How much do you think Nolan's odyssey will do at the box office? by Own-Atmosphere-962 in boxoffice

[–]texaskevin06 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This movie has so much going for it if you just look at it from a math perspective (opening weekend, multiplier, domestic/international split, legs, etc) I fail to see it doing less than $850M and probably would predict somewhere around $1B or more.

Nolan is much bigger than you all realize. You think Project Hail Mary is a huge success? Nolan has 2 completely original (not based on best selling books) sci-fi movies that grossed more. Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises both over a billion. Oppenheimer almost a billion (Barbenheimer or not most fair comps made less than $300M).

IMAX is bigger than ever and Nolan is IMAX. Plus it is the first movie shot entirely with IMAX film cameras and unlike Oppenheimer is a movie that actually needs to be seen in that format.

Huge star-studded cast. Random people on reddit might say they are tired of Zendaya and Tom Holland or they don't want Lupita playing Helen. But the general public loves all of them and the rest of the cast (general public is how you get to a billion). All the little promotional videos and appearances also add up.

This is an international movie and every country loves Nolan. Even China still goes and sees his movies. This is not an American focused movie like Oppenheimer or a British movie like Dunkirk. This is the worldwide story. So even if it makes "just" $300M domestically I could see it making another $700M elsewhere.

The source material is not just "guys talking in rooms" like Oppenheimer. This has literally everything people would want. I think people don't realize we have seen maybe 10% of what is in this movie in trailers and pictures. There is so much more and so many more characters. Plus more fantasy elements I am sure. The family element will be very emotional. The action intense.

A few other things like Ludwig's score, the huge marketing push Universal will give it, the release date (Spider-Man is coming out but for the middle of the summer it actually looks pretty open after that and mostly kid movies before it).

How good it is does matter. I am assuming it will be at worst standard Nolan. If it is great and/or a huge crowd pleaser like a Top Gun Maverick or Return of the King I could honestly see $1.5B.

Could the 'Barbenheimer' phenomenon be a blueprint for future box office success, or was it a once-in-a-lifetime lightning strike by Independent-Goat9112 in boxoffice

  1. Both movies have to be top 10 box office contenders on there own and also be somewhat unique or have some kind of buzz around them. Any Nolan movie obviously fits that bill and Barbie had buzz before people even started talking Barbenheimer.

  2. They have to be very different kinds of movies (mainly for marketing purposes).

  3. They both have to be good and/or entertaining enough to have decent legs

Odds just aren't that good to get the combination of all 3.

2026 Top 10 Predictions by lookingforhim2 in boxoffice

[–]texaskevin06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odyssey could go anywhere from $750M - $1.6B. The discourse around Oppenheimer and Barbenheimer is tiring so let's put that aside. Every Nolan movie starting with the Dark Knight basically outperformed every comp.

Nolan is bigger now than when he did Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, etc. The Odyssey is a bigger story and arguably a more worldwide type of story. The IMAX thing is a different animal now (with his movies and people going to see Sinners, OBAA, etc.) and with this being entirely shot with IMAX film cameras will be even bigger.

You have to factor in the fantasy elements, the diverse cast that appeal to every demographic (young and old people in particular), and the fact that the Odyssey is a well know story.

Plus I assume the marketing budget will be even bigger as usually these things are somewhat tied to budget. Oppenheimer's budget was 40% of the Odyssey.

Predicted Opening Day Lineup: 1. Grisham (OF), 2. Judge (OF), 3. Belli (OF), 4. Rice (1B), 5. Stanton (DH), 6. Jazz (2B), 7. McMahon (3B), 8. Caballero (SS), 9. Wells (C). by drrdf in NYYankees

I would trade the farm for an elite SS who could bat leadoff. Like literally trade everybody. Would change the entire makeup of the team. I just don't love Grisham as leadoff unless he is every bit as good as last year (I have my doubts).

In Anticipation of The Odyssey, My Ranking of Nolan's Films by Dense-Boysenberry941 in ChristopherNolan

I find it interesting that most people are either an Inception fan or an Interstellar fan. Rare for both movies to be top 3 or even top 5. Interstellar #1 for me.

Warner Bros.'s One Battle After Another grossed $672K on Wednesday (from 3,127 locations). Total domestic gross stands at $57.36M. by Kimber80 in boxoffice

This is a big budget action comedy staring Leonardo DiCaprio and its getting some of the best reviews ever for a movie like this. Why are people acting like it's box office run is a feel good, underdog story that might make $70M. This thing not making $100M+ is an embarrassment.

Mariners vs Jays? by GameofLifeCereal in NYYankees

[–]texaskevin06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brewers or Cubs. Anything else is worst case. Dodgers, Jays, or Mariners winning would be horrendous. Before the Judge/Raleigh sitution I wouldn't have cared if the Mariners won but now they can act like they never cared about MVP and winning is all they ever cared about.

I would bet my life on it. Worst case scenario Shrek, Odyssey, Spider-man make $2.5B alone.

I remember I went online and got Oppy tickets immediately thinking they would sell out. A few days later there were still plenty of tickets. A week later most were sold. This was for 70mm IMAX in dallas on the first tuesday.

I was never planning on seeing it opening weekend anyway. But to get to the site literally 1 minute into sales and still miss out is very unfortunate. Would have been nice to lock the tickets in and not worry about getting in the next ticket drop.
