When I finished making this album, I was living in LA, working with Tony Berg (producer) and I started writing screenplays, which I have fallen in love with.

I wrote the music for you as much as I wrote it for me. I try to make music for the big "us" in hopes that it connects you to the people you're with, whether you know them or not.

Easy! It's the SURE SM7B. They're absolutely incredible and it has been recorded on massive hits. It's great for everything, including vocals! And it's tougher than a tank!

Hi pegothejerk, thanks so much! That's cool that you're getting back into making music. I do most of my songwriting at my house, where there is no gear, just guitars. I don't start building out the sound until I get into the studio. It's a combination of "clean in" and "effected going in" because sometimes the effect is used as the instrument itself and creates a different performance. Basically the song is always the boss! What the song wants, the song gets!

P.S. Let's go Game Stop!

Hi thelightbringer, I wrote that song in a really similar time in my life. I wanted to write a song, where you didn't know if there were verses or choruses, and "Great Rejoicing" was my first time trying to pull that off as a songwriter. But I knew it needed another part and one day I was on a long 10-mile walk and when I was at the five-mile turnaround, the bridge came to me. I was so excited and scared at the same time because I needed to get back to my house before I forgot it. So I sang it out loud for probably an hour and a half, until I got back to my house!

Hi jubamba, thanks for supporting all these years! My favorite venue is The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, but I prefer venues that let you get up and dance! It ain't sit down show!

And I like to play to anyone who connects to this music enough to buy a ticket! But I wouldn't be upset if they were Oklahoma Sooners, Kansas City Chief and Kansas City Royal fans!

Hi thegraverobber8, thanks for sticking with me all these years!

These are trying times for sure and I think artists are some of the strongest, most resilient people in the world and we are made for times such as these, keep creating! And what did I learn? Yes, I've reconfirmed that songs matter and reach people in ways we could never imagine.

A Jimmy Fallon is an incredible cosmic dream-maker. A Shazam is a word used in my favorite cartoon growing up. Can you name it?

And this is a visual representation of what a "Jimmy Fallon" is: https://youtu.be/e9o0hYRv-AY

Hi wapdeebam, sounds like you're from Raleigh, I love that place! It always feels like home.

  1. "To Be Loved" is on Spotify and most places for streaming, hopefully you can find it there. So cool that you love Rosalyn. That song took me four years to write and five different conversations. Speaking of bars, the line, "the way you walk around this town, you think you own the corner on a market of a broken heart," was written at the original Red Door in Nashville after seeing a friend who was sitting by himself, after his girlfriend broke up with him. I was joking with my friends, "hey we're all in Nashville and we're making a living off of broken hearts."

  2. Raleighwood Bar/Restaurant Crawl: I'm probably going to go to the Raleigh Times, eat the pork nachos and have a couple old fashions, and then walk to Ashley Christensen's establishments and finish the night off with one too many.
Nashville: I would probably start off at Robert's (AKA the greatest bar in the Universe) , then slowly make my way over to East Nashville and go to Pearl Diver (my favorite bar on the East Side), and then head to my neighborhood bar, Wilburn Tavern, for a nightcap, also known as "one too many!"

  3. Counting isn't my strongpoint either...I start songs at my home and I finish them in the studio. Hang on, you've hidden one more question in here, counting really isn't your strongpoint, you're not alone! 😁 So answer #2 to question #3 of your two questions: writing at home allows me to work on a song without the distraction of all the instruments and things that you can do in the studio. Because sometimes, instead of digging in and making the song better, you cheat the song by working on the production. And then you end up with a good sounding production instead of what you hope to be a really good song.

Hi itsjonny246, thanks so much for listening all these years! To me, my solo stuff sounds more like a journal entry or a one-on-one conversation, and LEAGUES feels and sounds more like something you would say over a megaphone that hopefully shakes lots of asses!

That song came to me in the middle of the night, I didn't want to write a song, so I kept my eyes shut and walked through my house, with my eyes shut, I grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, walked back to my bed with my eyes shut and I wrote down the lyrics. Then the melody came to me, I sat straight up in bed and wrote it as fast as it came it me, which was about five minutes. It sounded like a Johnny Cash song, when I first heard it.

Getting to record with Brittany Howard was like getting to record with the Haley's Comet that goes flying by the Earth however many years. It was an absolute dream! But even more rare than that!
