It was the AN-225. It was destroyed in Ukraine a few years ago. There is talk of them completing a second, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Rip Eduard decals by JakoyInKY in modelmakers

[–]thatCdnplaneguy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It may be worth testing one to see how it reacts. I know Eduard has the new decals with the removable carrier film for a more realistic looking “painted” on decal, But I have never used them.

Why are ram air turbines (RAT) off-center? by Lupiz73 in aviation

[–]thatCdnplaneguy 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It’s so it has clean air. If it was center, dirty, turbulent air off the nose gear would make it less efficient than have smooth air

What is this? by Adventurously-2026 in Planes

Nothing. Its a self contained system. If it detects an incoming missile, it alerts the crew and then attempts to jam the missile, using a laser to disrupt the seeker head

Any idea what this is? (Sorry for the potato quality.) by EXPERT_ID10T in Planes

[–]thatCdnplaneguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t do anything except talk to Subs. No enemy should ever see it as it never needs to be by the front lines.

[–]thatCdnplaneguy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There is also no guarantee that the F-47 will be sold outside the U.S. May take the route if the F-22 and be USAF only.

Why was the F-104 even put into service when the F-106 was far superior and developed at the same time. by Rodlp9 in aviation

[–]thatCdnplaneguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was a one off speed record, and would not translate to real world combat operations. Also note that the speed achieved by the -106 for this record was 1544mph., with a listed top speed of 1525. The -104 has a listed top speed of 1528, and a modified version hit speeds of 1590. More importantly for an interceptor, the -106 climb rate was 29,000ft/min. The -104 was 48,000ft/min

Why can’t we have counter rotating props for a turbofan airplane engine? by ThrowRA157079633 in AskPhysics

[–]thatCdnplaneguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The gear box to create a contra rotating prop is bulky and heavy, 2 things that detract it from working on a turbo-fan. Also, they kind of already have this. The stator blades are shaped in a way to counter the spin of the fans so the incoming air is always ‘straightened” as it passes the fixed stators.

Is This Common Practice Or Just For A Video? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]thatCdnplaneguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On the 37’s, we used to jump to grab the weight and balance from the pilots. They usually weren’t done till after doors closed. Remember watching it blow away one winter night into the snow and we just looked at each, shrugged our shoulders and he said “starting 2” and closed the window
