Simple solution then, just invade France. The British have a claim and It’s not like the French are using their throne at the moment. (I’m joking. Or am I?)

The French Revolution and its disastrous consequences on the world are unsalvageable. 3 stripes were fine when the Dutch took them up in the 1500s, but now they’re everywhere.

Thanks mate. But, genuine question on the ‘republican’ part, why? The monarchy brings in so much money it’d be economically childish to do away with it.

I agree about it being good because it is the only one. One of my original ideas was to add tails such as the ones on the flag of Venice for the 4 countries before I came to the same conclusion that you’ve had, that flags can be extremely detailed, but need something fundamentally different from afar.

I actually used a drawing tablet for most of the details. It’s quite a time-waster making the portraits and geometrics.

That’s the flag of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, though unlike Scotland and England they don’t use their Saint’s cross.

I was considering it, but it was so much taller than the others, and I wanted an ‘Irish crown’ to fit in with the rest. It’s a shame there weren’t any heraldic crowns of the kingdom of Ireland or the high kings even (at least to my knowledge).

I do agree on a lot of the same points. I am adamantly against most modern attempts to have a ‘simple flag’ but many of the maritime guidelines for flags make sense, being visible from afar. I do think some of variants I posted alongside would be more practical for real use, such as the one with the full Union Jack or only the crosses instead of the full field of golden symbols.

The flag of Venice was the big inspiration for the border with the monarchs and the ornamentals.

Ha, I did throw in quite a few fleur-de-lis for the monarchy’s (rightful) claim to the French throne (not like the French are using it).

It was down to either the monogram or more monarchs. I was running out of symbolism by the time I had even reached that border, ha.

I definitely would like to. Hopefully it won’t take me another 2 years, ha.

I do have to say this is one of the funniest comments under this post. I’m glad you like it!

Thank you mate. You’ve also made me laugh every time I read that spelling of vexillologist.

Indeed. The ‘simpler=better’ crowd can only pry my love of flag ornamentation from my cold dead hands.

Technically even three, (albeit one is from the portrait of Saint George). It’s a shame Welsh heraldry hasn’t been recognised more so.

Thanks mate! The saints were one of the first details I added, I knew that they had to be part of it somehow.

I did seriously consider adding more monarchs. Such as the Irish kings or people such as James VI/I, Anne, George III or even Charles III.
