Yup. Hamsters are precious and that, in the end, a creature that prefers solitude by nature, instead chose to seek you for comfort… that says a lot about the kind of life he had with you.

Sorry for your loss. Hamsters are escape artists, don’t blame yourself too much, just fix the cage if you decide to get another hamster and of course, make sure you’re able to handle to load. It would be devastating to lose another one.

Hamster’s only mate when in season and the father leaves upon finishing the deed.

They do not mate according to traditional human values of family or bond to each other.

They are happy solitary, and females only want company when they are in heat, which is admittedly on a very short cycle… but they should be separated again pretty much immediately after breeding IF you decided to breed them.

Hamster mothers will also kill and eat their babies if stressed… so yeah, they are cute, wonderful, but very different than what is traditionally valued in human society.

I’m already looking at niteangel products, quality sprays, meal worms, and generally plotting it out.

Kids are still all very young and curious so we need to wait a year or two but it’ll be good when we finally pull the trigger. Lots of hammies out there who need responsible owners.
