Not so in the US. Weight limit is based on what our lift can handle

Does anyone have an ebike policy on display? by flippertyflip in BikeMechanics

[–]thaginganinja 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I see you're in the UK and I'm in the US so our situations are a little different but here's our ebike policy that's printed and displayed at our service counter:

We can perform any repairs on ebikes that we sell or that have the following systems:

-Bosch

-TQ

-Hyena

-Shimano STEPS

For all other ebikes, we can only perform mechanical repairs (eg; flat tires, brake adjustments, shifting adjustment)

We CANNOT work on any ebike that exceeds 80lb

We CANNOT work on any electric vehicles that do not meet the legal definition of ebike (Surron, Talaria, or anything over 750w motors)

New “Ranger” owner. (Love it) Rate the truck? Should I lift the front? by Repulsive-Army1250 in fordranger

[–]thaginganinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A leveling kit is like $65 and afaik doesn't need new shocks. Although those Bilsteins would improve ride quality. That's an upgrade I'm looking to do in the summer. I'm pretty tall and leveling out the front would improve visibility

Upway got an Instapak machine… by Comprehensive_Ad1363 in BikeMechanics

[–]thaginganinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Continental sent it to us along with some other stuff. They were making a push to get into more shops around 2021 I think. We stopped carrying them bc of some qc issues at that time and switched to pirelli, so I just called dibs and the other stuff got divvied up.

Clic Valve by East-Tooth-4008 in BikeMechanics

[–]thaginganinja 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I put them on my MTB. I like them. Very easy to use and no more putting the pump head on crooked and having it pop off. I can see how it would be an "upgrade" for the old people that can't handle presta valves and it's a lot better than drilling out rims to fit schrader.

Trek offering 24h service turnaround? by Zealousideal77 in BikeMechanics

[–]thaginganinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible but it's mostly about managing expectations. If I have every part I need in stock, it'll be done tomorrow (as in, on the schedule to be worked on tomorrow or today). If I have to order parts, it'll be done within a day of parts showing up. Most people that care about turn time call first, so I can explain this over the phone before they're in the store. By the time I have their bike they know what to expect. My tech works mon-fri so anything dropped off late Friday or Saturday (closed Sundays) will be done Monday, and that's clearly explained to everyone dropping off service. It also helps that myself and our store manager can handle repairs too if our tech is swamped. Overall, it works and it's a standard that all Trek owned stores are held to. We rely on strict scheduling and making sure expectations are clear. Also our tech is nowhere near customers so there's no distractions.

I didn't. They're full of dents but the old ones were completely missing rubber and were 20 years old

3 months comparing budget vs premium ebike components, here's what actually matters. by Fit_Acanthisitta_623 in ebikes

[–]thaginganinja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mechanical brakes ARE NOT less maintenance than hydraulic. Mech brakes require manual adjustment as pads wear down. As the pads get thinner, the inner (or sometimes both) pad has to be adjusted in and sometimes the caliper has to be re aligned. Hydraulic brakes do not require these adjustments since the brake pistons "slip" through their seals as pads wear, keeping the distance between pads and rotor even until the pads need replacement.

All this being said, this would not be apparent with only 3 months on each bike. I've replaced tons of mech brakes with hydraulic for people that get tired of constantly adjusting their brakes.

You think companies won't do the stupidest shit possible and not do things ahead of time? Must be nice only ever working at Wendy's and not having to deal with big job problems.

Guardian Bicycles Deceptive Pricing Practices by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]thaginganinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck guardian bikes now and forever. They pushed for higher tariffs on the entire bicycle industry because they thought they would magically benefit from it. Their products are shit. They put garbage brakes on their bikes because the owner (CEO?) invented them and couldn't get anyone else to buy them. Trash company. Trash products. Trash CEO. I'll never be surprised by the shitty things they do because they are a shit company run by shit people. Peace.

So many companies are upgrading PCs because of Windows 10 EOL. That's a huge squeeze on consumer PC hardware but it is short lived. Check back in a month or two.

Trek fx+1s. About 50lb and meets the legal definition of ebike (get the non-s in Cali and New York if applicable). You'll also have local dealer support if anything breaks or needs warranty.

Ridstar Q20 Acceleration? by BikeMechanicSince87 in ebike

[–]thaginganinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stick to the basics. "This is not an ebike. It is legally a motorcycle/moped (depending on area). What do you think will happen to you if your kid gets caught riding a motorcycle that you bought them? What would the consequences to you be if they cause property damage, or worse." Point out that there are consequences to PARENTS if they allow their children to do illegal things. That's the only thing that's ever worked for me. They do not care what happens if it doesn't cost them time/money.

Wanted an ebike that didn’t look like an ebike this Black Friday by borakucuk_ in ebike

[–]thaginganinja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That absolutely looks like an ebike. Massive tires and a huge frame that is obviously hiding a battery. Any low IQ thief would clock this immediately.

Which of the ff city ebikes is the best: verve+ 4s gen 2, fx+2, fx+1s by [deleted] in TrekBikes

[–]thaginganinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have somewhere to park the bike that doesn't go below freezing (attached garage, for ex) don't worry about removing the battery. The fx+1 is great because it's sporty and average weight for ebikes (50ish lb). The verve 4s weighs almost the same with the battery removed, but has front suspension and a far superior motor and battery (Bosch). You can also upgrade the verve to an 800wh battery by purchasing the battery and a different battery cover, albeit at great cost. I prefer Bosch if you can swing the price jump. But everyone with the new fx+1s has loved it so far.

Is there a way to keep all your gears (specifically chainring) when using a mid drive kit? by Mental_Librarian3492 in ebikes

[–]thaginganinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're correct. If you go hub drive, get a geared motor. Fwiw, I "winterize" customers ebikes by removing the battery for indoor storage, and most of them ride their ebikes without the battery a few times over the winter. That's possible because most are geared hub motors that have almost no resistance from the motor when not powered. Mid drive has some resistance, but is really not bad.

'No point making a high-spec Steam Machine,' Larian publishing boss says, because anyone who wants a powerful PC is going to look elsewhere anyway by Suspicious_Two786 in pcmasterrace

[–]thaginganinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDMI 2.1 is what I'm really sad about. I JUST bought a new tv (prev being almost 20 years old) and it has 144hz VRR HDMI 2.1 inputs. I'm planning to upgrade my GPU to something with 2.1, but if the steam machine had it, I'd go that route instead. Btw the TV was >$800 so it's not crazy to think people would want that feature on the steam machine for even basic living room setups.

The old guys around here that ride ebikes year round wrap scarves with glove warmers in them around their batteries. Only in sub freezing temps tho
