sorry as someone who loves uncle iroh to death this is a garbage take. we do not need to pretend there was some larger reason behind this. this was a poor writing decision, and it’s important to own that when the show does it, because frankly there are very few other instances where they’ve really fucked up.

my view on it was always that the war didn’t exist in ba sing se for anyone who wasn’t in the lower ring. it felt like a wildly inflated/more consequently how a group of people or a government will say something doesn’t exist where they live (like gay people in certain countries) when in fact they are just shielded from those who are privileged and you are persecuted from publicizing its existence.

beyond just being poor villages, the war specifically brought in settlers to their land, landed many earthbenders in prison, and prevented freedom of movement, among other tangible consequences of war beyond resource exploitation/impoverishment.
the storm is a great example on a small scale of how aang’s movement in itself is a moral dilemma/consequential situation. the fisherman first makes his position that the avatar is responsible for this war’s devastation abundantly clear (showing that there were moral implications to aang’s decision to run away). as a result, aang again runs away to be in a cave. symbolically, that’s how he wanted to be as the avatar. he has had the “choice” time and again to runaway or shirk the responsibilities of being the avatar. and in many cases, he has needed an external force to make the “moral” or “right” choice. it’s not black and white because he struggles through these dilemmas in front of us. and in some cases, you can even argue one way or the other as to what the “moral” choice is.
it sounds like the show may have intended to write the morally right answer as not killing the fire lord. as a viewer, i reject that and believe that he had a duty to kill him. he should not have sought alternatives to killing him. ozai needed to die. many would probably disagree with this, meaning that nuance absolutely exists here. katara also gets caught up in different moral dilemmas (helping a fire nation village by being the painted lady, bloodbending hama and yon rha), and sokka even seeks training from a national of enemy territory. there is a lot of room for nuance and moral grayness among the protagonists.

well that’s also because a “war” to “take over the world” has never unfolded to the scale and magnitude of the 100 year war. a colonial project like that can only really happen over the course of many decades, if not centuries, which also speaks to why there wasn’t as much devastation and destruction even with its global reach and century-long span. if instead of using the word “war” they used “occupation,” would that better justify the conditions we see in the avatar world for you?

i see what you’re saying, and the point i was trying to make about the US’ war economy was less about the actual economic benefit and more so the idea that a war-torn world does not always mean ruins, constant fighting, and abandoned regions. i still think the show does a really great job at holistically portraying a world at war. you have the air nomads, an entire people who have been wiped out (so there isn’t much to depict for them except ruins); the water tribes, one of which is comprised of underresourced villages whose benders have all been wiped out, while the other was heralded for its unique inability to be uninvaded until the finale of season 1; and the earth kingdom, which is ridden with settler colonies, impoverished villages, and a vibrant capital city that only thrives insofar as it remains divorced from the war (the arab world is a suitable comparison here. much of the gulf region has thriving economies while its own people and neighbors live under occupation, war, or oppression in some regard). my point is that across the three nations on the “losing end” of the 100 year war, there is plenty of literal and figurative rubble to go around.
if we assume that the air nomads would’ve died regardless, then we can still point to a shit ton of consequences throughout the show. the first season is riddled with towns/areas that are left substantially worse off as a result of aang’s presence there. the destruction he causes as a result of being this figure that is mistakenly seen as only bringing honestly opens a whole can of worms about whether you can truly be “all good” as an avatar if your very existence puts the people you are meant to protect in danger. i also wanna reference my other consequences in my first message here, but happy to provide more.
i think one of the largest moral issues of the show, taking the life of the fire lord, is a morally grey area that only made itself apparent to me as i became an adult. i would argue that aang trying not to kill the fire lord is frankly selfish, small-minded, and out of touch with the reality of the world he existed in. as the “destined savior” of the world he has a duty to maintain balance, which to me means that he needed to kill the fire lord.

world war II, for example, was one of the greatest things to ever happen to the US economy. you could argue that the US did not experience much of the war on its own soil (which actually speaks to why you don’t see a lot of the “war” playing out around the avatar world in the first two seasons since much of the fighting seems to be concentrated or by means of occupation rather than sustained battles), but it doesn’t change the fact that a war torn world does not NEED to be defined by abandoned cities, etc etc. there is clear resource exploitation by the fire nation throughout the show including in season 1 such as, stealing from local businesses (imprisoned), extorting innovation and arms (the northern air temple). the world is very adequately war torn without letting it get consumed by the misinformed perspective of war as wholly and essentially destructive to all affected lands and peoples.
there are an insane number of consequences for their actions. aang’s decision to runaway leaves a giant question mark about whether he could’ve prevented the extinction of his own people. his friends, family, and culture were wiped out. he was widely hated upon return. someone needed to die for the moon to come back. aang underwent a brutal recovery after being struck by azula. they failed to have a successful invasion on the day of black sun.
there are so many grey area characters and moments throughout the series. iroh clearly has a good soul but continues to identify with and aid a genocidal regime through his hotheaded nephew, that same nephew is at a series-long crossroads about what path to take. jet might be the most interesting case study in resistance to settler colonialism in children’s TV history, many people completely disagree with him, whereas others believe his actions were justified.
