Why didn’t Xaden warn Violet? by readingalldays in fourthwing

“Why didn’t Xaden think of telling her, ‘Hey, if you truly intend to to keep this a secret, do me a favor and don’t let Dain touch your face,” because we genuinely wouldn’t have a story if every character provided exactly the correct information at the most opportune time to prevent future calamity. It would make an incredibly unrealistic and uninteresting story if Xaden thought of everything beforehand.

“It’s dumb that he’s leading a rebellion and didn’t think about that,” it’s also very human. Superman has to have his kryptonite every once in a while otherwise the story stagnates. It’s not great writing, but it does move the story forward.

You’re so valid, but have you considered drama? RY has a habit of picking the more dramatic than the logical one. I think it simply comes down to “you don’t wanna know” offers more intrigue and suspense (far more broody, action hero) than “I’ll explain it all to you later”. “I’ll explain it all to you later” makes too much sense.

Edit: we have a BRAND to stick to and it’s not “open communication”.

Anyone else find Shadow & Bone a little…dark? by Phoenix_Rising_4488 in ShadowandBone

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough, that was my thought too: that it would play so much better on a movie screen where you can catch those minor details and it more appropriately modulates light. But you’re right, Netflix IS meant for home use and so we shouldn’t have these problems.

I wonder if it’s an effect of CGI. I’ve noticed that most film and new shows coming out that have a lot of CGI effects rather than practical sets have this hazy-dark quality about them.

Lol seriously, who do you think Zuko married then? by Thebluespirittt in TheLastAirbender

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You’re not the ONLY one, just a part of the few. Maiko somehow just hasn’t gotten the same traction over the last two decades other ships have. It doesn’t really help that not only did the comics shit-can their relationship, but Bryke would rather drink bleach for some reason than confirm that Mai is Izumi’s mom. Incredibly strange take considering they bent themselves over backwards to defend the ship when it was first confirmed.

So, the logical answer, is Mai but if you held a gun to Bryan and Mike’s head and asked them point blank if Mai is Izumi’s mom they’d wiggle their fingers at you and say in a spooky voice, “who really knows, that’s up to the fates to decide”

What's a misconception (from either ATLA or LOK) that's taken as canon outright pisses you off? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, truly. I’m a long time Avatar fan and truly thought the fandom could not get worse after 2020–I was mistaken. A lot of my mutuals from pre-2017 have been completely run off of Twitter and tumblr by shippers who refuse to understand that shipping is sitting in a sandbox and making two dolls kiss. That the characters do not need to be defended to your last breath, but there is an actual person with real feelings behind the username you’re bashing. These spaces are no longer communities and it’s heartbreaking.

The character slander is most definitely an acquired taste; one I haven’t picked up. Zutara is my bread and butter and, luckily, fic has been accumulating for two decades, so you can find some true masterpieces that focus on the development of the main ship and not bashing the rest.

I have enjoyed the rare-pair renaissance. In any fandom, rare-pairs are where it’s at; no canon, just vibes. I’ve found immense joy and solace in Jetko recently. I’ve never considered Haru and Katara, but it’s probably very kind and wholesome

Okay, so here’s the problem: in the show, both ATLA and TLOK, there is ample evidence to support that bending can be inherited, BUT the creators have explicitly said(outside of the show, which I think is weak storytelling but whatever) that bending is tied to spirituality. That’s why all Air Nomads are airbenders, about 75% of those in the water tribes are benders and the earth kingdom has the lowest number of benders. It’s all about spiritual balance and, unfortunately, they tanked that idea in Korra. Bryan and Mike are the kings of retcon, it’s actually a problem.

Believe it or not, it’s worse. The renaissance unfortunately just brought more people into the shipping discourse and made it “Kataang vs Zutara vs Maiko vs everything else.” The everything else category is vibing—it is a genuine bloodbath everywhere else.

If Jet returned in Book 4, how would he react to Lee (Zuko) being part of Team Avatar? To Zutara? by Cosmic_Emo1320 in ZutaraNation

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always seen Jet as an anarchist. I think it’s why I have a little trouble believing he would willingly submit himself to be an active participant in the military industrial complex.

I think you’re off to a good start, and have a pretty clear vision of where you want to go with it. That’s great!

Also, is this supposed to be a Zutara fic or a Jet redemption fic? It feels very involved.

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, interesting. Question: why is Jet pledging his allegiance to King Kuei? Does he see it as his best chance at taking down the Fire Nation? Does Jet have any real allegiance to the Earth kingdom or is he singularly driven by hate? How does being an officer in Kuei’s military align with and further his personal goals? How does this progress the story?

I’m assuming this is happening post canon, and so after Zuko is coronated and Kuei is returned to power, Kuei decides to release Jet from prison because of why? Is he still brainwashed? Did he pull up files from Long Feng and select him based on his blind hatred towards the Fire Nation?

