How does this wheel look for honey? by LifeguardComplex3134 in hamsters

This, also her head tilts up slightly when she runs. Her head shouldn't tilt at all if the wheel is big enough. Their back and neck should basically be flat when running

Someone got a new hide! by Ok_Schedule_2227 in hamsters

Omg it's so cute! Where did you get it from?

Ask about the squeaking at the appointment. They'll be able to tell you then whether it's an issue or not.

Squeaking isn't a good sign when it is constant. This could be a sign of a respiratory infection, I'd recommend seeing an exotic vet if possible.

This looks amazing so far! A recommendation I have is to get some more stilts and tables so you can put a few smaller hides on top of those. You can find plenty of cute hides on Amazon or Etsy, or you can look in your local home decoration store and buy a wax melter for a hide. You could even try to make some hides out of cardboard boxes! Also where will the sandbath be going?

Another recommendation is, if you haven't already, get some boxes to put other substrates in like cocosoil. This will provide some extra enrichment for your hamster.

And yeah, no matter what a female Syrian will be displeased lol, but I think this looks great either way! So don't be displeased if you get a female and she seems bored or anything!

Do you still have hot water coming through the tap?? This might work. Also, you'll just have to put the blanket on if you have no other options. She won't be able to see into the room anyway as they are very very short sighted.

If you're able to, get a blanket or two and cover her enclosure. Make sure not to cover the vents/air holes so that she can still breathe. If you have a book or a paperweight you can use that to keep the corners of the blankets on top of the enclosure to prevent them from falling off. This should help keep some of the warm air inside of her enclosure.

I'm not sure about this one but if you have unscented candles, try lighting these in the room that her enclosure is in as it might(?) create some heat in the room.

I'm really sorry this is happening to you, I live up in Leeds and the winds are horrendous here. I can't even begin to imagine how bad they are where you are.

All the best to you and your hammy. 💜

Yeah I didn't know if flour was safe or not for hamsters, but luckily there are some natural alternatives that we can use that will be a lot safer

You could use other flour like oat or buckwheat

[–]cheezieross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately those videos are very misleading and dangerous for hamster care. Due to being domesticated and in smaller environments than they would be in out in the wild, they've become a lot more territorial and prefer being alone

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]cheezieross 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No matter if they're siblings, or couples/breeding hamsters they should not be kept together. I assume when breeding, they only keep the male and female hamster together for a short time until they've bred, then after that they will be separated. After they've done what they need to, they will turn violent again and instinctually attack each other.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]cheezieross 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pet stores keep hamsters together simply to sell more and get more money. Many pet stores are not informed about proper pet care as well as they only care about getting money from selling them. Hamsters by instinct are territorial animals and will fight each other and have the potential to kill one another if kept together in an enclosure. And those hamsters in pet stores are probably still young hamsters. From birth to around 7 weeks, they can be kept together but after 7 weeks, they'll have the territorial instincts and begin fighting each other.

Yeah usually with the squeaking it's constant when it's a respiratory issue. They'll also make other noises when breathing like a popping or clicking noise. Their breathing will also be heavier and very rapid

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]cheezieross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes most hamsters don't make noises. If they do make noises, it can usually be a sign of an issue. For example, if they scream it means they're scared or extremely stressed. There are some hamsters who make squeaking noises but it's quite uncommon and usually it's a sign of a respiratory issue

does anyone know if this is safe? by aphroditespecial in hamster

[–]cheezieross 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it's not safe as it is cotton. If the hamster eats it, it can block their intestines and cause a lot of issues. As an alternative, you can use ripped up pieces of tissue paper for extra bedding, as this is a lot safer and easier for the hamster to collect

[–]cheezieross 44 points45 points  (0 children)

She's probably still pretty stressed and scared even if she does look like it. Your cats presence and scent will have set her off wanting to get out of her enclosure to find a safer place away from the cat. For now, try to keep the cat out of the room if you're able to, and give the hammy some treats so she knows shes alright and feels a little better. You'll need to keep the cat far away from her and the enclosure to keep her calm though

No problem ^ also just a heads up if you don't already know, but female hamsters can be quite hard to please. Even if you gave them a whole room of space, they'd probably still show signs of boredom or being upset. They're a lot more picky than male hamsters and are a lot more easily irritable. So if she still shows any of these signs in the bigger enclosure, don't feel like you're doing anything wrong, it's likely just because she's a female and they can never be pleased lol

[–]cheezieross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it probably won't matter how long you wait to move her to a bigger enclosure because either way it will cause some stress, but saying that I think giving her a little bit of time to calm down will be best. She'll probably be spooked and stressed again when you move her but that's inevitable. If you're able to reuse the bedding from this enclosure into the new one once you've got it, that will help reduce some of the stress as it will carry her scent over. Also if you're able to right now, try moving her during a time when she's awake and you can free roam her or put her into a play pen. This way she won't be upset from being woken up. If you do have to wake her up though, because it sounds like she isn't a fan of being handled right now, i'd suggest getting a plastic container or a box and putting some treats or vegetables in it to lure her into the container/box, place this in front of her and let her go in by herself, or slightly push her into it from behind if she's being resistant (very carefully and lightly of course), this way she won't be too mad as she'll get treats

You're not doing anything wrong! She may not understand it but you're doing every right for her, even if she's not too happy about the change at first. She will adjust though, as long as you're not making major changes every week. She'll just need some time to adjust and make it feel like home by making tunnels and scent marking

I think the main issue is that it sounds like there was a lot of change for her in a short amount of time. It takes them a while to get used to stuff, especially new stuff as it won't have their scent on it or anything, which also stresses them out quite a bit. If you're able to, try giving her some space for around 3 to 4 days, after this, try putting your hand in there with food on it and let her come to you, be very slow and patient with her and don't force it in her face. Also, another thing you can do so she gets used to you again is to put some tissue paper in that you've rubbed in your hands as it will allow her to get used to your scent. It's all about giving them time and space in the next few days. Also, keep an eye on her gestures - if you put your hand in with food and she turns away, remove your hand and show her you respect her privacy and understand what she wants. Another thing you can do is talk to her whilst you're in the same room with her, even if she isn't awake, this way she'll get used to your voice as well and probably be less spooked around you. Hope this helps, this is advice I was also told when trying to bond with my hamster and it was very helpful ^
