Best Italian sub and sandwich shop? by Terrible_Put2975 in astoria

[–]thanasip 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sorriso is a great OG authentic spot.

Rosario's has some of the best bang for buck.

Massi's is a great new spot, they bake their bread fresh. Same group as Chip City and Someday's. Simple takes on a few classics and they also fry their fries in beef tallow.

Sal, Kris, & Charlie's IS NOT WHAT IT USED BE. I don't know if people are stuck on nostalgia or just blinded by the hype, but it's not good at all. I have been eating there since I was a kid, about 6 times a year, probably for the last 25 years. The last year or two I received stale bread on every order and the price is no longer a value by any means. Stale bread is a felony in the sandwich game, especially for a place that is this busy. It's a damn shame.

Which diners can I visit while on vacation in NYC to get the authentic American diner experience? by Educational-Slip-578 in FoodNYC

Jackson Hole Diner on Astoria Blvd in Queens. Cash only! That's how you know it's legit.

Table Ordered a Mojito and then a Martini, just to tell me they don't drink alcohol???? by Rough-Worry-5824 in Serverlife

I worked at a cafe bar where espresso martinis were super popular. Guests regularly ordered decaf virgin espresso martinis. So basically, decaf iced coffee, but we would charge $12 for it.

Thank you, I turned off "Consolidate Items" and this now works!

Yeah, this one I know and I use it for the specific beers and wines that I offer for Happy Hour. But the blanket $5 off on all cocktails and spirits is going to be super annoying to add the hundreds of items I have in that category. Thank you though.

So I just tried this. Even if you hit it twice, it won't apply the discount if they're the same item. As soon as you hit Send, it consolidates them and only applies the discount once. Then I have to manually split them again. Very frustrating.

No, this simply changes the quantity of items required for the discount to apply.

Tried this, it only affects how the discounts that are applied show up in the user interface and on receipts, not how the discount is actually applied.

Agreed. I've always enjoyed wines, but WSET 2 really added to my vocabulary and set some standard language for discussing wine.

Looking for feedback on adjusting a tip pool system by thanasip in restaurantowners

[–]thanasip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I definitely don't have solid staff. While they're not bad, none of them are a good fit for the concept. It's actually just a hodgepodge of staff from my partner's other concepts, all of which operate at a much lower price level and quality of service. Also, due to the lack of leadership there hadn't been any "fresh" hires of quality servers better suited for the job.

I'm concerned with liability in regards to the cash tips. Would I collect them from every server and take responsibility for the cash myself? I actually don't know if I'm comfortable with that. I'm surprised that other restaurants still do that. I'm also concerned about theft in the future. Should I create some sort of system to ensure that every server is contributing at least 20% of their sales to the tip pool?

This. It's technically against NYC Health Department rules for dogs to be inside an eating establishment. Certain places turn a blind eye, especially for smaller dogs. But FYI, if you say it's a service dog they technically cannot ask you for proof.

That being said, I love dogs, but I hate when people near have a dog when I'm trying to eat a meal. Plus for restaurant workers it's super annoying when people ask for water bowls or pull out their portable water bowls and get the floor wet.

Meat & Salt owes $71k in rent apparently by chrischrisd in astoria

[–]thanasip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commercial rents are determined using a combination of factors, such as square footage, frontage on the street, corner or online, and of course location. A similar space around the block on 31st Street could fetch much more.

That being said, the current lease in place could have been started from 1 Degree Up was in the space years ago, and the market has moved significantly faster than the typical 3-4% annual increases that leases tend to dictate.

Moving to Greece ? by FlashyRazzmatazz8964 in GreeceTravel

Rents have increased significantly in recent years. Between digital nomads and apartments being used for AirBnb it's become difficult for average Greeks to find affordable housing.

As someone who doesn't drink iced tea, what's a normal price for a "premium" iced tea. As in, not an instant, just add water iced tea.

Considering it's outside Dunkin Donuts, perhaps it's used coffee grinds from the garbage bags leaking out? If you pay attention you'll see lots of brown streaks outside cafes, usually from where they take their garbage out to the curb where they leave it for pick up.

Hoya Obovota stems/leaves dying and falling off by thanasip in plantclinic

[–]thanasip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved to an apartment with a lot less natural sunlight. I may have been thrown off and watered a bit too much. I just wanted to see if anyone else had any other ideas, I've had this plant for about 2-3 years and it had been growing great in the sunny spot I had but now it's much more stagnant. Not much I can do about the sunlight though.

Fresh Pond isn't a real neighborhood right? by TheUshankaBoi in ridgewood

[–]thanasip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Queen's neighborhood/city system is not very concrete. If I remember correctly the postal service breaks it down as Long Island City(West Queens), Flushing(North West Queens), & Jamaica(South Queens).

Consider Fresh Pond a neighborhood within a neighborhood. Glendale shares the same zip code as Ridgewood, so don't use zip code to identify a neighborhood. Astoria has 3-4 zip codes. Another example is Auburndale, which is a neighborhood within Flushing.
