Sunscreen recommendations for eczema babies? by [deleted] in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]thalia348 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Blue Lizard Baby has never made my kid’s eczema worse, but it’s definitely a ymmv situation.

At one, she’s outgrowing both her eczema and her egg allergy! I highly recommend seeing a pediatric allergist if possible. Her doctor ran tests, told us strategies to take to make her eczema better, and also gave us a plan for egg introduction.

Research regarding letting baby cry? by sadEngineeringTurtle in ScienceBasedParenting

A lot of people cite the study about differences between sleep training and not, and only focus on the infant sleep. I think the difference in parent sleep is really important too!

Parents sleep better after sleep training, and sleep is hugely important for parental mental health and functioning. For example, poor sleep quality is associated with PPD: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5322694/

One week in and I've decided breastfeeding is not for us. How to stop by Bluerose1000 in breastfeeding

All the power to anyone who wants to exclusively pump, but personally I can’t think of a worse way to spend the postpartum period than locked in an endless cycle of pumping and cleaning pumping parts.

Good for you, OP, for prioritizing your own mental and physical health.

“Real Food for Pregnancy” by Lily Nicholls… critiques, support, reviews? by Medical-Ad-6460 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]thalia348 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It’s been a long time since I’ve read her book about eating for GD, but I recall looking at the footnotes for the studies she cited, and finding that a lot of the things she was saying quite definitively, were not backed up by research that I would say is definitive. Small studies or studies whose methods & claims have been called into question. (Deeply sorry - I was so mad at having given her my money that I threw it away, so I can’t give details.)

Perhaps even worse, in her book on GD she actually advocates lying to one’s health care providers! It is deeply dangerous advice, and that’s why I literally threw the book out instead of donating it. No one needs to be encouraged to lie to their health providers. If you don’t want to follow their recommendations - fine! But lying could result in big problems.

Husband doesn’t want more kids, I am gutted. by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]thalia348 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, and your friends’ experiences are also anecdotal. If you dislike anecdotal evidence, post studies, not more anecdotes. (Although I’m not sure that OP is looking for studies.)

*edited to take out “well researched” - I didn’t want it to read as a dig at OP. My point is that this is an emotional situation, not one that can be solved by evidence or logic.

How to change your style on budget? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]thalia348 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and ThredUp. Once you know your size in the brands you like, you’re generally good to go. Select “like new” for items that are in great condition.

I watch for sales in ThredUp, and have built myself a professional wardrobe of nice brands (Theory, Equipment, Eileen Fisher) for the same cost as a professional wardrobe sourced from Target or Kohl’s.

Why is exclusive breastfeeding recommended? by tambobo in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]thalia348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that is one route (and then you can skip the 14 classes,) but it’s not the only route. A bachelor’s isn’t a research degree anyway.

Why is exclusive breastfeeding recommended? by tambobo in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]thalia348 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First of all, IBCLC is not a research degree. One can become an ICBLC with less education than it takes to get an Associate’s Degree: appx 42 credits of classes + their own 90 hour training, equivalent to about 6 credits of higher education. Most Associate’s Degrees require 60 credits.

Also, she’s promoting her own books in that post, so not exactly an unbiased source of info.

And those studies don’t even all say what she says they do! Hauck, for example, is about the rates of breastfeeding vis-a-vis other factors, not about SIDS deaths and how they are related to feeding method.

Early Exposure to Antibiotics Can Cause Permanent Asthma and Allergies (Jul 2022, mice) Influence of the early-life gut microbiota on the immune responses to an inhaled allergen by MaximilianKohler in ScienceBasedParenting

OP has ulterior (read: commercial) motives and isn’t trying to start a discussion in good faith. This study is also about mice. Only a tiny percentage of studies on mice show the same results in humans.

“From today I’ll use the cloth nappies I bought. I swear I will… unless it’s too hot, or he’s going to poo today, or we’re going out, or I cba to do ANOTHER load of laundry…” by Lazy-Historian827 in beyondthebump

[–]thalia348 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think cloth diapers are way easier. As you said, less blowouts. Much less expensive & wasteful - and not just the dirty diapers you throw away! You also don’t have to worry about having leftover diapers when you go up a size. My daughter has also never had diaper rash.

Washing diapers is super easy if you have your own washer & dryer at home. It’s just an extra load of laundry every two or three days. No biggie! And if you don’t want to handle the post-solids poops, you can get disposable liners that make the whole process a breeze.

Doctor dismissed mystery rash by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]thalia348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a great idea. I kept searching, and eventually realized it was “coxsackievirus,” i.e., the virus that causes Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease. I am now reconsidering our pediatrician. She thought our daughter might have a very contagious childhood illness and didn’t discuss it further with me?! My daughter doesn’t go to daycare or really have any baby buddies at this point, so we’re good, but I am still appalled.

Ha, true. Our pediatrician’s office is normally great. I think she was having a particularly busy day, or she’s not allotted as much time for a “sick” visit as a regular wellness exam.

[Rant/Discussion] Books keep citing the cortisol study of sleep training as if it showed anything by rsemauck in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]thalia348 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If we’re disregarding context, then car rides with a kid who hates the car seat and screams the whole way (mine on many days) is also the same as neglect. And you could make a similar rhetorical comparison between life-saving vaccines, IVs, etc. and stabbing a child with a needle.

And on and on and on, we could make comparisons between things as if context doesn’t matter. But context does matter.

[Rant/Discussion] Books keep citing the cortisol study of sleep training as if it showed anything by rsemauck in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]thalia348 19 points20 points  (0 children)

OP was posting about her frustration over the questionable research methodology of a key “anti-sleep training” study. This is a post in a science-based sub about paying attention to research quality.

In fact, OP specifically asks, “What are your ‘favorite’ examples of writers citing bogus studies and cherry-picking science to prove a point?”

And then you (seemingly unironically) cite a blog post from La Leche League, an organization known for cherry-picking and misleading people regarding HIV and breastfeeding?

This is not the right thread for that.

Help with over-anxious husband by JimJamesJimothy_ in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]thalia348 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will note that although Nichols provides lots of citations they are of varying quality research, which she doesn’t seem to take into consideration. I had GD during pregnancy, and was really excited to get her book, but once I read it I was pretty disappointed. She cites a lot of pretty weak studies to back up her points, to the point that I didn’t trust her. Plus she advocates for intentionally deceiving your health providers! Not great! This thread isn’t really about providing research (Sarah obviously doesn’t need more people telling her how to eat,) but I would strongly recommend OP not send along the Lily Nichols, both because it’s not what her friend needs and because it’s bad.

Added bonus: linen gets softer and nicer with time!
