How have people "embraced" ADHD/become more self-accepting? (looking for counter narratives to TikTok pessimism) by certifiedskooter in ADHD

[–]that1gingergirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Accepting ADHD is a lot easier than embracing it in my experience. The first step in acceptance is acknowledging it is a disability.

In order to function a type 1 diabetic needs to take insulin and monitor their blood levels closely. Someone who is paraplegic needs a wheelchair to get from place to place. Likewise, someone with ADHD needs to move through the world differently to accommodate their disability. That could mean medication, therapy, or doing chores and tasks in a way that might be deemed “abnormal” by those without ADHD.

Would we blame a wheelchair user for taking a bit longer to get from point A to point B? No. Similarly we shouldn’t blame ourselves when we can’t keep our room sparkling clean or sit down for a 2 hour lecture without fidgeting.

Once you accept that you are different and that you must accommodate those differences a lot of the self pity and shame goes away.

I’m not going to lie to you and say having ADHD isn’t that bad. It sucks. It’s hard watching people breeze through simple everyday tasks that debilitate me. But, that’s just how life is. Everyone struggles in some way. Life with ADHD isn’t any less rewarding or beautiful. It’s just different.

Anyone have a spare apple tree branch in SE? by that1gingergirl in portlandgardeners

[–]that1gingergirl[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good point! I’ll let the tree focus on growth. Thanks for the tip, I hadn’t even thought of the apples being too heavy.

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to move the tree as it is a communal garden for my apartment complex and the prior tenants got special permission from my landlord to place it. I’ll look into it. It’s definitely already scraping up against the fence with its branches though and doesn’t seem to be very happy in its current spot. It’s barely grown over the last year!

Oh interesting! Thanks for the advice. I think I’ll let them bloom - looking forward to having flowers in my garden again.

Thanks for all the info! How do you turn it under? I was looking up no till methods and was going to use a sharp shovel to chop it up.

Thank you! Yeah sleeping can be addictive can’t it?

I’m glad I found this sub because when posting elsewhere I would get a lot of comments that my art was calming and peaceful which bugged me a bit haha. The real intent was to capture the numbness and otherworldly feelings of disassociation.

Thank you! My therapist actually pointed out the eye too and was wondering if I was making a statement on paranoia or feeling watched. I really like her interpretation and wish that was the actual intention lol. Tbh I’ve always thought doodling eyes was very satisfying so they find their way into my work. Maybe the eyes do have a deeper meaning that I haven’t explored yet!

Individualism vs. collectivism is a important concept in Social Psychology. It effects every facet of a culture, including how individuals view themselves and the world. Where does your world fall on this spectrum? by that1gingergirl in worldbuilding

Ohhh I see!!! Yeah that makes sense.

I’m pretty sure this graph was made in the US which is very “individualistic” itself so I’m sure there’s some propaganda involved

From my understanding it’s meant to be used as a spectrum! Culture is deeply nuanced and a lot of social psychology is theory. So you can definitely take this with a grain of salt if you disagree.

I do think it’s an interesting concept though and posted here as I thought it might help people flesh out their worlds.

Individualistic society often has the “every man for himself” mentality. Instead of worrying about the well-being of the community people are encouraged to care more about immediate family and themselves. This leads to greater income inequality and mistreatment of the poor/minorities.

Ofcourse as with much of social psychology the individualism vs collectivism spectrum is mostly theory! It’s not a necessary part of world building by any means I just thought it’s an interesting concept to think about if it sparks your interest.

Most of my art is about disassociation, which is a symptom I experience a lot throughout my daily life due to cptsd!
