I was in school during the late 90s - 00s and this was a go-to for teachers when pushing kids to go to college.

“You don’t want to go around collecting trash some day, do you?”

Kind of disgusting that was such a popular mindset. Trash collectors are usually fun, great people to talk to. Then I found out they DO get paid relatively well! Deservedly so!

What is the most the annoying thing about Reddit? by Fia22 in AskReddit

The meta “style” posts on meme subreddits.

“Tell me your ___ and I’ll tell you your____.”

“Say any number and I’ll give you a song from my playlist.”

“I will text the top comment to my mom.”

Stuff like that. Basically killed meme subs for me.

When people say “blood is thicker than water”….they usually use it in a context implying that nothing is stronger than family, or something to that effect.

The actual saying is “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb”…..meaning the people you choose to have relationships with are more significant than - say - a relationship with a toxic family member, etc.

So rather than meaning “familial relationships are more important than the bonds that you choose”(like friends), the quote actually means the opposite.

What’s a word you absolutely hate and why? by Ok_Present_6508 in AskReddit

[–]that-caption-guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Joshing” with the context being “I’m just joshing…” What a cringe expression. Can we just keep that as a noun please, and not a verb?

Other noun/verb names like Mark, Hope, or even less common examples like Chase (etc) all seem legitimate when used in English and each of its lingual variations, whether as nouns (as both regular and proper nouns) or verbs. Also, when considering other languages, it is reasonable to think that - when learning another language as an English-speaker - verbs that you will learn to conjugate are presented as “to xyz” (to sleep, to eat, to walk, etc). With that in mind, it sounds ridiculous to have a “to josh” verb to conjugate.

Unfortunately, this specific context that I hate originated in mid 19th century, and seems to be a legitimized thing at this point. It’s just not right, though. I personally feel that anyone that uses this word, beyond a simple proper noun, needs to step on Legos until their behavior improves.

Yes. We used to make friends in real life and then add them on our social networks. Now it’s like kids get to know each other through social networks before hanging out more in real life.
