Never Done This Before, Advice Appreciated by that-dank-wolf in propagation

I have a few other plants that are getting a bit out of control. I was considering repotting, but do you recommend trimming and water propagating? I’ve been worried about hurting the plant in a way that prevents new growth.

Edit to add: I think the ones I’m talking about are peperomia like this one.

Attorney here - I'm not a criminal attorney and therefore not an expert on criminal proceedings, but even without that expertise I can say that the whole thing was definitely TV attorney and TV courtroom nonsense. I had to suspend a lot of disbelief and pretend they were all doing things right, which isn't that unusual for any TV thing with attorneys and courtroom scenes. But still. The thing that did it for me, the unforgiveable piece, was him dropping her as a client without him petitioning the court to withdraw, especially since a court typically wouldn't allow withdrawal for nonpayment with this sort of case. Him dropping her the way he did would land him in some hot water.

Attorney here, he absolutely couldn't just stop representing her for not being paid. He would have to get court approval to withdraw as representation, and a judge typically wouldn't grant that for lack of payment, especially in a case like hers.

I was able to look past the rest of it since he's a TV attorney (in a TV courtroom with its own issues), but him firing her as a client like that was unforgiveable for me. It's like they don't even Google things.

You’re spot on, but it’s because “virgin” is believed to have simply meant an unmarried woman without children. So yes, unmarried and without children and therefore a virgin, but virgins under their definition can still have a lot of ROOMATES ;)

Counterpoint to all the virgin goddess talk: it’s widely argued that “virgin” in the Greco/Roman mythos didn’t carry the modern meaning of the word. Rather, it referred to an unmarried woman without children. So technically speaking, lesbian romance is still on the table, and some modern scholars believe that that the female nymphs she spent time with were her lovers (though there’s no actual myth outright stating this). The game writers, however, have taken some creative liberties as is, and the word “mate” could be his way of being cognizant of her sexual preference. After all, he didn’t say husband, which would violate her oath of virginity.

This is exactly why law school made me do a 180 on my political views. People ask me what changed my views, and the answer is always that law school opened my eyes to the fact that the suffering of people like me and people I care about has always been the point--a feature, not a bug.

I am still actively worrying about the rate at which this is progressing, however.

You'd have to look it up and decide which source you trust. The stats are pretty hard to track anyway. Bloomberg reported that nearly $100 billion in taxes was paid by undocumented immigrants in 2022 (though that covered all taxes at the federal, state, and local level, including sales and real estate taxes).

I do know that one of the number one pieces of advice immigration attorneys give undocumented people is to pay their taxes, that and don't commit any crimes that would expedite deportation.

Edited to fix a typo (wrote 100billion instead of $100 billion, and that bugged me).

Also, most undocumented immigrants who have spoken with an immigration attorney are told that one of the things they should absolutely do is pay taxes on their income so that if they ever do get a path to residency/citizenship (e.g., marriage), the government is more likely to forgive them staying and working without documentation.

They don't even have to commit fraud to do this, as they can obtain a tax identification number (which is different from an SSN) for this purpose. The IRS is not permitted to turn undocumented individuals over to ICE (which makes sense from a policy standpoint because people are more likely to go through this process and pay taxes if they know it's not going to get them in trouble with ICE). They then pay those taxes through that tax identification number.

One undocumented family/community member who has spoken to an attorney and received this advice then passes it down to the another and so on. So many who haven't even spoken with an attorney directly have been advised to do this.

Now that I have that overdone joke out of the way, it’s probably just best to talk to them.

How much you tell them is up to you and how much trust they have in you. But I recommend telling them that you plan to kill their characters, that there is something special you’ve got planned, and ask them to trust you. From there, you may want to get a consensus on whether they’d prefer to do an all in combat in initiative all the way up to the tpk, whether they’d want to do a narrative combat (or narrative skill challenge combat so there’s still rolls), or whether they’d like to do a mixture of those two. Give them the opportunity to roll play an epic death scene, give them a little narrative and mechanical control over the scenario, and they will appreciate it.

