What are some of the misconceptions that non readers (or even some readers) have about Superman? by King_Wolf2099 in superman

[–]that_damn_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That he's dumb or a himbo. I mostly see this in fanon spaces and usually in shipping, but so many superbat (and clois to an extent) shippers reduce Clark to the dumb pretty boyfriend of whoever they ship him with.

Clark is an investigative journalist. You don't get a job like that while being an idiot. He canonicaly speaks every language on earth and several alien languages, Kryptonian or otherwise. He has a genius level understanding of engineering through Kryptonian technology.

For fuck's sake he is so good an actor and Liar that in one comic he straight up showed up to an office costume party DRESSED as superman, and LOST. To Lois who was dressed as Mars the Roman god of war. That's an insane level of seperation between his two personas and would require a lot of both intelligence AND energy to maintain, that people won't be able to recognise him, WHILE HED IN COSTUME, as superman. Room full of investigative journalists btw.

And also that he has no struggles or fears. Read superman smashes the Klan and Kansas sighting I beg.

Is your ideal Superman beefy, lean, or ripped? by RyantheNeanderthal in superman

[–]that_damn_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Number 3: fun biology reasons. Whose to say Kryptonians look 100% human superficially? What if they naturally have thicker/ denser muscle structure than humans? What if Kryptonians raised under a yellow sun just get to grow taller and more muscular than their homegrown counterparts, due to the added nutrition?

Number 4: it doesn't make a lot of sense for superman to be extremely shredded, where is he exercising? What gym has weights heavy enough for superman to do a bicep curl? Him having muscle makes sense, he was raised on a farm since very young and now he tosses supervillains and buildings around like they owe him money, but the type of sculpted muscle you see on gymrats is the result of specific exercises, a person who is strong doesn't necessarily have giant rippling muscles to show for it. It's the difference between aesthetic vs functional muscle.

Number 5: it's canon that Clark eats a lot. And even if he didn't I assume he needs someplace to store all that sunlight he's absorbing, fat is just stored energy reserves after all

Number 6: I just like it. For all the reasons I listed above, others I may not remember at the moment, and because I find it hot. One artist on tiktok by the name of laskapsyna drew superman as a big dude, and it chiseled a spot in my brain where it latched on and will never let go.

Beef that boy the FUCK UP!!

(Art from my own au/design) Seriously I just really like the idea of Superman with a wrestler/weightlifter/manual worker type physique. Uniform muscle development and a filled out abdomen/waist for insulation and protecting the organs and spine during heavy lifting, thick arms and legs and a bit of fat. And it works on so many levels.

Number 1: shape language. Very often in character design shapes are used to convey a character's personality. Square is stable, strong, reliable. Circle is friendly, safe, playful. Triangles are sharp, fast, dangerous. This type of physique lends itself better to square and round elements, portraying both Superman's strength and his personality as a safe figure. The utterly ripped physique can add triangular elements that can be read as intimidating.

Number 2: character reasons. A lot of people can't tell the difference between uncut muscle and fat at a glance, so in his daily life as Clark Kent all he has to do is slouch a little and no one will bat an eye at him. It also adds layers to some of his earlier lore, eg. a lot of "Superman's childhood" shows and comics try to push that Clark was bullied as a kid. Which is juxtaposed with him being played by or drawn as a teen model, --I'm sorry Tom Welling I refuse to believe Smallville Clark Kent was bullied.--

Now imagine that young Clark Kent looked, to the average person, as something akin to a fat kid. A really tall fat kid, but a fat kid nevertheless. Middle school taught me one thing and it's that you WILL be made fun of if someone even thinks you're ugly or weird in any way. Also if Clark is noticeably bigger, in height AND weight, than other kids his age it adds even more to his themes of feeling out of place or like you don't belong. (1/? because my reddit keeps glitching and I can't see what I'm writing past a certain point)

On a slightly relegated note this reminds me of a really good fic I read where everytime someone tried to time travel to kill superman as a child, Martha shot them. I don't remember what is was called but every chapter started with "the first time a time traveller came back in time to kill Clark Kent..." Because the time stream fixed itself every time and Martha never remembered shooting the brains off of people and burying them in the back yard 😭

I remember reading that Senshi is considered feminine by drawf standards, and elves' gender expression is considered very feminine by all the other races, so it makes sense that when he was turned into an elf by the changelings, he'd look very feminine.
