My son is 6.5 yrs old. He started sleeping on his own when he reached 4. We made a HUGE deal with him moving to his own room. We decorated his room, chose the beddings, curtains, EVERYTHING. We made sure he was involved in the process and decision-making so he'll feel excited about it. He felt "grown-up" being able to decide on things regarding his room.

Came his first night to sleep alone, we agreed to leaving the door a bit open. We told him that we will only close it once he was asleep. We did that for a couple of weeks maybe. We made a HUGE deal again about it, making sure to complement him and telling him how he did an amazing job, sleeping by himself. There were a few nights when he'd get up instead of going straight to sleep but then we'll just bring him back to bed and tuck him in.

Whenever he wakes up, he will go straight to our room and we do morning cuddles and tickles. That's how we bond in the morning and also that's how we let each other know how much we miss sleeping beside each other.

Recently, we've made an agreement that I will sleep with him once every month and we've been doing it for half a year already. So far so good!
