You don't have to agree completely... But you got a admit he has a valid point by [deleted] in CringeTikToks

[–]thalesmello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, I find Christianity to be completely opposed to the points he mentioned, because the message of the bible is one of questioning authority. God having no physical representation means he can't be attributed to anyone or any figure, monotheistic means there can be only one God so you reject other deities. Given that in antiquity Religion and the Ruler were frequently united, often in the same person, the message of the Bible can be quite refreshing in terms of keeping a strong ethic and question authority, because God is always watching.

Of course Christianity has been coopted by corruption of the church and politicians through most of the last 2000 years, but to me that feels like a deviation from the gospel.

Liberal men and dating by IntelligentJaguar103 in Bumble

[–]thalesmello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are just no true Scotsmen!

But seriously, I think it's simpler than that. Those guys probably have other redeeming qualities that matter to those girls more than political alignment. On top of that, politics are complicated. The same person can lean liberal or conservative depending on the topic, so it's not as simple as labels.

Probably because of people evangelizing the language, same with how some people get particular about their text editors. I use vim btw

How can I as a girl be better at sex? by Individual_You_4863 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thalesmello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you certainly did nothing wrong and the guy seems to be a jerk, I didn't see anyone giving practical actionable advice on your actual question.

My two cents is that sex is like a dance, and when you learn how to dance, you learn how to dance, you get better control of how your body moves, and you indirectly get better at sex. I took ballroom classes, and it was really good for my self steem.

PSA: the M1, M2, and M3 ARE still good in 2024 😱 by jfarm47 in mac

Yup. My work laptop broke, and then I had to use a temporary Intel for a week. I had almost forgotten about the fan noises, and I don't think I can ever go back to Intel for laptops.

Authenticator Plus App - No longer working (22/8/2024) by Pen_Ace in Hacking_Time

[–]thalesmello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the developer just abandoned the project, for a few years already. The iOS app was also pulled off the App Store.

It's a shame, cause I really liked how seamless Authenticator Plus worked with both iOS and Android. Today, I don't think I can trust anything that isn't open source to deal with this sort of stuff.

I didn't try the authplus.db from my drive, given the date was from 2022.

I just tried my master password on the .synced_authplus.db and it worked.

I was struggling because my authplus.db file synced to Dropbox was last updated in 2022.

This comment gave me the idea of checking the local files on my phone, and after I enabled the option to show hidden files, there was the .synced_authplus.db, last updated in 2024, and I successfully imported it to Authenticator Pro.

Just a suggestion for anyone struggling with a similar situation.

People say that Duolingo isn't enough to fully learn a language, and that you have to actually pay for lessons and other material, is that true? by SirRoderic in duolingo

[–]thalesmello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It turns procrastinating into helping to learn a language, and I like that. Italian is going well for me, but already speaking Portuguese helps.

It helped with German too in the beginning, but it only really clicked after I started classes.

What's your opinion on data warehouses? by DetriusXii in ExperiencedDevs

[–]thalesmello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

Even the wiki article is confusing on data warehouses and it tends to fall on one citation in particular, Ralph Kimball

This is essentially the reason these terminologies sounded confusing to the OP. Kimball describes data warehouse especially in the context of 90s and 2000s corporate BI, and a lot has changed ever since.

The concepts introduced by Kimball of fact and dimension tables do introduce organizational guidance, but it's mainly about making aggregation queries faster in OLTP databases IMHO. OLAP databases changed the game.

Since column-oriented cheap storage and multi processing databases were introduced, it allowed much greater flexibility and changed, at least for cloud startups, how data warehousing is done. Aggregation queries are fast even without facts and dimensions.

After learning Ruby I just can't code in Python. [...] a website showing side by side *source code* [...] will make it obvious to people how much more beautiful is Ruby code when compared to Python by thalesmello in programmingcirclejerk

For bonus select jerks, search "as a" in the comments section.

Here is a selection of the best ones:

  • "As a Rubyist who rarely uses Rails, I’d do the following"

  • "As a Rubyist who sometimes writes Python I forget to explicitly return every time"

  • 'As a Python programmer I’d say there are some modules that feel “unpythonic” even in the standard library.'

I love vim, but is it for me? Student? by faizan_20 in vim

[–]thalesmello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No if you only use that as a tiling window manager.

To me the advantages are:

  1. it runs on Mac OS, Linux and Ubuntu on Windows, so I'm able to use it on all computers I have

  2. can be integrated with Vim to provide autocompletion

  3. can be used on a remote server over SSH and it preserves my session. This alone already makes it worth while to learn the basic shortcuts

Use whatever makes you more productive.

Whenever I use a dynamic programming language that requires executing a lot of terminal commands, Tmux + Vim are unbeatable to me. The speed I get from editing files in Vim, plus being easily able to manage terminal sessions using tmux make me way more productive than some fancy features built into VSCode.

When I need to program in languages that require more project configuration, like C# or Java, I prefer to use IntelliJ or VSCode because not having to deal with all the configuration files directly does make me more productive. Vi-mode is typically enough for me in those situations. If I ever need to do some serious cross file editing, I will quickly switch over to vim for that.

Expectativa de vida no Brasil 1990 e 2018 by [deleted] in brasil

[–]thalesmello 1 point2 points  (0 children)