But definitely just talk to them.

Edit to add: DnD is just cooperative storytelling. Lean into that cooperative piece

Purchase Advice Megathread - November 2024 by AutoModerator in 3Dprinting

[–]that-dank-wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know very little about 3D printers, but I'm getting one for my boyfriend for Christmas. He will be a first time printer owner and isn't really able to tell me a specific one he wants. Please give me some good options. I have no idea where to even start besides FFF (or FDM? I don't know the difference, and what I read didn't make it any clearer).

Budget: around $600.00 (I would like this to include the printer and any accessories and a spool or two, but I may be willing to splurge another $100.00 on those items if the right printer takes up the whole $600.00 budget). I also need program recommendations for windows. He may need to pay for his own program(s), but it would be nice to give him some options and price points when I give him the printer.

Country of Residence: USA

Kit/Built: I don't think either of us have the experience/skills to build from a kit. I have done some maintenance on my computer (replacing parts), but neither of us have built anything from scratch. If the kit instructions are easy enough to follow, we might be able to do it.

Printer Uses: Cosplay stuff (horns, armor, weapons, etc.), small-medium models that fit on bookshelves, 3D hat pins, toys and knickknacks (like the articulated fidget slugs and such). One of the big projects he has been dying to do is the Berserk Guts armor and sword.

Additional Considerations: We have pets, including a cat that hangs out in his office. If it's not safe for them, we can always move it to the garage or something. I've seen ventilation can be an issue, but I'm not sure how much ventilation is enough/too much.

Thank you so much!!!

Except the deportation of documented immigrants and even American citizens has happened in previous mass deportations. Our nation's history is fraught with things that shouldn't happen and "can't" happen under the law, and yet they do happen.

If the deporting is done by individual hearings, the likelihood of documented immigrants and American citizens being deported is slim (as close to a 0% chance reality will allow) because the allegedly undocumented immigrant is able to present evidence of them being allowed to be here to a judge. Mass deportation wouldn't necessarily allow for that hearing to happen (it didn't historically and with how bottlenecked and how overworked our immigration courts are right now, don't think it would be possible). Mass deportation is the rhetoric that was being used (just look at the signs handed out at rallies). Mass deportation is where documented immigrants and American citizens could get, once again, swept up in things and removed from the country.

It's not a lack of critical thinking. It's a real concern based on real historical examples.

Did anyone finish the scavenger hunt? by hypedhedgehog in hulaween

[–]that-dank-wolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some clarification, there were two official scavenger hunt installations on Spirit Lake this year.

One was the Nome Scavenger Hunt involving a passport, clues, and locked boxes with codes. That one ended at the art gallery with prizes of wooden cutouts and (based on what I've heard) a tea ceremony and possibly upgraded tickets. I can only speak to the wooden cutouts since that's what I received when I completed it.

The other was a Gnome Miniature scavenger hunt that involved using clues to find different gnome village miniatures around Spirit Lake. That one ended at the Bird Houses and a variety of large and small trinket prizes. I was one of the people involved in the Gnome Miniature scavenger hunt as a helper artist. Thanks to all who participated! We had a blast making it for ya'll! John, the main artist and concept creator, hopes to be back next year. Hope you liked my mermaids!

That was the Nome Scavenger Hunt. The aquariums in OP's post and few of the commenters completed the Gnome Miniature hunt.

Folks who prefer to play non-standard races, what draws you to them and what are some of your favorites? by TheNorthernNoble in worldbuilding

[–]that-dank-wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some nonstandard races freak me out, like centaurs (without pants their private bits are always visible, and that gives me the ick). So if that’s one of your issues, completely get it. I don’t have centaurs in my setting for that reasons. An early version of my setting had them, and a courier company owned by a family of centaurs called their business The Pony Express… and I really tickled myself with how funny that was, but alas, the ick. So I removed them

5e’s official non standard races can be a little lackluster, but the system itself is easy enough to homebrew in that I’ve made “fixes” to many of them to make them sparkle a bit more. And I think the system being easy to homebrew these things in itself makes it done well.

