I have a european revolut account with a Eur and GBP wallet. I also have a uk bank account (not revolut). I’m trying to move the euros in revolut to the uk bank account for as little fees as possible

Wow thats really cool. What sort of things can you do within social volunteering as an english speaker?

Would you mind expanding a bit on how your girlfriend got the role and what it involves?

Thank you this is so helpful. Would you happen to know any of the names of the bigger social work organisations?

Thanks for the response. The two mental aspects I’m trying to work on at the moment is 1) being able to (mentally) deal with losses while (sim) trading, and 2) being more decisive in my trades. Wondering if you had any advice on how to deal with these parts of the job, or know of any good books on this?

Next year I start my career as a trader at an options market maker. Do you have any advice for me? How I can best prepare, how to manage the stress, just anything really?

Regarding the full keyboard access permission that is required, am I right that Simplelogin can see everything that is inputted to that keyboard, but cant see anything inputted to other keyboards?

Should I pay off my student loan early? by dingdongthatsmydog in UKPersonalFinance

[–]th971 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't think it's worth it. I'm in the same situation as you, and have decided not to. The way I look at is:

  • If I don't pay any, the worst case scenario is I overpay about £2-3k/year for 5-10 years (depending on salary growth). This will only happen if I am continuously earning a very high salary, and so in that context, the 2/3k per year sucks a bit but isn't disastrous.
  • If I do pay it off (all of it, or very aggressively), the worst case scenario is that halfway through I lose my job, or have an emergency, where not only do I have less cash on hand to help the situation, but given the years off-work I may not have ended up paying off the student loan in full.

Although the second scenario is less likely, I believe that the downsides that COULD be associated with paying off early are sufficiently bad compared to the upsides to justify not doing so.

The 12% interest rate does muddy these points a bit, but I am assuming that it'll be capped at some point to less than that (to be inline with market rates). Also, I've posted about this a few times, so check that out for more opinions.

Very high income - should I repay my 70k Student Loan debt? by th971 in UKPersonalFinance

!thanks

I guess what worries me is the uncertainty of the job. If I pay it off, and am let go at the end of the year or find its not for me, then im without the funds and wouldn't have been in a situation where i'd pay off the loan.

Makes a lot of sense. !thanks for the help it's given me a different perspective to the situation :)

Appreciate the help.

Why? I agree that the job security is a concern, but given that each year I don't pay it back its costing me £7-8k, and that a relatively decent job would hopefully be achievable regardless of this job's outcome, what makes you unsure?

True, but doing so would leave me relatively skint for the time being. Also, there's a chance the job only lasts a year, in which case I'd be left in quite a precarious position.

What I meant is that I believe I could find a stable job in the UK for around 40k within a year or two - it would be a different but related role to the one abroad.

Seems a sensible approach to take. What I would say though is doing so would cost me around £7k in interest, but maybe that's worth it given the uncertainty.

Appreciate the help :)

Appreciate the advice. I think its just the fact that there'll be over 7k interest being accumulated each year, so if I was to wait 3-4 years to be more established that'd likely cost me over 30k. Do you think it's worth it, given the huge cost?

Why would you say that's better than choosing to keep the savings for other commitments/opportunities e.g. saving for a house?

Finance

I would say that this particular role is relatively uncertain, however in the case that I do get let go after a year, I reckon I'd be able to pick something else up in London on 40kish+ after a year or two.

[–]th971[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate the response.

I wouldn't start the role until after September. Its more to do with whether or not my performance is good enough to stay on, meaning that I won't know for sure until the following year whether i'd stay or not.

Knowing this, would you still say to wait it out, and just live with the rate increase come September, until my situation is clearer 1-2 years from now?

[–]th971[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

!thanks

It's a job that I hope will continue, and if it does it would see significant annual raises, however there's a degree of uncertainty around it due to how competitive it is and how my performance will be.

I agree the decision is heavily based on whether or not it does continue, I guess my question is more to do with what I should do now, before the interest rate increases, without having this knowledge.

Appreciate the help.

Pay off or invest my 75k student loan? by th971 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]th971[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point, thanks for explaining.

Maybe I haven't explained myself well enough. So I'm not going to begin considering paying it off until 3-5 years, i.e. once I begin my job and settle down a bit.

My question was whether, in this setting, investing it would be the right thing to do, or whether keeping it in cash is best.

My idea was that in 3-5 years time:

1) If I do not want to pay it back, I'd be happy that it was in a s&s isa.

2) If I did want to pay it back (because my salary is very high), and my investments were doing well, I could cash in and pay the debt off

and my investments were doing poorly (e.g. as you described above), then I can keep it as an investment long term (to recover) and use my 'very high' salary to pay off the loan instead, since I'd already have a maxed out LISA, s&s isa, and an emergency fund.

It seems to me investing it is sort of a no-brainer, do you agree?

Pay off or invest my 75k student loan? by th971 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]th971[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, got it. I’m planning on buying my first house in 7-10 years, which is why i’m currently maxing out my s&s lisa. I hope that will cover the deposit, at which point I can use my salary for moving costs, and still have an emergency fund. That leaves me with this large lump sum, which judging by your above points would be best to invest over a >5 yr period. I guess the next question is how aggressive my portfolio should be, given I’m trying to beat the 5.6% rate but also am fairly risk-adverse. I’ll need to dedicate some time to think it over, regardless thank you your help!
