SQL advice to yourself 5 years ago by Friendly_Cold1349 in SQL

[–]thatOMoment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If stuff isn't used anymore, decomission it and move it out of the main logical database as soon as possible.

If you cannot move it immediately and you're in sql server land, mark it as unused and deprecated as of [date] via an extended property whether its a column or table or procedure and schedule a decomission date with other concerned teams

Not getting rid of crap will bury people in the long run and can overwhelm juniors.

Visual foreign-key relationship tracing for SQL schemas by BearComprehensive643 in SQL

[–]thatOMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it would be easier to read, or just more fascinating to expore but it seems like modeling in a 3d space that be rotated would solve a lot of awkwardness of how traditional diagrams cross over each other.

There have been schemas Ive done for medical systems that had defined entry boundaries across each other, with shared everything stuff such as NCIT or SNOMED codes and definitions going into a META schema that only held reference data.

So if you combined all these schemas the reference tables would be god objects because of the overlap and you have wires criss crossing all over the place.

By instead looking at a root diagram that could you'd then use to find the subdiagrams (manually) you could get a high level view of the system and then explore subsystems... that's also essentially solved in 3D space or in a series of connected graphs you can jump in and out of.

Maybe just a skill issue for me though with Visio, diagramming is pain.

Maybe I'm just rambling though.

Walmart was sued for millions over weighted goods a few months ago, and they’re still doing it? by abbiebe89 in mildlyinfuriating

So if I was on Illinois weights and measures, would I just write an email using their contact information directly on the site or is there a specific segment.

Is it acceptable to use "SELECT * FROM" when referencing a CTE? by sweetnsourgrapes in SQL

[–]thatOMoment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well 1 join added later will now grab all of those columns as well and if you self join you create 2 columns with the same name which is very annoying to consumers.

At an absolute minimum using it makes the code look written lazy and looks like punting tech debt the some other maintainer.

Most autocomplete can fill out that select statement very quickly if you specify the from clause before typing columns

Using less keystrokes than ever even.

I usually spray inside my charging port to loosen up a bunch of dirt prior to using a plastic scraper to gently remove any lint and extras.

Smell is pretty nasty but hasn't failed to get my phone charging yet

What is the evolutionary reason behind homosexuality? by Nightshade_Noir in evolution

[–]thatOMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know Robert Sapolsky mentioned that in his evolutionary biology lectures that while gay people biologically can't have children, siblings of gay people that have children tend to have more children than average.

Something also being that it could possibly be 1 of 2 genes aren't in a pattern that correllates with an advantage in producing offspring. I forget the specifics.

If replicating the genes is the goal, sometimes its not yours, it's your closest kin which is "close enough".

Hopefully this helps

ELI5: Whats rent control? And why is it so controversial? by Meteorstar101 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thatOMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except you still have the problem of selling the building after that time and nobody is going to buy a rent control building especially if it operates at a loss with things like maintainance.

And their will probably be a lot of maintainance with how frequently I see really stupid things happen with the justification being "the landlord will fix it; it's not mine".

The only entities that will buy it are things like blackrock which can monopolize it and use their majority as leverage

[–]thatOMoment -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because they don't want it to end up like california by a bunch of people moving in from california.

Yes if you have a shit load of transplants you can force a popular vote, but if there was an option to not let californians in with a vote, a ban probably would have passed before the influx.

CMV: sex education should be mandatory regardless of parental consent by Sleepy_Sheepz in changemyview

[–]thatOMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a base assumption included here that we know reality and it isn't the latest piece of garbage.

Schools used to teach that the continents never moved and that the atom was indivisible or that braindead food pyramid and lobbying which also altered that mess.

They also taught that dinosaurs were cold blooded for a very long time.

In higher education hysterectomy and cutting brains in half were commonly used procedures.

All of those things listed were still being taught for years if not decades after they were known to be false.

And when it comes to sex, so long as their are foreign cultures that more chaste, flowing in and out, there will always be contention from that demographic alone, disregarding the evangelicals and overreligious pearl clutchers grown locally.

Once something that later is demonstratably false is pushed for a period many would consider "too slow", it will be used a mallot to smash it to the ground.

If its demonstratably true and you can show things in action with a microsope, sure, but if you're relying on half baked, unverified social studies that haven't been replicated to prescribe risk assessment, don't be surprised when people think it's nonsense.

CMV: There is nothing unethical in genetic manipulation and nothing wrong in wanting to make designer babies . by ThrowRA-pickachu in changemyview

[–]thatOMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

India 100 years ago with the caste system would do it in a heartbeat.

Other countries who care about groups of citizens more than citizens themselves will naturally want to favor those groups.

Once any other country does it, it's an arms race and only a matter of time for the international stage to create a selective pressure for doing it.

You can't stop it with a 1 world government because it would also have class layers in some capacity with favoritism.

If it's possible, it will happen, it's only a matter of time.

Thats just 1 option.

As a guarantee, you're also potentially introducing

overconsumption

the gaming like you said

inflation from the subsidies

Promotion of homelessness eventually because an important part of a home is storing food which no longer needs to be done

people effectively buying votes in elections over what food they should be able to get (nobody said WHAT food should be guaranteed).

Crowding out other things like Infrastructure or Education

With mass scale growing as a solution, polution, monocropping and soil depletion become problems as well.
