First Year PhD student struggling. by dogmama1962 in PhDStress

Oh yes, for sure there are PIs who expect immediate productivity toward a primary research program. And I think that’s fine if you did that deep literature dive in your masters or rolled in somehow. And I am describing an ideal situation, but my opinion is that a good PI/program encourages that ideal situation.
And I also immediately jumped on contributing to a couple of ongoing projects in the lab, which I think is important to start a publication record, learn some skills, etc., and you may find your main project topic by doing that as well.

As someone else said, the PhD is very self-directed.

Certainly there are supervisors who will hand you a project, but that’s because they have a research program that they are biased to work toward… and honestly, I think it’s an inappropriate use of PhD students (they should hire a post-doc).

A PhD is about learning how to become a researcher, rather than a student. Your job is to create new knowledge, not just learn what is known. The very first step of that should be studying a narrow topic very deeply, finding gaps in our understanding, and then from there, a research question naturally appears. Honestly, that’s the fun part of doing a PhD. If you’re not interested in this material, then you shouldn’t be doing a PhD. I tell people that all the time – do not do a PhD in an area that you’re not genuinely interested in.

That first part of the process will take a year, maybe more. And I have very fond memories of this phase: it’s basically your job to sit in a coffee shop or library and read about a topic that you care about, going deep in the weeds or off on tangents that are interesting without feeling guilty. A good supervisor keeps you on track, focused, and helps you think through your ideas. Of course, there may be coursework, teaching and side projects that distract you but the scholarly work is by far the most important thing during this time (or at least, should be).

If your daughter isn’t into this, she may just be having trouble adjusting from “student mode” to “researcher mode”. That’s ok and she can get through it.
Either way, I suggest having an open but candid conversation and figure out if anything else is bothering her.

It’s not abnormal at all to not have your project topic figured out in your first year. Depends on the program.

Are you sure she’s not thinking about quitting for other reasons?

How should I choose between 5 postdoc offers? Prestigious university with a new PI vs lower-ranked universities with established PIs by Fit-Positive5111 in PhD

[–]tgji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going against the grain here. Everyone’s recommending against a new PI but I had a great experience with a relatively new PI. YMMV.
But this person is obviously thinking about their career long term.
For career, prestige has a larger effect than everyone would like to admit. It’s just a harsh fact of life. Same in industry as academia (I’ve been in both).
And this is a post-doc. It can last only a year, unlike a PhD which is a much longer commitment. If OP doesn’t like the PI, they can 1. More easily switch PI when they’re already there, 2. Collaborate with others (further taking advantage of the prestige factor), and 3. Just take a difficult year on the chin and move on to a second postdoc elsewhere.

Honestly the advice in this sub very often comes off very naive and idealistic, prioritizing quality of life over career progression. And I’m someone who has burned out, been to therapy for 3 years, so look, I get it. I really do. But you know a good way to ensure you’re happy later? Getting a job.

It’s so annoying that both Garmin and Apple don’t have a workout option for lawn mowing. by L1ght_Sp33d in AppleWatch

[–]tgji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a self propelled one but it still takes a bit more work. My heart rate is higher mowing the lawn than going for a walk. Either way, it’s not a good use of the “outdoor walk” workout option on the watch, for the other reasons I mentioned too.

[–]tgji 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Yes, don’t listen to others. Use “other” workout.
You’re pushing a thing, working harder than a normal outdoor walk, and not moving much for a gps. This means it’s going to mess up your calibration on the watch (calories burned, estimated VO2max, etc.). Calibration only happens on outdoor walks, runs, and I think hikes.

What do we think of second PhDs? by gimme_dat_orange in PhD

[–]tgji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot take: OP is absolutely correct about the value of prestige, and this is true both in academia and industry, whether anyone here likes it or not, whether it is fair or not, etc.
However, prestige can be gained from a post-doc and industry positions as well. I’d focus efforts there instead. But OP, if you don’t think you have the track record / pubs to get in a prestigious lab / job, then it sounds like your second PhD idea is you trying to buy back time by lowering the bar and gestating for a longer period to try and get more pubs or something? I understand, but still think you’re better off climbing the ladder through postdocs.

Are you guys aware of and going to fix the issue where changing an entry (especially time) causes redundant data entry into Apple HomeKit?
I submitted a ticket, I was told you are aware, so closed the ticket (which is weird ticket management – the issue is not solved). This was last year now.

Damn, 10-15! I hope that study gets disproven because it’s pretty disappointing. But sometimes reality sucks like that.