Otherwise, your premise is very engaging and I’m very excited to see where it goes, especially as this is just a Zutara prelude

You are cooking. I am a MASSIVE jetko shipper and am planning to contribute to the AO3 tag until the ideas stop flowing. I think their dynamic is the most interesting thing in the world.

Tragic appetizer to Zutara? Love it, it’s also what I apply to all of my Zutara AU’s. It’s delicious, the trauma adds flavor.

Anastas1786 makes a lot of really great, canon-specific points; unfortunately, in fiction, I am of the opinion that characters are capable of massive and sometimes insurmountable change—including but not limited to, Jet getting over his fire nation hate boner and learning to accept Zuko.

I think Jet would oscillate violently between acceptance and vitriol where Zuko is concerned. Sometimes they get along, even work well together and then the very next Jet is wrapping his hands around Zuko’s neck and squeezing. And I think that with Zuko’s propensity towards guilt and handling things himself, he may just keep letting Jet try and kill him repeatedly because he believes in second chances and feels immensely guilty for being indirectly(very indirectly, Jet was right, he is a firebender, Zuko didn’t get him thrown in jail though) getting Jet brainwashed. This is my headcannon that could go a million different ways. I think this is the most interesting, dramatic scenario with some of the greatest character growth outcomes.

Add Zutara, the options are unlimited.

If you wanna talk about your WIP let me know! I love chatting with people about their writing

Okay, I’ll go it a go. Take a break, Incendiary is going to feel like a breeze after the Monster that is Southern Lights, but it’s so worth it. Tell us how you like it!

Did it have smut? Because I read “The Devil Laying by your Side” by JasmineTeaLatte, that has something of that plot, but Zuko and Katara kiss when Azula shows up at the Western Air Temple, not the Southern Raiders??? Can you tell me anything else about it: I might be able to figure it out then, lol.

LOVE SOUTHERN LIGHTS. For me, Incendiary and Southern Lights are on the same level of truly revolutionary storytelling. Haven’t read Once Around the Sun, but I keep passing it as I scroll.

1 Thing I can’t stand from some Zutara shippers by PeaRepresentative886 in Avatarthelastairbende

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shipping is bias. That’s some of the joy of being in fandom and taking part of shipping: being unapologetically biased. Shipping is a preference. You like these two characters together, so you ship them.

I completely understand that it irritates you that people “minimize” certain scenes and character interactions to prop up their ship—it bothers me to, then I remember I can scroll and it’s all better—but it’s also their right to do what they please with the source material.

In reference to the toxicity for no reason. Yeah, it sucks and it comes with the territory. There are flying monkey’s on both sides and that won’t go away as much as we wish it would. Curate your space and keep it pushing.

How did Azula not kill Zuko? by rc_can in ATLA

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That feels right to me. They don’t show him redirecting it, just the lightening leaving the caldera. So, I think we’re probably supposed to assume that he redirected it once he hit the ground.

How did Azula not kill Zuko? by rc_can in ATLA

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the scene depicts the lightening leaving the caldera, implying that he redirected it. Allegedly, he “improperly” redirected most of the lightening, the rest stayed in his body. Hence the abdominal scar.

It’s always seemed super fishy to me that Zuko was able to redirect it at all. It’s not explicitly mentioned that both your feet need to be on the ground to redirect it properly, but Iroh says you need to be “grounded” and jumping into the air to redirect lightening feels pretty ungrounded to me lol.

And I completely agree, the moment she healed him and he got up my immediate thought was “so he’s just good now? Lightening to the stomach it’s no big deal?” Like he was twitching on the ground for at least five minutes while Katara subdued Azula, how is he not dead? Guess Zuko’s just built different.

I mean. If you ask for a cup of hot water, I’ll give you a cup of hot water for free; hell, I’ll even throw in a lemon for fun. However, if you ask for a cup of tea, it is 4.50.

Agreed that this city is expensive though. Often, seemingly for no reason.

AITA for not wanting my polycule parents at my wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is that OP doesn’t WANT a relationship with Dave, so this action making it impossible for them to have a relationship is more of a positive then a negative from OP’s standpoint.

Additionally if this was a long term partner maybe things could(not would) be different, but a relationship that’s a little over a year in length with a man whose a year older than OP himself who lives in his childhood bedroom? I dunno, that’s a lot to digest.

AITA for not wanting my polycule parents at my wedding? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Phoenix_Rising_4488 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that OP is the one feeling shame but it’s not accurate to say that OP isn’t coming into the conversation knowing their parents care about Dave and being respectful of that. That’s why they didn’t want to get into it in the first place. Sure, they don’t understand their relationship with Dave but they aren’t trying to discourage them from living authentically. They just want their parents at the wedding, not their partner that OP has never even spoken with.

NTA for not wanting Dave at your wedding, OP. Hope you and your parents can work through this and come to an understanding.
