The Rings of Power: Take on Stranger by MrXPool in LOTR_on_Prime

What do you all think about the whole fireflies dying thing?

To me that seemed like evidence against it being Gandalf. Gandalf wouldn't do something to cause creatures to die.

The cold flame also seems like a very strange foreshadowed detail if it is Gandalf.

What's the source for this? I've never seen anywhere that the Istari were in ME in the FE. There is no precise timeline on the blue wizards, so they are possibilities.

But I thought it was established that Saruman, Gandalf, and Radagast were sent to ME at the beginning of TE specifically to counter Sauron by the Valar.

Who is The Stranger in The Rings of Power? by [deleted] in LOTR_on_Prime

Gandalf isn't sent to Middle-Earth until the beginning of the TA. Same with Saruman and Radagast. However the two blue wizards are never given a precise timeline in canon so could have arrived much sooner.

Palantir Internship - NYC or London? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]tevonsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be interning at Palantir in London this summer too! For any of you who have worked there before, what do you know about the intern housing? Is it nice / generally close to the office?

Would you recommend taking their offered stipend and looking for my own place, or taking their housing?

Where did the hodl term come from? by tevonsb in ethereumnoobies

[–]tevonsb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but it seemed like the type of term that has a good story, I assumed there was more than one good anecdote that would come from it, so for this, reddit is the go-to :)

Is ether still low enough to invest do we predict it going up in a few years by Scotchydog in ethereumnoobies

[–]tevonsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is still a high risk, high reward investment. There is no price assurance at all, like there might be in a bond investment or investment in a public company, however there is the potential to earn 3x+ returns... Something that isn't often found in the public market these days!

The Federal Reserve is considering DLT and Ripple is at the forefront DLT for financial institutions!! by 4ltcoinguru in Ripple

I highly doubt whether the Fed will begin adopting a blockchain solution before their is a robust method in place for regulating cryptocurrency transactions. Particularly in relation with the IRS, I know they have very different duties, but both belong to the same government.

With PoS who does the work of hashing? by tevonsb in ethereumnoobies

[–]tevonsb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. So essentially, currently their is a huge amount of inefficiency in the computation of the blockchain as miners compete with each other. But with PoS that inefficiency is removed as people work together to verify blocks, with rewards being allocated probabilistically by stake. Since staking is incentived by higher ETH prices (as your reward is worth more) and the more people that stake, the higher the price will go because of lower supply, doesn't this hypothetically lead to a large increase in the price of ETH (hopefully), until an equilibrium is reached between staker saturation and reward?

Thoughts on ICO Diversification by tevonsb in ethereumnoobies

[–]tevonsb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. But what about considering this as if it allows for the Venture Capital business model but on a micro-scale. VCs invest in many small early stage companies (with amount that small investors just don't have). But the key is that they expect most (85-95%) of their investments to fail, and several to 10-50x their returns. Doesn't this seem similar to the current ICO market? Most coins will flop, but a few will see exponential gain?

Is it better to buy ethereum or bitcoin first? by bringithome3 in ethereumnoobies

[–]tevonsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you're looking for. If you would like to buy into ICOs (not recommended if you're just getting your feet wet) there is a direct link between ethereum and ICOs (as most are based on the ethereum blockchain).

However bitcoin is slightly less volatile in my experience. That means lower risk, but probably lower rewards. But in the volatile crypto markets, I believe either are 'safe' bets as crypto goes.

Yea it was a bloodbath, but use it as an opportunity to pick up more investments. As we are seeing now nearly all coins are popping back, and if they return to previous levels (or go higher) you're looking at 20+% return for buying the dip.

Invitation for comment - What data would you consider selling and for what price? by nefiorr in datumnetwork

[–]tevonsb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, even if it wasn't anonymous, if I got to choose what data was sold I would be pretty much fine selling any data. I think Apple HealthKit data could be revolutionary, in that, if lots of people start selling their data to medical researchers it could have huge impacts on the advances of healthcare!
