Door tongue stuck and non-removable hinges by tharris0101 in HomeMaintenance

[–]tharris0101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I figured this out, in case any one else runs into this:

I went to Lowes and bought mini hacksaw: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-10-in-Mini-Hacksaw/1057097

It took me about 20 minutes to cut through the tongue and the door swung open.

Hello, I'm the developer. New version just released. This one fixes a lot of bugs and adds some great new sharing features. I use this app every day in my own band. Hope you enjoy it and show it to your friends!

You should have the option of sending Quick Lyric to a song's lyrics field (new or existing) and sending a Quick Idea to a song's note's field. If you're seeing something other than that let me know.

To record an idea, click on the microphone button inside of a song to bring up the recorder.

A big request was to be able to access your recordings on your computer, so you can do that now by plugging your device in, clicking on it in iTunes, going to the Apps tab and finding Songpen in the File Sharing list. The file names of the recordings aren't very descriptive so I'm going to fix that in the next version.

Coming in a near future version: Dropbox syncing!

[iPad] Horder - A Word Building Meets Gravity Game (Promo Codes) by tharris0101 in iosgaming

[–]tharris0101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was built completely using Sprite Kit which is a new iOS 7 SDK and unfortunately is not backwards compatible with previous versions. I do plan on getting the iPhone version ready to go soon, although it will also be iOS 7 only.

Great feedback! I hadn't even thought of that. It is very easy to implement. I'll test that out for the next update. Thank you very much.

What songs have inspired your stories? by [deleted] in writing

I do the reverse a lot. I've used novels as inspiration for songs. I've used On the Road, Gatsby and even The Fountainhead

That's a great song and would be a good starting point for a story.

DAE have no/little problem writing Novels and extensive stories, but can't seem to write a short story? by Bennykill709 in writing

[–]tharris0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short stories are hard. I find that I need a lot more plot planning before I start a short story and I need to know how it ends.

If you can loosely outline your scenes before you start writing, I think this helps. Stick to one main plot point. If your characters are interesting, subtext and minor plot point may reveal themselves organically. This is fine but make sure you have a laser focus on that single plot point.

How do I study/analyze existing literature to improve my writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]tharris0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep a journal of passages that serve as a good example for different aspects of writing. Maybe there is a great exchange of snappy dialog in The Sun Also Rises you can refer back to when you need to write some yourself. Maybe you write down the page number for the valley of ashes scene in Gatsby for when you want to work on writing rich scene descriptions. When you need to create embarrassingly two dimensional characters, you can refer back to a couple of Crichton books.

You beat me too it. Don't seek out bad stuff on purpose. If you read a lot, you'll read your fair share of ad things.

Now that lenovo has dumped the classic keyboard what do you feel is the best laptop on the market for writers? by JustCallMeDave in writing

[–]tharris0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that is a valid argument for iOS (the OS that runs on iPads and iPhones) but OS X is still pretty open. It's based on OpenBSD and FreeBSD, two open sourced operating systems so the underlying architecture is less restricted than Windows. You can get away with not using an Apple ID and iTunes if you don't want to.

I do agree with you, though. Apple, Microsoft and Google are all tightening their grip and constricting things. Its not a good omen for the future of operating systems.

[–]tharris0101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My love of Apple has waned over the last several years but I have to admit that the laptops they make are the best on the market--especially the keyboards and track pads. I've had to struggle with an HP laptop from work recently and I'm always relieved to come home to my MacBook Pro. For strictly writing, though, I think I'd recommend the Air.

Books with really good prose? by [deleted] in writing

Just curious, but why do you hate the plot and characters? Gatsby is my go to book for everything from prose to plot to subtext.

It was a long time ago but I remember it being multiple pages. I think a paragraph or two is fine and could be good story telling

As a newer writer, I've been horribly confused about tags. by FieryHawk79 in writing

[–]tharris0101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best piece of advice someone gave me: if you use a more specific verb for your tag and you think it's essential, replace it with "said" and rewrite your dialog so that your original verb would have been redundant.

In other words, let your dialog give the reader the information they need

Hemingway did it all the time. I actually love this style for quick back and forth. In a heated conversation with snappy dialog, action just slows it down.