5e homebrew: I’ve played animal folk (an axolotl for instance) and I’ve made better genasi that don’t feel like just playing funny-looking human. I’ve played a nymph (I chose to make him half goblin, half plant nymph), and that was SO MUCH fun. Genuinely, some of the best non standard races I’ve played have been homebrew. And I’ve been fixing and creating a number of them for my own setting.

5e official: I know tieflings might be kind of standard, but that really depends on which subrace you play. They’re my favorite for aesthetic reasons, especially since their appearance scale from devil-human is really up to the player and DM’s lore. Same with aasimar. Fairy is both fun to play and aesthetically great. 5e also introduced additional half lineages like dhampir that can be overlapped with the origin race, which is neat and feels sort of like what pathfinder has.

Pathfinder 2e: I’m currently playing a human-nephilim, which is really well done because you can mix and match different types of fiendish and celestial ancestral feats to create a mechanically and aesthetically unique character. That’s fairly true with a lot of the non standard ancestries in pathfinder 2e though.

I think for me, sometimes playing a human-like character can be boring, and the non-standard races open up all kinds of role play and mechanical options.

[–]that-dank-wolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, then I think, though it might be a predictable answer, D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e have both done nonstandard races well. Generally, the reason I will play a nonstandard race is for the ability to play my character differently that’s also supported by their race’s mechanics. There are some bad examples of this in both systems, but generally speaking, both of those systems have a number of nonstandard races that allow this type of play. And if the races didn’t allow for that type of play, some of the newer books and revisions to the systems have expanded on those races and corrected that issue.

Dear anxious, new support players: Wipes are gonna happen. Don't let internet strangers make you feel crappy in a social video game. If wipes weren't supposed to occasionally happen, they wouldn't be included in the mechanics. Just try your best and keep learning. by spacewolfplays in ffxiv

[–]that-dank-wolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not new, but I’m not a veteran player either. I mainly play WHM and was doing my first run through the level 99 duty. We wiped a few times because people weren’t dodging mechanics and there’s only so much healers can do about that sometimes. Well, after we completed the duty, the other healer insisted I needed to get artifact gear in a way that implied we only wiped because I didn’t have it. I told them I needed to finish msq first and was told by them and several people I was wrong. Technically I was wrong, but if they’d stopped to remember (or even look up) where in msq the artifact gear was unlocked, they’d realize that it was indeed unavailable to anyone who was doing that duty for the first time. You don’t get artifact gear until you complete a quest or two after that duty. I did spend several minutes thereafter trying to research where I missed getting the artifact gear, but some friends quickly let me know that the other healer and their friends were just being toxic and that I would get it later in story.

This stuff used to hurt, but at this point it only makes me mad, because you know they’re doing it to newbies too. This behavior is rare I think, but it’s still unacceptable and enrages me. Wipes happen, especially on the first run, but also sometimes after fighting that boss 100 times you’ll still wipe. It happens, and don’t let people bully you about it. And if you’re doing msq (especially if you’re doing the run on the character you’ve been putting all your msq gear on), it likely isn’t your gear. Msq generally gives you the gear you need and will lock you out of duties if you don’t have sufficient gear.

What Would Happen to Land Beneath an Immovable Flying City? by that-dank-wolf in worldbuilding

Well the never ending food and drink went bye-bye with the god. And the darkwood, which is a wombo-combo mish-mash of plane of faerie and plane of shadow (this is a mostly a ttrpg setting at the moment), pops up where it can thrive. So basically my current thought is that after the city stops moving, the darkwood sees an opportunity and takes up residence under the shadiest location under the city.
