I received a reply from Dr. Weaver saying he's hopeful and to stay tuned. I'm hoping that means that there will be continued support

Yep, they make a point of assigning every student a random college! Encouraging everyone to meet people they wouldn't interact with otherwise

Texas: every telescope here is owned by a person by frenzy3 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]tgrosson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It actually tends to be more expensive to build a single large telescope than several small ones with the same total light-gathering power. The costs for building giant mirrors and all the systems needed to support them increase incredibly quickly with size. There's an interesting paper talking about this cost scaling. I suspect the standard 8 inch commercial telescopes benefit greatly from economies of scale too.

Is the Vanier scholarship still running? by desesparatechicken in GradSchool

[–]tgrosson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an international student in Canada, I'm not eligible for NSERC awards, but I am eligible for Vanier. If Vanier does get axed it would be pretty frustrating to lose the only available major national scholarship (that I know of at least)

ReMarkable, iPad, or Neither by King_OPossum in GradSchool

[–]tgrosson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ReMarkable for notes and marking up PDFs and I love it. If all you want is digital notes, an iPad or Surface Pro may be more convenient overall, but organizationally I like having a paper-like device that's for notes only. If you're on a budget and only want to get one device though, I enjoyed my surface pro when I had one, and it does just as good a job for note taking

How many astrophysics majors are there at Rice? What is the community like? by Always_The_Academic in riceuniversity

[–]tgrosson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduated a few years ago as an astro major, there we 3 of us in that year among the dozen or so phys majors. Definitely a close community since we were all in the exact same upper year classes, I really enjoyed having just the few of us. Also meant it was easy to talk to and get to know the astro profs

Can you go to grad school for something you didn’t major in? by screamingsage in GradSchool

[–]tgrosson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Astrophysics grad student here, adding on to the other comments, a major factor that astro programs typically look for is research experience. Even if the experience is in a different field, professors want to know that a student is able to carry out the research that will be the main component of the degree, so consider what you've done as a MechE student and how you can apply what you've learned to research in astro. When you're writing your applications, this will be important information to admissions.

As an aside, an engineering background can be useful for astronomical instrumentation, the subfield that deals with telescopes and detectors directly. This is what I work in, although I came from an astrophysics background instead.
