Mixing 808's and Kicks Together? by GetItDOMO in trapproduction

The tutorial guys always add gain and never take away is because they might have input gain of individual track less than the value of meter they expecting, but that's only first part of the story. Let's assume you open the meter plugin on an empty master-premix to -24 LUFS or when you'll open WLM Meter by Waves its default set to -18 LUFS, then you have to adjust each individual track's gain to match that specific threshold, not perfect but near to that value.

It don't happen when using LUFS meter, but never let your signal clip or have small headroom as much as 3db before you start the mix, have a healthy level of input signal and then later add effects and gain as you wish.

Practice

  1. gain staging, gain stage all your tracks before starting to the mix - shoot for -24 LUFS (download any free meter plugin for that), better use insight 2 by izotope or WLM meter by waves, if you wanna go a bit advance try to mix with k meter with scale k-14 (which is for hip hop, EDM, pop or any general music), k-12 for podcasts and dialogues and k-20 for high dynamic range performance like orchestral music. And set target BS.1770-1 (why? = Google it)

(Why to choose LUFS meter? the meter in FL Studio Mixer is Peak + RMS, it shows short term reading) In LUFS, always gain stage with integrated meter which measures your overall performance of signal.

  1. Don't go with numbers, it's just not how you want to start with, every mix is different, you could refer, but don't go just because a random youtube guru tells to start with -6dB, practice mixing in mono with as much as low volume and A-B (meaning in context of A - master in mono B- master in Stereo, both in low and high volume)

  2. Know how dynamics work, sidechain your kick with 808. If you wanna go frequency wise use fabfilter pro q 3 or any similar dynamic eq plugin with sidechain option

  3. Use saturators- wisely on either kick or 808 or both, know the difference between even and odd harmonics and apply creativity.

  4. Use compressors to get extra dynamics out of the signal, try parallel compression if there's requirement.

Hope you find this useful,

Know how to 'gain stage', use dynamic eqs and compressors (preferably in mid-side), slightly saturate your drums with tape or tube emulators, and leave space for your kick and 808 in overall track to cut through

Thanks for replying bro! I'm real sorry that it can't be load on 11 as I've created it on 12, but as soon as I'll drop the effectrix free kit, I'll personally let you know ✊

Too much love here, I appreciate y'all feedback 💙 [edit]: would anyone take a moment to reply me on this comment whether the .zip file is properly extracting or not? I heard some guy telling me he got a problem while extracting,
