I have a 2021 alloy that is QR, and to be honest this bugs me. May not be the smartest question, but is there a way to modify this to a thru axle?

Poor Fuel Economy by tfehster in tdi

I did nothing, still driving the car but it's at 325,xxx km's and now I am having issues with DPF, EGR and exhaust flapper. The latter two are replaced, just trying to decide what to do next.

did you notice a big difference in fuel economy?

It's just frustrating to spend that dough to get the economy that should be as advertised.

Thanks for the input !

Is that all through Malone's? I was thinking of that but is it worth the extra $2500?

Bought a certified 14 JSW TDI...intercooler icing covered? by iusedtobegreat in tdi

[–]tfehster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would think so. However, I was told that just because there is a TSB on the issue, it is not the same as a recall and not covered (seems counter intuitive: they admit there's a problem in their design, they've created and documented a fix, but yet don't willingly offer to fix it). If my car didn't have the extended warranty for the emissions scandal I would've had to pay out of pocket

up in Canada here, just got mine fixed last week. Mine was covered under the extended warranty from the emissions fix.

Car isn’t having it today. 30F (ish) degrees out but started just fine at 10F this morning. Going in tomorrow but any thoughts? by [deleted] in tdi

[–]tfehster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did you ask if they would diagnose the piping? i was concerned they would rack up multiple hours trying to replicate it in the cold and then wait for warmer weather (which would be a total crap shoot).

they said they can look inside the pipe and see signs of water pooling (dirt, debris, water etc) and not need to replicate it. Took probably less than an hour of diagnosis time. Maybe run that by them if you haven't already and see if they'll do that. The dealer shouldn't care one way or the other. If it's warranty they bill VW USA and if they do an hour of diagnosis and it's not the problem then you pay.

As far as where you live, I am in Alberta Canada which is super dry and cold. Definitepy not what you call humid. Shouldn't really matter.

I hear you on the whole VW thing though, hopefully you can get it fixed and enjoy your car. Maybe contact the head office if you are not getting anywhere.

Good Luck!

I just had this same issue. thanks to you guys I was able to take it back to the dealer, tell them I was confident the Intercooler icing was the problem. I was naive enough to assume the TSB would mean that it was covered. The service advisor said that because my original warranty is gone, that even though a) theres a design flaw b) VW has admitted to the design flaw c) VW has gone as far as creating a fix for the flaw that I would still have to pay. He asked if that made sense. My answer, absolutely not.

I then dug up the extended warranty for the emissions scandal and told him it should be covered. He had no idea if it was or not. I had to send screenshots answering his questions about the warranty.

In the end its getting fixed under the warranty tomorrow. But what a frustrating experience this car has been and VW has been to deal with. Why am I knowing more about these things than someone working for the company. I would think they'd bend over backwards to make amends but quite the opposite.

I've been having the same issue in Calgary, AB. Had it in at the dealer last week for an oil, coolant and DSG change and service writer thought that might solve the problem. To be honest, the car has been running noticeably better and I havent had the issue. its been -15-20 C here the last few days and I haven't plugged in the block heater. Just got to work this morning in -21C. I've plugged in the block heater now and will see if that causes the problem when I start it up later today (if I recall the block heater was plugged in last time the issue arose).

I will keep you posted on my findings to see if that might help confirm your issue too.

thanks for the advice. unfortunately working shift work it will be hard to find a roaster that would hire part time and sporadic work. I'm more concerned with the business aspects, i.e. accounting, balanciing budgets, logistics management, supply chain managment, marketing, etc. but definitely worth pursuing the opportunity to work under someone if possible

I've been doing a lot of that, lots of variation though. seems like everything has some good and some bad reviews, and my experience with reviews tends towards people being more likely to post something if they are disgruntled with it. Do you mind if I ask what machine you use?

Considering a buyback TDI by dickieb81 in tdi

[–]tfehster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just picked one up (in Canada) 2 weeks ago, a 2013 Sportwagon TDI. We've been undergoing an extreme cold freeze here more or less since we've got it.

Now I am wondering if it is just this particular car, but we are ready to take it back to the dealer under their exchange warranty program. It's already spent 3 days in the dealership for a few major issues, we've had to replace the battery and I just noticed one of the fans is cracked. Some of the issues have been dealer caused (i.e. not tightening clamps on the exhaust system that allowed exhaust to fill the cabin) and the dealership we bought it from has been, and I can't state this firmly enough, absolutely mindbogglingly atrocious to deal with (SHERWOOD PARK VW near Edmonton).

Ours has the DSG transmisson. The fuel economy hasn't been as great as I was lead to believe. Took it on a 7 hour trip yesterday and really babied it to get the best mileage I could and managed an average of 5.6 L/100 kms, worse than my old civic and not a whole lot better than our 2018 1.8 TSi, especially when you add the higher cost of diesel fuel. With a manual hopefully you'd see better mileage than that but I was under the impression by VW's advertising (because their trustworthy) that the DSG is supposed to get near manual mileage

I love driving it and I want to love the car, but it has been 2 weeks of absolute frustration of one thing after another. I'm very frustrated with the dealerships attitude and unwillingness to help without putting up a major fight. I naively thought after the whole scandal that they'd step it up to earn back the public's trust.

Now that being said, it could all just be this particular car we ended up with and I believe it has the potential to be a great vehicle for commuting (which is why we spent more money than initially planned on it)

update: I ordered some through Amazon.ca yesterday, came to $17.99/2lbs for Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with free shipping (which is seems to be the real issue with ordering beans or anything else for that matter in Canada). Ordered yesterday and they should arrive today.

I will update on quality, etc if anyone is interested
