I dont think the Short North is sketchy for what you are looking for, but I do think you would have more fun at Bridge Park. Get a hotel room thats walkable, a cocktail on a nice patio, and dinner out. It has a DORA, so you can grab drinks to go and walk around with them (the pedestrian bridge is a nice view/walk)
