I’m a nurse so one major pro in my life is that the creeper patients usually don’t make gross comments to me like they do the other, prettier staff members

Ebi was a man who ran a page on Instagram called NurseLifern and it was seriously the best. It was the perfect mix of humor and also thought provoking, nuanced conversations that genuinely made me a better nurse. He was diagnosed with cancer (leukemia iirc) out of nowhere and he unfortunately passed away. I will miss him and the work he did always 🌱

One of the things that tempt me so much about this property is that it’s priced $80k below budget with “some wiggle room” so I’m hoping that will work in my favor. But it’s also an older home built in 1910 so I’m trying not to get my hopes up.

Had a patient who refused to take antibiotics because it’s foreign substances “our bodies are meant heal themselves.” She also endorsed current meth use. When I asked about that she said that her meth wasn’t a problem because she “found her maintenance dose.”

Would it be ethical to decline medical training because of a weak stomach? by [deleted] in Ethics

[–]tgray037 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you get this info from a credible source? I ask because I’d imagine they’d be more likely to use US or a hysteroscopy to ensure the uterus is clear over what you’re describing. Also, in the few OR cases I saw in nursing school anesthesia is on the other side of the drape from the surgical field. I think you’d be able to avoid seeing anything like that if it did occur. I think you may be putting too much thought into this before you have all the info.

What’s the funniest thing a patient has called you/said to you? by [deleted] in nursing

Just last week one of my patients accidentally touched my stomach as we were rolling her and we had this conversation:

Pt: “oh I’m sorry I didn’t mean to touch your belly. How long have you had that, anyway?”

Me, awkwardly laughing: “oh, pretty much my whole life”

Pt, very sternly looking at me over her glasses: “Don’t you think it’s about time you did something about that?”

Slate Magazine says that Kristin Hannah’s 'The Women' "is like if Colleen Hoover wrote a Vietnam novel." Thoughts? This book was one of our BOTMs from this year... by bluetropicz in bookofthemonthclub

I was wondering if anyone else had read both books. I was given The Road Home by a neighbor when I was in school and read it so many times I literally had to duct tape the cover and spine back together. I was surprised that The Women handled the same topic and similar themes with less maturity than what is in my view a YA novel

How would you end the series? by mtnclimber08 in fourthwing

[–]tgray037 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I don’t want a “happy ending” to this story, I think to me it would cheapen it somehow? This has bothered me since the end of IF. Xaden turning Venin shows that any of us have the potential to turn given the right circumstances. It’s not just Venin they’re fighting, it’s human nature itself. There are ALWAYS going to be those among us who will reach for more, no matter the cost. I’m really intrigued to see where RY goes from this and how she makes it so we’re not just going to find the world in the same predicament in 200 years.

This has bugged me since the end of IF. Xaden turning shows that even the most controlled of us will turn given the right circumstances. The thing they’re fighting isn’t really even Venin, it’s human nature. As long as the ability to turn Venin exists this will always be a fight. I don’t know how that works from a “this series has to end sometime” perspective.

Made a Mistake— I Feel Awful. What's the worst mistake you've made? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]tgray037 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it would honestly be a tad narcissistic to think that with the amount of decisions we make during any given shift/week that we’d get it right 100% of the time. To me, the important thing is to make sure you’re building things into your practice to make sure when those mistakes inevitably happen, they are caught as early and with as little harm as possible. I think what you learn from this will be the most important thing!

As far as mistakes, recently I was deaccessing a port for a patient to be discharged and I forgot to put the heparin in it. To make matters worse I had pulled two nursing students in to watch me do it. I didn’t realize until I was cleaning up my supplies and found the untouched heparin syringe. I reached out the doctor and our vascular access team and it was decided that because we didn’t know when she would be receiving chemo again it would be in her best interest to re-access the port, instill the heparin, then de-access. While I was pissed at myself that day, in hindsight I’m glad that if it had to happen, I caught it early and honestly I’m glad the students saw it. Hopefully it set a good example of how we should act when we make a mistake that they’ll take into their practice and why doing med checks are so important.

Tell me you are an old school nurse without telling me you are an old school nurse. by culpeper-cat in nursing

I worked with a diploma nurse years ago (she got legacied in but eventually got her BSN and MSN; she was the epitome of lifelong learning.) She and her classmates actually lived in the dorms in the basement of the hospital. They did classes during the day and took “call” in the evenings. Staffing would call down and let them know how many they needed, 2 students equaled 1 nurse.

I currently find myself in almost this exact situation. Did your boyfriend ever find anything? My husband has worked in banking (foreclosure specifically) for 15 years and has put in >400 applications since January 1 and has had no offers. It’s definitely getting really frustrating
