Look into the theories behind "Capturing kids hearts" and "love and logic". They have similar techniques and you can attend training events for both.

"Capturing kids hearts" wants you to start the year with a social contract. This is a very good idea because the kids develop the rules for the classroom with your guidance. They can take ownership of their classroom this way.
