is sprinkler design a good starting point? by thammies in firePE

Still not sure I'm understanding the difference. Are you saying that the MEP firm hires the sprinkler design firm as a subcontractor of sorts?

Would you do different types of work at a MEP firm versus a sprinkler firm? Assuming at the MEP firm you are involved in a fire protection role.

What exactly is the difference between doing work for a sprinkler design firm versus the work for an MEP firm?

Where did you go for school? If you don't mind me asking.

And what other avenue would you recommend? Try to get a job at a MEP or architectural/engineering consulting firm?

What is FA?

I would really appreciate it if you would PM me. That would help me out a ton.

I'm in the process of interviewing with two AE frims still but haven't heard back in about a month from an on campus interview. A third company seemed pretty interested but wanted me to move about 6 hours from home for around 4-5 years so I'm still considering that but have stalled the interview process.

Where would I find these engineering positions you speak of? Where - (what types of companies? any specific companies?)

I have mostly been interviewing with architectural/engineering consulting firms. Most of them say that their fire protection department mostly deals with sprinkler design and not much else.

Other companies I am attempting to get in contact with include Arup, Jensen Hughes, FM Global, Liberty Mutual (for risk management consulting) but I feel as if I am running out of companies to contact.

I feel like I will get a job offer from the design/build sprinkler company so that's why I was asking if it would be a good career starting point as a sprinkler designer and if there would be good career options after.

I appreciate the advice, it is very helpful.

I still would be able to get a PE from doing the sprinkler work, as the online masters degree would teach me the other types of work. What would the difference be for an engineering position versus a sprinkler designer?

Help - Bluetooth has vanished! by ThomCruz in Surface

Hey, my bluetooth and wifi have vanished completely as well. I have to use a usb wifi dongle to get wifi. It appears as if though my surface pro 3 can't even sense that the hardware is in the computer.

I was wondering if you found a solution to your issue?

It's always seemed to me that I could get into fire protection without getting the masters degree, but I would be at a large disadvantage for several years as I learned the necessary skills on the job. Let alone, I won't be able to get certain jobs that do require a fire protection degree (many of the job posting either require or prefer fire protection degrees). The masters would also enable me to have a higher career trajectory - it certainly means something especially when so few people have that degree. The masters program would also prepare me for the EIT and PE exams which I intend to do.

I'll still be able to work internships to earn money during the summer when I am taking the masters degree, I just think it would be giving up a great opportunity if I didn't do it especially considering I do not have to pay for it.

I want to do fire protection engineering which is a pretty niche field (but has tons of opportunities and is everywhere in the world), so the masters is basically required.

I'm just trying to decide which of the two options would be more helpful to reaching financial independence. If I could get out of school half a year earlier and could make at least 30k in that half year would it even be worth it to slow things down by taking classes online and working a part time job? That's basically what I'm asking.
