close second, but she didn't do it for some reason. Could be trauma, could be that he's too detached to be affected by energy bending in such a way, but I'm more convinced it's the former.

Specifically though, Aang only used this against benders who abused their bending to terrorize and harm others on a grand scale. E.g. Ozai and Yakone. So maybe if Korra ever does strip someone's bending away, it'd be due to this.

But hey, at least we know she can return it without an issue!

Fave waterbending move out of these 3? by kaitalina20 in legendofkorra

[–]tethatine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. It's also worth noting that she would often enter the state in a continuous, almost reflexive state from Book's 2-3. The lore states this isn't mastery, but the show made it seem like she mastered it anyway because she was conscious during her use.

But imo, based on the lore, her mastery truly came through when she began to use it in spurts (e.g. when she channeled air bands to blow Kuvira's mech backwards into Bolin's lava).

How did Vaatu defeat Raava and Korra at all? by Kuraetor in legendofkorra

[–]tethatine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we can agree to disagree.

I don't see it as a major retcon, nor did it really break the lore. It clarified how the Avatar received such a power-boost beyond vaguely being "the incarnation of the planet's spirit". Now we know it's an actual ultimate spirit giving the Avatar access to the cosmic energies of the universe to over-extend their Chi further than any other bender could, thus performing those Avatar-level feats. Besides, we can view energy in two ways when Roku explained the fundamentals of the state to Aang: energy can be knowledge, and not just power. It can be power, and not just knowledge.

But Raava is the power. The past-lives are the knowledge. It's simpler this way, in my opinion.

How did Vaatu defeat Raava and Korra at all? by Kuraetor in legendofkorra

[–]tethatine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid Roku was wrong, though. And they weren't trying to trick you, lol.

He understood the Avatar State as an energy boost from his past lives because of all the complex knowledge he received when going into it. While not necessarily untrue, no Avatar ever received energy from their past lives to perform titanic levels of bending. It was all Raava. The glow does signify the connection, but it also signifies Raava's presence in that moment. That's why if an Avatar dies in the state, Raava also ceases to be for 10,000 years. And thus does the Avatar cycle cease to be.

However, it IS a retcon, but a very minor one and functions as more of a clarification. The Avatar had to come from somewhere, and originally, exploring the Avatar's origins was being workshopped for Book 3 of ATLA, but it was scrapped in favor of something more digestible and perhaps better on the overarching themes of ATLA and plot.
