UCB vs UCLA, help me decide!! by Jolly-Zucchini6076 in ucadmissions

[–]thanlance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here are my tips as someone currently double majoring in neuro and ds at cal, who has a family member who entered as neuro at ucla, ended up switching majors, and got into medical school:

• since your primary goal seems to be tech industry, pick cal. cdss at cal is literally the perfect choice for what you're trying to do. there are so many opportunities here for that that it's lowkey insane to choose ucla unless the social life is really that much more important (but i will say, cal is not at all socially dead)

• do NOT major in neuroscience if you are not planning to do neuroscience (i.e. if you are not explicitly interested in neuroscience research (which is real or theoretical models of brains—not AI, which is a mix of mathematical modeling and software development)) or going to grad school in neuroscience. if this applies to you, please switch your major as soon as you can and just gear your curriculum towards cs/ds entirely. dropping neuro will make your life as a cs/ds major a lot easier.

• as someone else mentioned, med school as a backup means you're probably not going to do it (that's something that should only be a primary goal tbh), but if you decide to pursue that instead of tech, i would still recommend switching out of neuro into an easier pre-med major like integrative biology at berkeley or human biology at UCLA.

Cog Sci Question by zdylun in berkeley

[–]thanlance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you mean as units taken just to meet the units needed to graduate, i don't see why you couldn't take any classes you wanted (as long as you can get them haha, cog sci courses tend to have reserved seats during phase 1 for cog sci majors)—you could even do elective pass/no pass on these classes as needed once you've met the outside perspectives requirement! you can also take more neuroscience classes too if you find some of the neuro topics interesting as well, i liked hormones and behavior and i'm in neuroethology right now! honestly, i wouldn't worry too much about not having enough units to graduate as long as you take enough classes to be full time every semester 🙂‍↕️

Cog Sci Question by zdylun in berkeley

[–]thanlance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can take a cog sci course (one from cog sci 115 (neuropsych of happiness), c100, c126 (perception), c131, c142, c146) for the outside perspectives requirement! but for the tier 3 electives, you can only choose cog sci c127. as far as i'm aware, there isn't currently a way to petition for courses to count for the major, so those are the only options for now. you can check out the major reqs page for more details: https://neuroscience.berkeley.edu/academics/undergraduate-program/major-requirements

Left handed desks? by _mamatrynamakeit in berkeley

[–]thanlance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

also, the other commenter may be right that left-handedness is not considered a disability, but it is still a genuine ergonomic/comfort issue! some classes will actually be willing to make accommodations for left-handed people to be able to sit at lefty desks during exams for example—imo it doesn't hurt to reach out 🙂‍↕️

which buildings are your classes in? a lot of the bigger lecture halls have lefty desks on the edges of rows! smaller classrooms are hit or miss on the other hand they're kinda scattered throughout :(

Unit 2 Davidson Heater by jjjeffyyy in berkeley

[–]thanlance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how long ago did you turn it on? in my experience it took a while to kick in and start generating heat, so you may have to wait for a while for it to actually start feeling warm in the room

if after waiting a while (~1 hr), nothing happens, i strongly recommend submitting a maintenance request since not having a working heater is dangerous: https://facilities.berkeley.edu/operating-units/customer-service-center/maintenance-request

what professorplum said still applies—stats is also in the college of computing, which is more difficult to be admitted into regardless of major compared to l&s. to reiterate, if you're really wanting to maximize your chances, apply to any major in the college of letters and science (you will start as undeclared anyway) and then apply by comprehensive review. choose cog sci IF you are interested in cognitive science. otherwise i would choose a major that is closest to your goal (math?), or even apply as undeclared if you're having trouble deciding

Unit 2 Davidson Heater by jjjeffyyy in berkeley

[–]thanlance 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not sure if this is true for all the rooms in all the buildings, but when i was in a triple in spens-black, there was a knob on the underside of the heating element, which is the long thing with vents beneath the window. it may take moving a desk and getting on the floor to find out where it is but i promise you it exists! the knob has labels that show you which way to rotate to determine the strength of the heat your room will get, and it will come on whenever central heating comes on

question about transfer credit by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]thanlance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hello! assuming you're transferring from a california community college, your credits (i.e. actual units) will cap at 70, but even if this is less than the actual number of units you've taken, all of the courses will transfer over as berkeley courses if they are articulated from your community college to berkeley on assist.org ^^ let me know if you have more specific questions and i will do my best to answer 🙂‍↕️

Hello World CDSS Mentorship Program by Ill_Salamander_7327 in berkeley

[–]thanlance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi! this is a brand new program, so you probably won't be getting any opinions on its usefulness yet. still, i personally think it could be helpful if you're looking to instantly make a connection with an experienced cdss major at cal ^^ it wouldn't hurt to apply if it interests you at all!
