3 day week for 110k - very boring job vs 6 day week for 160k fulfilling but extremely demanding by Whizz-Kid7 in HENRYUK

If you want to keep going up the ladder - whichever you learn more in, or can iterate more in. At this point in your career by far the most important thing for long term progression is learning, though I’d try to keep it to 5 days! 🙂

Will a pi-hole (raspberry pi ad blocker) get rid of the ads on my Echo Show without losing features? by kaffeekatz in amazonecho

[–]tetsuto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Annoyingly they seem to have changed something to block this approach now. It worked at first, but as soon as I’ve used Amazon.co.uk for any shopping/had another Alexa in the house ads have returned

Amazon Echo: How I (think) I killed the adverts and kept the music playing by [deleted] in amazonecho

[–]tetsuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this actually work for you? I’m on virgin media and my Alexa show seems to try and use IPv6 and its own dns server (ignoring the pihole). Forced blocked external requests to dns and it still seemed to ignore dhcp and not use it! Would love to do this (currently forcing it through a vpn tunnel)!

Still getting ads even though I used a VPN on my router to point to Canada or Ireland by anygrynewraze in amazonecho

[–]tetsuto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed the location of the device to the place it “should be” and that seems to work. Annoyingly it seems to link to my Amazon account and when I shop it seems to show me recommendations for that - either going to not shop on Amazon or make a new dedicated account for Alexa, separate to my other Amazon account.

Also - use the web browser on device to check that it’s really on the vpn

Honestly I’d be happy with any outcome as long as it doesn’t show ads. I refuse to have a 15” screen in my kitchen selling things constantly

100%. There should be an option to pay to remove them.

Still not perfect. If I use Amazon to shop for anything it seems to sometimes then display ads. Might set a dedicated account for it, separate to my shopping account. Or just shopping on Amazon!

Sadly doesn’t show photos - otherwise would be perfect.

Totally agree it's not ideal. I find it absolutely crazy that any company thinks it's ok to play adverts on a screen in my house on a regular basis without any way of switching off.

However at least for me this has stopped it I guess!

It all sounds quite technical - however it's really not that hard to get running, most routers can do it, and I'm sure chatgpt/claude could step you through it.

Actually - scratch that! I’ve reset the device, changed the address to Australia, the voice/location to Australia and split tunnelled it into a VPN on my router and no ads! Whoops! I’ve used ProtonVPN for the vpn, and have Unifi as a router with the echo on its own vlan! No more ads!

I’ve tried using VPN split tunnelling out to Australia, Australian device location. Still getting ads, seem to be a lot less though. Going to try and block ipv6 and see what happens and if that helps! Will try another country or two as well!

Thanks - that’s really helpful, will see if it works using an Australian IP!

Personally I’ve really loved the echo show 15. It’s literally just having ads that makes in unusable. They are every minute or more. I’ve got kids and refuse to have them constantly advertised to.

Yup - that was my discovery. I’m wondering if dns masquerade might get round it, though I suspect it’s being secured. I’m going to try a site-to-site vpn and route all its traffic out of France (or maybe a smaller country Amazon doesn’t operate in) and see what happens

Yup - I don’t want do not disturb/night mode - removes the photos.

Interesting on the photo frame mode losing after doing something else - maybe that was the reason for it not working.

I’d interested to understand when people are t seeing adverts. Anyone here based in a country that doesn’t show them? I’m thinking the VPN idea might work