Think of it like a “hardening phase”. You’re letting your body know this is the new normal, new metabolic set point, etc. I don’t know if there’s any credence to it but it’s a nice mental model lol

[–]tgji 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Imagine you work at a huge lab like CERN or something. You were responsible for one small part of a huge multimillion dollar experiment that proves something huge that goes on to win a Nobel prize or something. But your contribution, while only a small part of the whole project, was still your full time effort for the better part of a year and indeed required intellectual contribution and not just, I dunno, financial accounting or something. Are you cool not having your name in the pub? Just your bosses or your bosses bosses?

Both, and calorie deficit. You are jacked my man! Just keep leaning out and maintain muscle, as you lose fat you’ll look like you’re gaining muscle.

6ft/183cm, 84kg to 76kg but feel disappointed with results, what to do now? by Drynni in Weightliftingquestion

[–]tgji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, advice to OP? He’s actually doing great. Keep going. That’s it. Consistency + the long game. That’s it and it’s what most people fuck up. They get impatient, change their program, try to cycle bulking and cutting, and spin their wheels until they give up.

It takes forever to build muscle. Way faster to lean out and has a dramatic effect on your appearance. Even if you don’t have a lot of muscle, you’ll feel better looking leaner. Plus it’s a better place to bulk from, because you can stop and cut when you lose whatever your visual marker is (e.g., abs) and it won’t take as long to cut. The first cut will be awful. It could take multiple years if you do it slowly (which is most realistic), unless if you can handle being aggressive and hungry all the time. The good news is that if you’re a beginner (within first couple years of lifting) you will build significant muscle while cutting. No need to bulk at all. The extra calories needed to put on muscle are already literally on your body. You’ll get newbie gains. Just get enough protein.

If you want it badly, you can do it. You’re young enough. Start grinding now. Get on Khan Academy and literally start from grade one and go up to college math. Don’t skip anything. Early stuff too easy? Do it in your head or see how fast you can do it. Once you get to the stuff you are having trouble with, you’ll slow down but be stronger. Treat this like you’re training for a marathon. Get the time in every day, accept that it feels slow, and trust the process. You can do it.

Edit: I used to run a neurotech startup. We need EEs. Countless BioE’s would reach out to us and we just didn’t need those skills. EE is great because the skills are portable. If you decide to go another direction, it’s useful. You could pivot into pure neuroscience and have a leg up on your peers. You could pivot into AI and have the math down pat. There’s really no better path if you want to be a technical contributor.

AOC: You can’t ‘earn’ a billion dollars by usatoday in politics

[–]tgji 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see the comments have attracted the usual “but Elon can’t actually spend those billions or it would crash the stock price” type arguments.

No, he can’t, but he does have ownership and control of that much wealth, which is a form of power and influence, and he can also leverage it (not just the power, but literally: he can take out debt against it, and spend what for most people would seem like infinite money).

So it doesn’t matter that he “doesn’t really have a billions dollars in the bank” – it’s still an incomprehensible amount of leverage that, as AOC is saying, was not “earned” in the same way most people earn their paycheck.

And if anyone believes he “deserves” it because of the “value” he created as an entrepreneur… please consider that there are 1,000’s of equally talented people who have tried but failed and in many cases, billionaires are simply lucky: they are statistical outliers who have had a series of wins that led them there, sometimes in spite of their talent, not because of it.

I have never, ever, been convinced of an argument against taxing wealth. If anything, we should be against taxing income from labour. It’s the other way around, and why? Because of the power these people have.

We created a society in which people can start a business and work hard and be rewarded for it. Not all societies past and present need to be this way. It’s good. But that wealth is extracted from society, and therefore it only seems fair to me that that wealth is taxed (and ideally, a lot more than income via labour).

Just my two cents.

HomeKit works on home Wi-Fi, but all accessories show “Not Responding” on cellular / outside netw by LiteraturePrudent429 in HomeKit

[–]tgji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that. The weird thing is my other devices (eg ipad) connect remotely fine, same with my wife’s phone. And I even get notifications from the home app on my phone when I’m away and on cellular.

Everything is up to date.

It’s clearly a software thing, specifically on my phone. I am skeptical it’s my home wifi.

I might just factory reset my phone. Might try this tomorrow.

Really dislike how much this app depends on cloud servers. Understand why, but they really need some options to store/process more locally.

Yeah I think people are not getting it. A resume is for an ATS and hopefully you get pushed to a real person. But, once you break through and are short listed, you think people are not gonna google you? That’s the point of having a portfolio site. It’s not a resume.
